I'd be betting Heeney for one can do that whilst not 'just getting the ball 18-20 times". I respect McGlynn, but half the reason our midfield got smashed in the GF is we didn't have enough genuine ball winners. McGlynn is a terrior but he isn't a ball winner. He can be good a small defensive forward though.

But you have been saying Mitchell is too one dimensional and slow because he just wins the ball to get a game........I am confuddled now.

I mean if you are talking genuine ball winner you have just described Mitchell.

He is slow though, Heeney for one isn't. That said I don't want us to burden Issac too much. He is a gun no doubt but lets not kill him. Would rather play Hewett for one. I'm happy playing Mitchell instead of Bird.

I sometimes am not sure on this pre conceived structural ideas you have for a footy side

Mitchell has shown he can accumulate possies but you wont fit him unless we drop bird

Reid has to stay because we must have a spare defender even though he mainly plays forward

Mcglynn has to go forward because he cant win the ball and can be a defensive forward, but bird does that a bit

But mitchell parker kennedy could rotate forward and mid, add bird in as well

Cant be that hard to crumb and keep the ball in around buddy and tippett

I'm still amazed we didn't target an actual crumbing forward last year, might sound like a broken record, but it is beyond dumb. A guy like Jack Lonie (taken by St Kilda) was there for the taking. you have two big talls, I guess add goodes and Pyke and you have 3-4...and you don't have a crumber?

Mitchell has issues, especially his kicking he floats it everywhere. Effective disposals is such a useless stat, you kick it to a contest...that is 'effective'. It is an awful stat. Against Richmond (and yes he had a good game) he floated his kicks a lot. Reid I would prefer to have to backup our defence as it is the hardest place on the field to have depth during a game, lose a defender and you are generally stuffed. reid helps rectify this during games. MgGlynn was a forward before a midfielder. He isn't a great midfielder, he attacks the ball, he tackles, but he doesn't win the ball. You need ball winners with good skills. It is why I have been campaigning for 12 months....we need dual sided midfielders that can kick!

Now ideally you are talking a Bruest type but they don't grow on trees. However a Jack Lonie type would help too, it keeps the ball inside 50..unlike Goodes waving his arms offering no defensive pressure.

Well he isn't quick, and he would be slower than every Hawthorn midfielder. If we flip Mitchell for Heeney, Mills, Dunkley that is good business. That said I hope he plays, but I'm not sold there is a role right now.

If the right player is available i am not against it, but Freo are in love with their small forwards, they dont deliver when it counts

Mids who can play forward are better, saves rotations as well

We won't be playing the final at the SCG. Hawthorn seem to do okay with their small forward brigade......

They all push into the middle imo more so than a ballentyne

Hawthorn also dont kick to the one or two forwards as much as we do

I agree we're not slow at running across the ground. However we are slow at transitioning and ball movement. Sam Mitchell won't be winning any footraces but he plays very quick football. Effective, direct disposal is much faster than any sprinter - and that, more so than Smith and Hill, is why Hawthorn are so strong

Absolutely correct.

People keep talking about leg speed. What player can run faster than a kick can reach it's target? Answer; no one can. All the more reason why Mitchell should be playing.

In a purely hypothetical situation what would you trade for him? I would ask you to disregard the fact our selectors appear to think he is NEAFL level.

I am interested in a third parties unbiased view.

As a Swan I would want at least a top 5 pick for him. We allegedly knocked back Carltons pick 4 last year so the coaches must have faith in his ability.

I'm concerned about his trade value now - last year I would have agreed with you. But now, how is he much different from players like Josh Kennedy, Mitch Hallahan and Anthony Miles? Very high production inside midfielders at state level who weren't getting senior opportunities. Even Levi Greenwood, who was a very high production inside midfielder and getting senior games, went for pick 25.

Who's the absolute best comparison for Mitchell? Josh Kennedy. Both highly rated father/son midfielders, both inside ball-winning beasts, both trapped in the reserves behind highly rated midfields, both had showed at AFL level they were capable of excellent numbers.

12 was quoted above by a Tiger fan. I would be ecstatic with that for a slow NEAFL playing mid with no other strings to his bow than an awful kick and dubious delivery. Poor bugger will hard pressed to get to the stoppages on time let alone extract it.

Brock Mclean got pick 11, Mitchell will fetch a top 10 pick give and take if traded. In fact if we flip Mitchell for Heeney, Mills and Dunkley it isn't bad business.

I heard the same thing about McClean...I heard the same thing about a few others. Clubs will take a known commodity over a top 10 pick that could be the next Kane Lucas dud.
