MRP / Trib. Tom Lynch -How many?

Out of interest, are there any tribunal experts who can recall if there’s been a similar incident in the past?

I.e. a player taking a deliberate swing at another but not connecting fully.

Obviously, there’s the Bugg, Brayshaw, Houli etc ones, but I can’t remember one where a player has swung this hard and not KO’d someone.

I find it interesting that there's no people outside of a few Richmond nuffies offering even any slight counterbalance of mitigation.

Just like the Richmond players not backing him up, eh?

Its almost as if.... there's no justifiable excuse?

He clearly did the wrong thing there's no denying that. Players at the time probably thought its not worth the fine. Also Lynch is not the type of player neutral supporters will defend in any situation. He's always pushed the limits despite rarely getting suspended.

I thought he'd get 3-4weeks. Not sure why the MRP can't just give out a penalty like that and everyone moves on. Even if its 5 weeks. Let the club challenge it if they don't like it. Personally I think 5-6weeks is a bit much for a incident with 0 injuries.

The idea that an open-handed strike can't cause serious injury is ludicrous (I've not seen conclusive evidence it was open-handed). Lynch is lucky he didn't connect with Butts' brainstem.

Also, how was Lynch frustrated at "being held all day" when no evidence can be provided of the holds.

Tex should have been fined for his tap on Ralphsmith. Not at all in the same category as Lynch's haymaker.

Let's just wait and see how it unfolds. 4 weeks maximimum mainly for optics I think.
From 1 week to 4. You've folded.

If Lynch cops 4 weeks just for "optics" surely the Club will take it to the Supreme Court?

Honest question: What actions does Lynch cop that other KPFs don't, that people are trying to use it to semi-justify him belting a bloke?
Tom Lynch averages more than one free kick per game alongside other notorious free-kick getters Franklin and Curnow, he's as protected as players of that ilk. Jack Riewoldt and Tom Hawkins averaged 0.9 and 0.8 respectively for context.

It was really quite obvious if you looked at each incident without club coloured glasses. Despite the way that Pickett jumped at Bailey Smith, there wasn't actually a lot of force in the collision. And only made the most glancing head contact. Most of the impact was actually to the body. Smith's long hair flapping around also makes it look more dramatic.

Bailey Smith also got up and continued without issue.

Shane MacAdam absolutely ironed out Jacob Weyr with a bump that whiplashed Weyr's head into him.
I am a tiger's supporter and I think that Pickett should of gotten more for his bump. Sure McAdam ironed out Wehr, McAdam attempted a legal bump but still got him high. Fair suspension. But just because Smith wasnt concussed, Pickett escaped a large suspension and they didnt use the "Potential to cause harm". Pickett left the ground to hit Smith so there was never an attempt to make a legal bump.

This is the point about the Lynch situation. The potential to cause harm argument doesnt seem to be added when it is an illegal action. The suspension should end up around 7 to 9 but it will end up around 5 to 6 and no mention of "potential to cause injury."

Even before this latest incident, if you'd asked me who I think is the dirtiest player currently playing in the AFL, my thoughts would have immediately gone to Tom Lynch.

There are tough, aggressive hard nuts in our game... then there's players who are just filthy grubs. Lynch is the latter.

Can I just point out that the two times Lynch does a dickhead move in that montage, you can see (from Lynch's POV) a perceived feeling of injustice.

First time Lynch whacks Butts that was paid as a high free kick that wasn't actually a high free kick (around 0:30 mark of the video), Butts clearly holds Lynch down with both hands and prevents Lynch from going for the mark whilst Butts himself doesn't really attempt to go for the ball. I think everyone can understand why Lynch feels he should've gotten a holding free kick in that specific scenario.

I've spoken about the second dickhead moment from Lynch earlier, so not going to hash over it again.

No other KPF is trying to KO their direct opponent as blatantly as Lynch was. Why should anything change because of Lynch's poor temperament?

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Has all through footy history.
Players frustrations build from off the ball unfair tactics.

I remember Greg Williams used to warn his tagger before the first ball was bounced, "if you dog me today I'm going to whack you". And he would.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious to most observers that Butts was tearing Lynch a new one. Even Richmond supporters gave him the bronx cheer after his first posession. Eventually he reacted by spitting the dummy. Deserves eight for being a grubby tool.

It's a terrible excuse. There is no excuse.

He's tried to king hit him. And many in this thread are saying it's understandable.

I got plenty frustrated when I played the game. Never gave out anything other than the token jumper hold.

In my opinion, Lynch should cop the same as any of the big suspensions of the last decade (Gaff, Bugg, etc). It's time the AFL started suspending on intent rather than incidental contact. It's obvious that Lynch's primary aim was to harm Butts.
