Delisted Tom Lee

Have been a bit slack of late but here are the reviews of Lee's past few games.

Round 10

Tommy probably had a quieter day. He was playing on bigger opponents which made it difficult but his head never dropped and we were pleased with the way he continued to give great effort. His ball use was pretty good.

Round 11

Tommy didn’t have his best day but he’s been good for us all year so we’re confident he will bounce back. He learnt a great deal from Sunday’s game.

Round 12

Tom’s defensive work was good and he held his direct opponent well. His foot skills are excellent and he is continuing to work on his decision making, especially from kick-ins.

Round 13

Tom unfortunately got a poke to the eye early and only played just over a half of footy. Before then he was solid in defence and even had a shot at goal when he pushed forward.

The last 4 weeks have seen Lee's form dip slightly and eventually sustaining an eye injury. Looks to be improving his defensive work every week though and being used to kick the ball out of defence with his kicking ability.

This sums up how I felt after snaffling Tom Lee @ pick #35 in the advocate draft. Pay particular attention at the 1.30 and 3.16 minute marks. Also a special mention of Ronald Dale at 3.04. Video from Apr 2014.

During the CEO & COACH Q&A session on Twitter, Richo indicated that Tommy is firmly in his plans for the backline in 2016. Later on to a specific question about Tommy, Richo had this to say.

Certainly not a monty to get picked in the backline but I'd be surprised if Richo hasn't laid this challenge at Tommy's feet. There's an opportunity there, let's see if he's good enough to take it.

In the wake of Jake Carlisle’s season-long ban, St Kilda coach Alan Richardson is confident the Saints have sufficient depth in their defensive key posts to cover his absence this year.

...

Richardson also identified Luke Delaney and Tom Lee as bona-fide candidates down back, with former North Melbourne key defender Delaney overcoming the hip concerns that derailed the second half of his 2015 campaign.

...

Lee failed to play a senior game in 2015 as Josh Bruce grasped his spot inside the Saints forward 50 and Paddy McCartin was given a taste at different times. The West Australian was thrown down back for Sandringham in the second half of the year where he put his hand up for a game at senior level.

Knee bandage looks less.
Good to see he's up and about again and hopefully gets a run at it this year.

Posted this in the intraclub match thread but though it was worth repeating here in Tom's thread.

I was only able to be there for the first two and a half quarters ... left during the drinks break in the third.

Tom Lee played the Sam Fisher loose man in defence for the yellow team (I read that he swapped to the red team later). Looked good and moved well IMO.

Crashed heavily and came up lame at one point but waved off the trainers, stayed on the ground and 'ran it off'.

Spend some time on the stationary bicycle outside the dressing room at half-time.

In the 3rd he paid some close attention to Paddy in the goal square. Giving him a few jabs in the small of the back. Paddy shook him off and threw elbow back to break the contact. Interesting to see in an intraclub match. Paddy will cop much worse when the real game starts and Tom showed a bit of mongrel he'll need if he's going to make it on the backline.

I don't reckon he's first choice for the defence but if Dempster or Fish cop an injury or Goddard needs a spell in the VFL he will get his chance and if he can stay fit, who knows.

Tommy's attracting some positive comments after NAB1 against NM both on BF and by Danny Sexton. On yesterday's showing he is ahead of Luke Delaney and probably ahead of Nick Coughlin in defence plus he has the ability to be thrown forward when required. Injury-free he has a chance to prove himself this year. Not sure that going forward he will be best 22 but as a versatile backup he could have a place when we are in contention again.

Sexton:

"Not wanting to risk Paddy after the first 10 minutes of the game was disappointing, but what we saw in the second quarter was Tom Lee – who hadn’t really played forward for the last year of his career – went forward and took a couple of marks inside 50 and had two shots."

"For him to go there at late notice was a positive that we think we can take out of it."

Defence coach Rohan Welsh on Tom Lee

"Tommy’s had a really positive pre-season after having the ankle operations. His main focus over the pre-season was to get some more body strength and he’s done that."

