Exciting to land Peter Frampton, Napoleon Dynamite Tom Lee. If he brings Pamela into the frame, ayyyy!

Whatever your opinion about Pelchen and his leuitenants, he/they don't die wondering that's for sure. Did not see this one coming at all. After reading and watching a bit about Lee today, I really like what I see. It's certainly riskier than last year's Saad/Milera deal as we are giving up a bit but I trust our recruiters and have faith that Lee will be ready to go round 1 next year which is great for us.

Exciting times.

Someone else mentioned that he might have been injured in the WAFL GF but he performed consistently well over the whole season which is more important than one game.

I'm not sure if he's big enough at this stage to be a genuine KPF at AFL level but he looks like he will be a handy third forward at least. Under Watters we have started to develop a bigger spread of goal kickers rather than just rely on a couple of key forwards and Milne to kick most of our goals like we did under Lyon.
Copped two injuries early in the GF but remained on the ground for the whole match (mostly limping not too far from the goalsquare) so East Freo didn't have an extra bigman assendancy. The bloke can play. There's been a fair amount of disappointment on the Freo forum today. He did pre-season with us after Adelaide dropped him but, for some reason, they didn't rookie-list him. Many were surprised then and were hoping our mob could rectify it this year. I think the Simon McPhee connection at Claremont may have been a big factor in you guys getting him. Think McPhee may have coached him at colts level before becoming League coach.

Hope it works out for him this time after we delisted him a few years back.

Pretty stupid to draft this sort of player at a young age and expect them to be performing after one year.
Saints have two on their list from last year, havent shown much yet , but someone once said "TALLS TAKE A LONG TIME TO DEVELOP".
No matter how often its said, people seem to not believe it or something.
If you arent willing to invest the time dont draft them.

He's gone from 17yo/191cm/86 kg to a 21yo/194cm/94kg. His time at Adelaide would be a very distant memory, but thanks for another reminder (one of quite a few from Adelaide supporters).

He admitted he wasn't ready (mentally), so I don't think keeping him in the system for another year was going to help.

His marking reminds me of Farren Ray - marking at a real high point. It'll be interesting to see how he goes at the AFL level.

There was also a trade that happened this afternoon, which saw the Saints depart with their current first pick, pick 12 to the GWS Giants.

The Saints set pick 12 to Giants and in return picked up Tom Lee as a pre-listed player, and also secured pick 24 and 43, a dead set solid move by the Sainters.

As an avid fan of all the state leagues, when I heard Tommy Lee's name pop up this afternoon, I was ecstatic for the saints. Tommy originally was on the books for the Crows, however was delisted after a season. Since then Lee has been plugging away at his football, and has had some huge showings in the WAFL.

Here is my wrap of the young lad, who is now 21.

TOM LEE:
The people of Western Australia love this bloke. At 195cms and 94kgs, he is ready made to step into the St Kilda forward line immediately. He kicked 60 goals this season for WAFL side Claremont and was a key part of Claremont’s premiership.

Lee is a hard leading, agile forward, who is strong both overhead and below his knees. He’s a dead-eye-dick in front of the sticks, and has a beautiful and sound technique that almost never fails him.

Tommy Lee is known for kicking bags, he’s very hard to mark up on, and is a very smart forward who can turn a defender inside out at ground level, create space and lead multiple times, and he also doesn’t mind the odd goal on the run or in heavy traffic. Put simply, he’s a ripper!

It’s great list management by the Saints, who are preparing for the post “Rooey and Kosi” era, both in which will be turning 30 next year. Saints fans should be very excited about their future.

To put this trade into perspective, the Saints really come out on top. Effectively in hindsight the Saints have secured Tom Lee, Pick 13 (compo pick for losing Goddard), Pick 24 and Pick 43 for Brendan Goddard; a massive win there.

The saints are still a very good chance also to secure Tom Hickey, assuming they trade on pick 24 to the suns, which more than likely will happen in the coming days.

A big tick to to the St Kilda footy club.

...for Brendan Goddard and Pick 12 dude!

Staley's rookie spot would be shaky with the pickup of Lee?

Wonder whether it also rules a line through Khan (even if he slips in the draft). Would be a shame, as Khan is a big mobile unit who can kick (and just about to turn 22).

