Toast Tom Lonergan

Does anyone else get the feeling Lonners is rested for structural reasons, but is listed with a calf injury to avoid embarrassment to him or unnecessary attention/speculation?
He's been outstanding this year but seems to be injured as soon as we play a small forward heavy opponent.

Not with Carlton playing Waite and O'hAilpin, they would have played Lonergan if he was available to keep Scarlett free to be creative.

There's a couple of guys in our team who will be hoping and praying that Tom returns next week......

Clearly best 22 and absolutely vital to our defensive structure.

I think Lonergan will be straight back in, if fit.

He kicked 36 goals in half a season. He definitely wasn't as bad as people make him out to be as a forward.
true, and I would not mind him going forward, not always, but maybe as needed. Hawk back, Loners forward etc. At times.
But overall, love him in defence, and again, would be so deserving of a premiership medallion.

Probably will become the most important player for us on Friday night:thumbsu: I reckon he'll put his hand up and take on Kennedy. If he takes this scalp, the neighbours are gonna start complaining about the smell.

My word he has some big jobs to come in September, Franklin, Cloke. He could become a legend.

Our back six, er seven, is formidable, clearly the best in the league.

Lonnergan is even being regarded as a top league player by the greater majority of the media. Is continuing to become a top tier player and is capable of forming a formidable partnership with taylor, absolutely vital in September considering the other top sides are quite reliant on key big men up front

Yeah good game Lonners, some of his spoils were pretty good. One where he reached right around his opponent, and got his fist in.

Nice.

Though I still worry when he tries to kick, his defence was generally good out there

Even Scarlo looked shaky kicking out of defense last night, he wasn't alone.

Lonergan's got a great ability to stay with his man on the lead, that's what has impressed me most with his rise. He makes his opponent earn every kick.

A big man for the big jobs, good on you Tom, gee! I'm glad you didn't walk on this club.

What has been lost in the discussion over Brown's latest car-crash collision is the response of his direct opponent, Tom Lonergan.

... he plunged in because in Lonergan's world if your opponent goes, so do you.

Lonergan plays with one kidney because of the dramatic Skilled Stadium collision that saw him nearly lose his life as litres of blood ebbed from his body.

I'm fairly convinced now he's both the bravest and toughest footballer I've ever seen.

There are many players who display courage on the field; however only one has lost a body part through a collision, and even more remarkably continues to play the same way. And is in career-best form.

Put simply, I'm in awe of him in that regard.

Good point - Lonergan has really put in for the Cats last 2 seasons.

I still have lingering doubts - as I am used to watching and expecting a tall marking backman like Taylor, Scarlett or Egan. Lonergan at this point is more of a negator. I just need to get more used to that sort of player.

But he has done some very good jobs on the big opposition forwards. And that is what counts - his direct opposition have not heavily scored on him or influenced the outcome of the gake too much.

However we also look a little slow when we Scarlett, Lonergan, Milburn, Ottens, Pods, Hawkins, Vardy and Taylor all in the onse side. All players who will probably be in the team (maybe minus Vardy).

Really hard to see us to easily overcome quick skillful teams like Carlton.

On the other hand Collingwood, WC and Hawthorn (with full compliment of players available) are pretty big as well - and these clubs are doing well. But all 3 clubs are a bit quicker than us.

I think the problem is we are really in a transition year - and going 13-14 zip made us think we were ready for another full on Premiership tilt this season.

It seems you need a good second mobile ruckman who can go foward - and for us that is Vardy. But he is too young, too green, too thin at present to be that good second ruckman/forward for us. In otherwords he is probably another season away from being strong enough to make a stronger contribution to the team.

Menzel, Duncan, THunt and Bundy will be far better for their experiences in the Seniors and be stronger players after another pre-season.

We will be a better side probably next year.

Since the last Premiership win we have needed to replace Ablett the unreplaceable - Rooke's departure is sorely missed and now Mooney appears gone as well. I think the departure of 3 players the calibre of these footballers would hurt any club.

Add in an aging list - Milburn, Ling and Ottens notably.

So to be in contention for a flag is a pretty awesome effort really. And not helped by the Thompson and Ablett issues and the loss of Costa.

But nonetheless this year is a transition one for us - and so will next season as well I suspect. So if we can win a flag this year it would seriously be a fantastic outcome in the true sense of the word.

And Lonergan is one of the better stories for us this year really - along with Bundy, Duncan and Menzel.
