Analysis Tom Mitchell

In a game we lost....yes. He got a lot of the ball, he played well. Poor game to reference though as it was an absolute bog it was pouring. One game also doesn't make a career.

Lets see how he goes this year, you obviously believe he should be picked. I'm with Horse on this one as I see where he is coming from. It is up to Mitchell to FORCE his way into the side, and he didn't help himself in the NAB Cup.

I'll reference different games then

Vs Adelaide in 2013

Really not sure Supercoach is THAT fantastic a guide. He has played some good games, I haven't said otherwise. His issue is the bloke called JPK...he is elite. He is our number 1 rover. There is Mitchell's problem, and if I am a gambling man (and jeez I'm glad I don't usually punt) that is why Horse hasn't picked him. The 4 in question Lloyd, Heeney, Cunningham and Bird are all multi position players. Half of Hawthorn's success is to do with having a number of players having the ability to play all around the ground. Not sure Mitchell has that ability yet. He may get there, lets wait and see.

and where was our "elite" extractor on Grand Final day?

Or look at Sam Mitchell (or even Brad Sewell from a few years ago), a guy not exactly known for his pace and a guy that made our midfield look like a bunch of amateurs last year.
Actually Sewell makes the case for us. He was dropped and encouraged to retire precisely because there was no room for him in the modern game. Mitchell Sam can kick fifty metres with either foot. Mitchell Tom can not.

People constantly point to Greg Williams - they could also point to Paul couch or even John Nicholls as a 189 cm ruckman.

But The game has changed and not necessarily for the better. Jarred Moore might have been Greg Williams, Brock McLean might have been the next Paul couch. Sam Mitchell may just be the exception that says slow little men can't play afl level footy anymore unless they can kick fifty metres off both feet off one step.

I'm not down on Tom Mitchell, but the love for him seems to have as much to do with him being a father son as it does with his performances which have been good enough to warrant more game time but not so good imo to demand it.

We better tell Hawthorn that they should hand over the flag because we didn't select Tom Mitchell:rolleyes:

I mean come on, he plays one good game all year in the seniors with Kennedy out of the side and all of a sudden he is the difference.

Sure we need to work out how to figure out how to work Mitchell and Kennedy into a extraction duo rotation, but unlike Kennedy who can rest forward and bob up and kick a goal or two, Mitchell doesn't have that ability as should in the 2013 Qualifying Final against Hawthorn with missed shots on goal when he was rested forward.

I do like the idea of liking him to Sam Mitchell because while Sam Mitchell was mainly a pure extractor, in 2013 he was move to a Half Back flank, became a All Australian in that position and now provides his kicking skill there will smaller periods on the ball. No reason Tom can't be tried in a similar way because the way the game is moving to need to be able to play more than one position and I believe thats what the club is trying to get Tom up to speed with.

I'm going to reserve my judgement until mid-season.

I do admit I am a little perplexed as I thought the issue last year was that he didn't have a preseason and then battled injury throughout the season, by all reports he has had a full preseason with no interruptions so I assumed considering he was 'best 22' in early stages last year that he would get a gig.

Given Longmire's belief in "team balance" or whatever, I'd like to see Mitchell given a run in place of Lloyd.

Mitchell has plenty of deficiencies, but I'd really like him to be given a sustained run at developing his game at the top level.

But he's still, realistically, a fringe player.

I see no reason why mitchell could not have played this week. The kid is an excellent extractor. Even though people say he is not dangerous in the forward line,i dont think he needs to be. We have plenty of fire power down their not to mention the very capable goal scoring mids we possess.

His clearance work and tackling ability could be very useful when resting up forward

Quick thought: people saying Mitchell doesn't have a lot of versitility but what about what he provides the versitility he provides to the team? In stoppages we are getting predictable, tap to Kennedy. He isn't there? Tap to Parker. Have all three there or even two of them? Or even Kennedy, Mitchell and Jack there and hit it to take while the others are busy drawing players. Mitchell makes sense for team balance, imo at least

We had 1 bad day it happens mate, Mitchell being there wouldn't have changed the fact 90% of the players had an Off day

I'm fine with people saying Mitchell is crap. You're wrong, and he'd prove it at another club, but I'm fine with you saying it. What I'm not fine with is us keeping a player on a well above average salary when he had very high trade value, and the coaches don't see him in their best 25. It is a complete waste of assets, and he could be traded for something they'll actually use.

Use it or lose it.

I think Mitchel frees JPK and Parker to spend more time floating forward. 50+ goals from them would help the cause.

Or we play our best rover in JPK as our rover thanks.

I actually think the retirement of Jude Bolton has hurt Kennedy especially when it comes to being a goal kicking midfielder. Ever since Jude final year of really good footy (2012) Kennedy has not been quite as good.

Enough others clubs want him too

Its just bloody stupid

That's where Heeney and Parker will help as goal kicking mids

In 2012 he had 28 disposals and 29 goals. He is pretty valuable forward as well.

He is valuable becuase he plays most of the time in the middle and rests forward of the centre

and the other truth bomb is that for clearances the Swans are one of the worst midfields in the AFL.

Horse prioritises spread. Its what makes us a force. We take a 50/50 contest to goal quicker than Port.

Doesn't mean winning clearances are not central.

But the key to success in 2015 is in our transition game according to this move from Horse IMO.

I believe him and can see the value Towers brings in converting 50/50 contests into scoring opportunities. Mitchell provides much less in that circumstance.
