Past Tom Mitchell - AFL MVP, Dual AA Rover, B&F Winner, 2018 Brownlow Medallist - traded for pick 14 2016

Is this the thread where I can say "I told you so"?

I said at the time that we would be better to get rid of Hanners or Parker than to rid of Mitchell (and my posts at the time will show this). Players like Mitchell are so few and far between, even rarer if they're a father/son, and we handed him to Scumthorn on a platter.

Some will argue that Hanners and Parker were tied into contracts but the fact is that blind Freddie could see how good Mitchell would be 2-3 years before he was traded. We should have planned for that scenario.
You can't force players to be traded

You're missing my point. We knew how good Mitchell was well before we gave them new contracts. Mitchell should have been our priority at that time. Not Parker or Hanners. It was poor list management.

Lol. Yeah right.

100%.

Plays for a Victorian club, must be the greatest ever. I don't buy it.

Parker and Hannebery are better and they play for a non-Victorian team, imagine how good they would be if they played for a Victorian team?

Behind Parker AND Hanners? Bloody hell! You're funny.

The umpires, coaches, players, commentators and everyone else seem to disagree with you.

Remind us who we signed on before Mitchell.
Remind us who finished just as high as Mitchell in the Brownlow more than once.
Remind us who won MVP's and B&F's.

Oh that's right, Parker and Hannebery.

Mitchell is in NO WAY superior to either Parker or Hannebery.

AND, he never will be superior.

It’s a new era of media bandwagonning where everyone judges players based on disposals even without watching them play.

Actually go and assess Mitchell’s 40 possessions a game and tell me how many are actually worthy of the accolades he is getting.

15 of his possessions a game are from creeping around the back of a player who’s marked the ball and asking for the handball. Another 15 come from him running at players and asking for it on the outside. Given the other 10-15 are decent contested possessions.

When you actually nut him out, all he is is a standard very good midfielder. His impact is not even close to what his stats sheet shows. He’d struggle to clean kennedy’s boots when it comes to the hard stuff. And don’t even start me with his disposal quality.

Everyone thinks he’s going to break the polling record at the Brownlow. Yes he might win but I’ll guarantee that the games he’s expected to get 3, a lot of them will be 1s and 2s aslong as the umps don’t judge using stats. There’s also no one else in their midfield half decent enough to take votes off him making the illusion even more telling. He’d be the bag boy for Sam Mitchell and Lewis in their primes.

He took Ablett, Selwood, Danger, Kelly, Menegola to the cleaners when they played. Was fascinating watching clearance specialists like Ablett, Selwood, Danger getting absolutely destroyed by Mitchell at the "hard stuff".

Mitchell is pretty much an elite inside mid + decent outside mid in one. Go take a look at his contested possession rate and clearance numbers before saying all his touches are useless (Kennedy has NEVER in his career gotten 173 clearances and 352 contested possessions in the home and away season). No Tom Mitchell Hawthorn becomes a bottom 8 team.

Although I do agree that mitchell would've never reached his potential at the swans playing behind kennedy, parker, hannebury and half tagging.

He's not #1 in AFL. Although he's probably top 5 midfielder.

1. Dangerfield
2. Martin
3. Fyfe
4. Mitchell
5. Cripps

I know exactly which game you are talking about and I watched it closely, was no where near as impressed as what you are and a lot of what I mentioned, he actually did. Kennedy is a bull, he gets the ball out of the contest for us so that someone else can get the clearance same as Cripps, Fyfe, Martin, danger who all get in and under. The comparison to them is an insult if anything. Mitchell gets a lot of his clearances fed out on a plate for him and they’re mostly slapped onto the boot rather than directed. I agree he plays the outside game very well, and his ability to get to multiple contests is 2nd to none. But that’s all I give him, not even close to the top 5. Only reason why hawks are top 8 is because the comp is bang average, including your mob

Fun fact

This is the first season where Mitchell has averaged more contested possessions than uncontested possessions.
Ummm don’t think so
He’s had 100 more uncontested than contested
Every other gun mid in the comp averages +100 contested compared to uncontested. The illusion is plain obvious

Dangerfield, Martin, Fyfe and Ablett could, and have, played as a forward to devastating effect.

Mitchell is not in the same post code as them.

Mitchell gets 100 possessions whether Hawks win by 10 goals or lose by 10 goals. That alone says volumes about the influence he has on the result of a game.

Your club is very generous. I cannot think of another club that has assisted the Hawthorn re-build as much as yours.
To be honest, I don't mind having an effective trade relationship with a few teams. Swans players know that they can walk if they want to and we won't get in their way, it helps us be a destination club for players like Franklin etc.

There's posters on our board who reckon JPK would have upset our 'midfield balance' if we had kept him at HFC.

We just need to enjoy these comments as fandom in its most pig-headed and poetic form.

Agree, some people make out Mitchell is no good with their carry on, he was huge in finals matches for us when he played, winning possessions and kicking a goal or two from the midfield.

Some people just can't accept that others don't rate Mitchell as highly as they do.

He is gone.
He wanted to go.

Good luck to him.
He ain't coming back.