"We feel Tommy can be a really important part of our footy club in terms of being able to swing him from forward to back at times. To have someone that is versatile that can go forward to back or back to forward is really pleasing."

Overall a very positive report on Tom's pre-season. Welsh also suggests he's put on 4 - 5 kilos over summer.

Fingers crossed for an injury-free run for the young lad.

Sounds like Tom (& Hugh) did well for Sandy in their practice match against Frankston on the weekend so I guess they are both in the mix for R1. The best players listed in order (if that has any bearing) were: Lee, Goddard, Longer, Curren, Templeton

A 72-point lead put the result beyond doubt at the final break.

St Kilda listed key defenders Tom Lee and Hugh Goddard were impressive down back and made it very difficult for the Dolphins to score inside 50.

Tommy continues to play well for Sandy. Named second-best for them today behind Acres. Another window opens this week with Robbo almost certainly out and Paddy doubtful. Perhaps Membrey, who was emergency today, would come in if Paddy can't play but surely Tom is a big chance to come in for Robbo. I'd like to see him play defence at AFL level even if it is against the reigning Premiers.

So Tom has finally been picked to play at AFL level again. With the Carlisle off-season drama I thought he might have got his chance earlier. He was close, an emergency during the first three weeks without making it into the team. This week he gets his chance in Tassie against Hawthorn. Hope the weather down there is kind to the Western Australian lad. We'll all be watching. Is Tom Lee a defender?

Good to see Tom Lee get a game.

Saw him and Blakers fueling up on Nando's at Southland the other day in preparation.

All the best for the game Tommy, may you play a blinder!

Good game by Tom Lee.:thumbsu:
Obviously the Nando's were still in his system for the 1st quarter but after that he settled into the game and played well.
He can make the grade IMO and will look good with Carlisle and Goddard as the 3rd tall def.

I've watched the replay paying particular attention to Tom.

Q1
Clean spoil on O'Brien on the wing
Unnecessary free to O’Brien – in the back in marking contest on wing
Horrendous kick on def 50 – turnover – goal
Quick handball receive and give over the top
Kick from goal square to Armo about 45 out on boundary
Pressured kick from congested goal square – OOB on the full

Perhaps a touch of rose-coloured glasses but it wasn't as bad a first quarter s I remember. Sure the turnover was extremely bad but he wasn't the only player to give the ball straight back.

Q2
Intercept mark on the wing, kick into corridor to Roo
Gathered the ball above his head from smothered Haw kick, tackled immediately and quick handball on his knees to Jack Steven
Received short handball from Steven, fumbled handball under pressure
Picked up ball, broke a tackle, 45m kick to the forward pocket
Uncontested mark, 30m kick along the line fell short of Weller who was still able to gather the ball
Handball receive in the centre, long kick bounced OOB

Much better, no absolute clangers but disposal could have been better

Q3
Uncontested mark from Joey, long kick from defence to corridor
Little dance (stretch) after ball OOB :)
Handball to keep it in play … received a free kick, advantage StK
Mark in the backline, long kick down the line
Uncontested mark … tried to move it on quickly … smothered OOB
Mark from Joey 45 out from def goal … long kick Fisher on boundary, mark not paid
Handball receive in traffic, short kick to Sav on def 50
Uncontested mark in def 50 from switch … handball over the top to Geary
Big shepherd to allow Newnes to run through centre and kick to Geary

Much better quarter. Some creative kicks out of defence. One mistake when tried to move the ball on too quickly.

Q4
Handball receive from Roo, kick smothered by Mitchell
Spoil in the pack
Long kick forward
Mark on the wing, wheel and play on, 60m kick for THAT MARK

Much quieter quarter but then I didn't notice is opponent doing too much. Seemed to be in and around the play, sometimes locking the ball in without getting a clear disposal.

Overall I think he did well after a shaky start. Good reintroduction as a defender at AFL level against the best team of the last 3 years. Tom's best play of the day was the intercept mark on the wing followed by the quick 60m kick for Paddy's mark.
