this could be a permanent move.

were two goals behind collingwood and geelong in terms of average number of goals kicked. our "score for" on the scoreboard is shocking and the lowest in the 8. our defence is of course the best. mcqualter is down on goals, we havent had roo. so i think what were doing is trying to find a player in mcqualters role (i.e. the extra forward) who can do the defencive things but also kick 1-2 each game.

i've also noticed that teams are sending a defender down back on gilbert, and letting mcqualter run loose to a certain extent. if we can find a damaging forward to take up mcqualters role then it will make them think twice before taking one of their defenders and sending them down back to negate gilbert.

overall i think were just tweaking our structure in time for finals.

Has Jack Steven effectively taken McQualter's spot, with Lynch filling the spot taken by the likes of Gwilt and Dempster at various times last season?

I think by the end of next year Lynch, Steven, A. Smith, Stanley and Armitage (if he's still here) will have permanent selection in the side. This is just the process of phasing that in.

McQualter is in serious trouble career-wise if you ask me.

Bloody terrible tonight.

Won't play again this year you wouldn't of thought.

Seemed to be his number #1 objective in Q1 was to stop fletcher and get some ball himself.

Fletcher had 6 touches in 8 minutes.

Had his chance to kick one with an open goal and split the behind/goal posts to the right.

Hopefully he has his eye on which ones are the big sticks next time.

Overall just underdeveloped and we don't have the time left this season.

Whilst I didn't disagree with comments that Lynchy would play up forward, I'm disappointed that this was the case. His kicking has been the weakest part of his game lately and now we have another player who has one role at VFL level (which he does well) and a completely different one in the AFL.

And fancy Red Bull having 21 handballs in a game of footy - what a waste. Lynch could have done a role in the back six to release Fish or Gilbo into the midfield, with our second best forward (BJ) causing match-up mayhem like Morefrees seems to do to us every time.

I'm hoping we are holding Plan B back for the finals.

Might be some room to develop him as a mid, he's not really that tall.

Could be another 190cm midfielder like Goddard and Pendlebury.

Possibly. He is not as far off as some have blurted out, but if he wasn't impacting as a forward in the VFL why would Ross think anything would be different with the Saints? Lynchy isn't that strong in contested marking situations and his kicking has been off of late. Would have been a different proposition down back, and to see us kick some late goals with Fish and Gilbo in the midfield and Goddard up forward makes me wonder what the club was thinking with the original set-up.

Why the hell did he play ahead of Rhys Stanley? We could of gotten an extra game into Stanley, instead Lynch was played and from what I have seen is not AFL ready.

Because Lynch has been performing in the VFL and Stanley hasnt been.

Call me crazy, but im not going to pot a guy playing in his first senior game. A game where numerous others, who not to mention recieve nice phat paychecks every week contributed diddly squat.
Remember Goddard was hardly inspiring in his early years. Fast forward, he's a sexy beast.

Here's my ridiculous theory. Maybe if Tommy was played in a position he's been played at in the VFL for the majority of the season, his debut may have been a little more effective. The mind boggles.

When he missed that shot in the third quarter, it was not that he missed, it was the "deer-in-the-headlights" look he had on his face as he kicked it. A less pressure-filled goal he'll never kick in AFL footy, and he reacted like Motlop when the siren went in Launceston.

Call me crazy, but first round draft picks, first and foremost, should be winners who want the footy, and not scared little children like Lynch looked.

All we are looking for is a glimpse that a bloke belongs at that level. Didn't see one thing on Friday night that makes me feel Lynch belongs. I sincerely hope I am proven wrong.

(For the look you have if "you belong", see Steven, J.)

Wasn't Jack's first game pretty dear in headlighty?
RL usually gives newbies a bit of a run, and with no-one obvious to come in for Dawson, Lynch may well get a shot in the backline.

Nearly 2 years for a first round draft pick to debut, dont you think he would have already played if he was going to be of good sorts.
Might be a bit part payer over the next couple of years, maybe.

The Steven, J. with four possessions (none of which were contested) last night ?

I will never criticise or judge a player after their first game. Seriously how many of our players have you seen come and blow us away on debut? I cant think of many from memory and i can think of many who copped heaps even for the first 20 or so games of there career. Sammy fisher, Jones, Gilbert, Mcqualter, blake, Dawson, Gram, Goddard, Montagna.

None of these had great starts to their careers and all took time to find there feet in the AFL. Young players deserve time and patience to come in their own and no doubt Tom will be a good player for us and anyone who writes him off after one game doesnt know much about football.

We have plenty of young players who are suffering a bit atm of lack of opportunity due to our success in the last few years.

Time and patience :thumbsu:

Some first game stats of more deers-in-headlights/ scared little children.

Gary Ablett 4 Kicks 4 Handballs 1 Turnover

Nick Dal Santo 3 Kicks 4 Handballs 3 Turnovers

Jack Riewoldt 2 Kicks 3 Handballs 2 Turnovers

Nick Riewoldt 3 Kicks 0 Handballs 1 Behind

Dane Swan 5 Kicks 1 Handball

Shit, Lynch didn't get 19 touches and a goal from outside 50 in his first game so he must not "belong"?... Delist him?

First time in front of a 35,000 crowd

Some of you people have obviously never kicked a football.
