Is this a thing now?

OUT: Tom Hickey (managed)

I assume this means dropped or omitted? It sounds like he is undergoing some kind of prolonged medical treatment or has some sort of behavioural problem ;)

I think they work out how many games in a row someone like Hickey plays before he needs a rest so he can be fresh if we make the finals , maybe . Remember hickey also played a few preseason games . Also they might take in to consideration who we are playing . The thinking maybe Longer can handle who ever the Geelong ruckman is. It also gives Longer practice in case Hickey gets injured . Perhaps.

Longer wasn't exceptional playing for Sandringham, so he did not demand a spot over Hickey.
There are so many small issues that players carry and play with - fingers, toes, corkies, ribs, maybe they have decided to "manage" him so that he regains full fitness.

I'm sure we will hear more in time.

It makes sense that if we have two decent ruck men we may as well use them to keep both fresh.
Yep - Longer plays this week and Holmes plays next week and then Hickey comes back for another 3 week stint.

Just on Holmes - whats the chances that the club said to him last year - look your tap work is fantastic but around the ground your just haven't improved enough to show you are going to make it.

We've got sheetloads of salary cap space and need to spend some money and you are handy as a 3/4th backup ruck - so we will put you the main list, pay you good coin for the next year and then that's it - you're on your own!!!

So Holmes gets cut at the end of the year but goes with a very nice bonus (rather than just the years of rookie payments) - thanks for trying so hard mate!!!

That makes sense.

Hickey (201cm 98kg) has gone head-to-head in the first four weeks with Max Gawn (208cm 112kg), Nathan Vardy (200cm 100kg) and Jon Giles (201cm 101kg), Stef Martin (199cm 102kg), and Brodie Grundy (203cm 102kg).

So, he's given away;

Rnd 1: 7cm/14kg
Rnd 2: -1cm/2kg and 0cm/3kg
Rnd 3: -2cm/4kg
Rnd 4: 2cm/4kg

Or averaging it out: he's given away 1.2cm and 5.4kg every week.

Round 1: Gawn is a monster and Hickey was soundly beaten.

Round 2: Vardy and Giles are third rate and Hickster had a solid win.

Round 3: Martin is shorter, but physically strong and very athletic. He won, but Tom tried mightily.

Round 4: Grundy is bigger AND more athletic than most, not just Hickey. He's a matchup nightmare and it's no surprise he won on the night.

Tom's had a very tough first four weeks in what is arguably the most physically demanding position in the game. Plus IMO he's been playing with some sort of niggle since Round 1, where Gawn physically battered him.

I'm not surprised he needs a rest, and Billy is a very capable replacement.

He isn't named in the VFL. I am assuming the managed bit is true, but is also a case of his ineffectiveness recently. Had it been purely a case of management, he would have rucked 60% rather than 70-75%

I suspect that if Billy has a stinker this week Tom will be back next week, but if Billy is decent or better, he'll keep the job for at least another week, as they probably want him in there for Mumford/Lobb in 3 weeks time- as that will be the big test to see if he's better able to compete with someone like that that Tom has been struggling badly against so far this year.

If he's still in then and he's more competitive against them than we reckon Tom would have been, it will probably be his spot to lose from that point on.

Unless they allow going 3rd-up again after the review after round 6, as that is the thing that has really made it hard for Tom this year. We could cover his big weakness (not being strong enough in the wrestles) by going 3rd-up last year, but this year it's been exposed.

If going 3rd-up continues to be banned, Tom is probably going to have to start having the type of games he had against Sydney in the JLT (29 disposals 10 clearances, or whatever) a lot more often, if he wants to regain and keep his spot.