Watters was adamant about playing 3 talls up forward all year even tho one of them shouldn't have been in the side. This pick up addresses that problem which should put Kosi on the outer which is a big plus.

How many times this year would Kosi be in the right spot to crash a pack only to drop a simple mark. I see no reason why Lee couldn't hang on to a few from seeing his highlights and with Wilkes' improvement this year and probable improvement again next year our forward line is looking more elite then ever.

i was initially upset that we parted with our first pick in the draft so quickly, but upon hearing reviews and watching footage of lee it isn't as bad as first thought. admittedly I don't know anything about him, so obviously going to trust the clubs instinct into picking him up.. stats don't lie, and 195cm agile and mobile key forwards - who can mark and kick, don't exactly grow on trees..

if we can land hickey and brown then that is a massive A+ for trade week. caddy would obviously be an even bigger bonus... albeit pretty unlikely.

come on sainters!

Hi guys, whilst I think Lee deserved his shot at AFL level, I think you've paid overs for him.

Not sure how you could calculate that.

It seems people seem to think pick 12 brings a gun, and disregard any ability to draft a good player with pick 24 (and 43).

Lee was rated a near certainty to be drafted, and 6 clubs spoke with him.

What have we actually paid? Some believe that after the top 5 (or 10) the depth of talent is relatively even up to pick 30. Who knows at this stage?

I'm not sure we're looking for too much more "input" from Adelaide supporters on this topic.

I really like this trade & think it comes down to where they rated Lee as a KPF in the draft. It's reasonably accepted to be a thin draft for tall forwards with only Mason Shaw, Kristian Jaksch & Lee rated in the top 25 (With Daniher gone/Stringer is 191 & will most likely go top 10). Some have rated Lee as a later chance to be drafted but that has probably more to do with the infatuation that people have with 18 year old untried talent and a dislike for a kid that was delisted 3 years ago.

St Kilda were obviously keen to get one of the handful of KPFs with either #12 or #13 so I suppose they've done very well in locking one in prior to the draft & getting two extra picks as well.

The bonus is that Lee can play straight away, learn from Roo in game situations & that will undoubtedly fast track his development to a bonafide AFL player. At 21 Lee still has some filling out to do & being in an AFL program will see him be a big strong unit capable of leading the forward line in 2-3 years time (when Roo has retired to the Texas Ranch).

About par, he was prelisted so that drops his draft value a little, and he may have been there at 24 however we got 24 as part of the trade so all things considered Lee probably wouldn't have lasted as this is supposedly midfield strong whilst the talls tail off quickly, if it's overs it's only slight and you can get away with that.

Tom struggled in Adelaide on smaller grounds where his ability to find space was taken away from him, his ability to run and use his leap mitigated by smaller surrounds.

If he wasn't taller, stronger, more dedicated, and better performed than 3 years ago I might take more note. It's irrelevant.

does anyone know what his endurance was like in the combine testing?

Rendell said he "tested well", although from the 2008 pre-season:
"I did a [bike] session just then, which was apparently a ‘light’ one," he said with a laugh. "It was pretty tough, so there is a big summer ahead for sure."

Comments just before being picked up by the Saints:
''Back then I thought I was fit and I thought I was working hard, but I wasn't doing anywhere near enough. I thought: 'OK, I'll do the bare minimum and be just as good as these other guys', when they were in there on their days off doing extra stuff to get even better. I didn't have the right attitude, which I hate to say, but it's the truth, and now that I've grown up a bit I have a much better work ethic and that's helped me get much fitter. Over time you realise that when it's late in the last quarter, you want to be the one still running and hitting your targets.''

And some interesting comments from Rendell in May this year:

http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/archive/13716403/tiger-wants-crack-afl/

Former Adelaide recruiter Matt Rendell recently pointed to Tom Lee as a prime example of the mistakes made by AFL clubs who drafted players too young and then spat them out prematurely.

Rendell said Lee was a player who would only start to live up to his promise in his third year.

Lee is now in his third season at Claremont and Rendell's prediction could not be any more prescient.

I was reading on the D&T board about Lee apparently not being strong enough to be a first tall, and that he'd need a strong body in the F50 to help him out. Hopefully we look to getting a monster FF to 'protect' Lee and Stanley in the future, like Gehrig did with Roo.

Wilkes? If he could gets bit of the g-train mongrel in him it would be pretty good.
