Is it really the same as pick 12 (when you get 24 and 43 in return)?

That would be like saying we used pick 20 on Saad & Milera - when we got Ross as well.

I'd have thought that they are re-building the list for future years, rather than only being focused on improving the 2013 best 22.

I'd say that out of 90 or so new players this year , 60-70 will be reserves players, not to say they wont get a run in the AFL.

Lee is long term. As I said before, you play him too early, and it'll feel like he gets in based on nothing. He HAS to EARN the spot, he has to think it's hard to get. If it's easy to get, it's easy to keep - just go out there and muck around, don't train. If we play him from the get-go, we are setting him up to fail like he did at Adelaide.

Riewoldt, Stanley, Wilkes is a good combo. Kosi is depth for if one of those go down (and poor depth at that). Lee has to wait his turn. Personally, I hope Lee doesn't play a game all year. That'll mean that Roo, Knife and Beau are doing a terrific job up forward kicking goals, and he has to wait until either Roo or Wilkes retires, some time in 2014 or 15.

I hope he plays, I hope his year is like Saad's, doing well in the reserves for the first 5-8 weeks until getting a call up.

Well, that'd be a nice other option... :)

Main thing for me is that I think Wilkes, Stanley and Riewoldt HAVE to be given a sold chance. Wilkes and Stanley deserve that.

Agree with that. We need to find out now what Wilkes is going to produce with a bunch of CONSECUTIVE games and with a bit of faith shown in him. If he doesn't perform to at least the level he did this year (when he was stuffed around a heap- getting subbed off a lot, dropped on a whim, and was only playing every couple of weeks, early in the season (due to all the byes in the VFL and also being "emergency" for us, from memory and not playing for Sandy). To have to deal with all that, as well as a new team and gameplan and city, it was a good effort for him to have performed as well as he did (which wasn't consistently good, but perfectly good in patches and very good in some others).

I reckon now is the time to see what he's got (form and fitness and so on, permitting). We've got years to see what Lee can do, but if he starts off the year on fire, I could live with all of Wilkes, Roo, Stanley and Lee in the same team, just like when we had Gehrig, Kosi, Roo and Hamill, when we were so good in 2004/2005.

Add to that, Wilkes had ABSOLUTELY NO pre-season last year. He clearly started the year having spent a bit too long in the green paddock. He'll be much fitter in 2013.

I'd like to see him in top nick and top form. :thumbsu:

With him, I just get the feeling it's a confidence thing. I reckon all it would take would be one really good, break-out game (even better than the one he had this year when he kicked 5 and got the 3 Brownlow votes) and he could start to realise how good he can be and that he belongs at the level and from there he could have a few very good years. It would probably be getting to the stage where it's "now or never" though.

Is there any chance that Stanley may be used as a ruckman? I would love to see his speed around the congestion. His athleticism could add a whole new aspect to stoppages.

Pretty sure no one, really took him seriously.....the story of his life so far

It's time to become a focal point Beau

Do we want just one focal point? I thought the idea was three talls in the forwardline.

It never worked, having Kosi and Roo in the same forward line, they would always go for the same ball, and with Kosi's peripheral vision, that was just asking for trouble.

That was one of the things that impressed me so much with Wilkes this year, though. Right from his first game with us (against Melbourne, that night when he kicked 3 and was subbed off when he was on fire), I was watching him very closely (from behind the goals that night, on just below the top level, level 2/3) and he really impressed me with his ability to know when to go for marks and when to stay out of contests.

He has genuine "footy smarts" up forward and on occasions when Kosi would just crunch Rooey, Beau would stay out of those contests, to let Roo fly without so much competition, but when it was his time to go, he would. I was really impressed with his team-first attitude and smarts. I dare say he won't give away as many silly/clumsy free kicks and ridiculous 50m penalties as Kosi has, either, if he plays. :thumbsu:

Perhaps Wilkes will be working hard on becoming a key defender with Max in the off-season? I realise he looked poor in that role last season....

Pretty sure that Beau has proven time and time again that he is rather awful down back. The difference between him down back and him up forward is like night and day!

Perhaps a preseason spent on developing him as a key back may work? Just throwing up ideas cos Mitch Brown may not get to us.

I saw some of the West Coast game from early in the year which was a nice little reminder how awful Wilkes played as a backmen. Not his fault of course because that's not his natural position.

We need a big key defender more. Up forward we've got Roo, Stanley, Kosi  and now Lee as tall options. Down back we've got undersided Gwilt and Simpkin taking the big boys.
I don't think a pre season will turn Beau into a good FB, Kosi shouldn't be in the team so that leaves us with two pretty skinny forwards in Roo and Stanley. We need Beau to be a bash and crash FF

He played in defense for a coniderable time with the Eagles. It seems the problems we saw were there then ( though maybe not as bad as after he played forward for a season ).
Seems we were lucky they never tried him as a forward.

Lee will compete with Kosi, Wilkes and Stanley for the 2nd and 3rd Tall/2nd ruck man spots. The best performing pair will get the choccies it's pretty much as simple as that IMO. Markworth is also a chance to crack a game or two though perhaps he's still a bit green to expect much from this year.

Lee could be anything from an ok VFL forward to a revelation at the higher level.

We invested quite a bit into this lad, I hope he delivers.

He is a very good player in patches, can look extremely athletic with good hands. His knocks are his consistency and heard from some Claremont people he is perhaps a little soft both mentally and physically which is what scared off WC and Freo who both looked at him strongly last year.

I would have liked WC to get him last year for a rookie pick, not sure that much has changed this year but he has just proven himself that much more. I think he will be a solid player for you but not a genuine KPP - little bit like Brent Staker actually (KPP height and size but not mentality but still very talented).
