Analysis Tom Mitchell

I'm not as down on Mitchell as Cinderella man, but I have similar feelings. Mitchell is too slow to be an outside mid and his kicking is below the standard of most swans, which puts him a long way down. Coupled with ongoing injuries his development has been slower than I would like. He retains a great ability to win the ball inside and the vision with his hands complements jpks ability to stand in the tackle.

I like towers and I watched his games last year and thought he was better than the bigfooty groupthink surrounding him. But they aren't a remotely like for like.

The gf saw us beaten on the inside AND the outside. The Tippett Goodes Reid franklin forward set up was simply too slow once the ball hit the ground and Parker and Goodes were targeted on the spread. Mitchell would have been just one more.

But Mitchell for towers without mcglynn leaves us without any ability to remotely defend this and they simply aren't remotely like for like. So it's pointless suggesting Mitchell for towers.

The real issue is why has Lloyd so surpassed Mitchell that he can't get a look in. Mitchell is really competing with jpk, jack, Parker, Lloyd, bird and hanners. Cunningham plays a hff but has been used as a forward line tagged. Given bird seems to be everyone's tagger, it's really Lloyd or bust.

Towers cannot defend, Lloyd is being picked on memory (everyone knows the GF has been erased) and with regard to Mitchell pace and kicking...err, Google Greg Williams! Google Team of the Century! Google Dual Brownlow Medallists! Just don't Google AFL thugs :/

Or look at Sam Mitchell (or even Brad Sewell from a few years ago), a guy not exactly known for his pace and a guy that made our midfield look like a bunch of amateurs last year.

At the end of the day Mitchell gives the side something very valuable: First usage in a contest.

Many people deride clearances but the flexibility and ability to relieve pressure on defence would be great for us.

The same Sam Mitchell that can kick bullet passes off both feet? I'd be amazed if Mitchell could do it off 1 foot let alone his non dominant side.

Look at the grand final. Our first team midfield is not nearly as good as a lot of people on this board think it is.

They had an off day...Mitchell there doesn't win that GF. There wasn't 1 player that played well that day, Pyke I'd give a pass, and I guess Buddy. You could have had the elite West Coast midfield and we still would have lost that day!

Wow...you clearly dont realise the rejections Sam Mitchell had to get where he is. More fool you!!!!

Fact is Sam Mitchell has just a better rounded game, even when he was starting out. You get Tom to hit a right footer. We already have enough 1 sided players, my question...do we need another one that can only kick on their left? Hawthorn defend these 1 sided players.

How many 1 sided players do you see? 99% Judd, Swan, Pendlebury, Ablett and now Heppell, Kennedy, etc...Your point?

Pendles and Ablett can kick off their other foot, so can Kennedy. We don't need more 1 footed players, we have plenty as it is....Hanners, Jack, etc.

Mitchell can kick off both feet. It was well noted before he got drafted and while I don't notice that sort of stuff a lot I am sure it is still the case now.

Yeah well he may want to show it, every single right foot attempt has been horrible, as it is his left foot isn't great. Now these are not big things if he is playing as an extractor. The issue is Kennedy has that role and is just much better. These deficiencies show up when he isn't in his position

Teams have more than one extractor, more than one full time extractor as well.

Yes but that 2nd extractor doesn't sit on his backside on the bench when Kennedy would be in there. That is the issue. There is nowhere where you could play him if Kennedy is there. Now if JPK isn't fit, play him, he is perfect in that circumstance. Mitchell is horribly overrated at this stage (that can easily improve). He is very limited in terms of where he can play and that unfortunately is a huge issue.

Mitchell actually has to work on either being better up forward or on the outside. The one thing I hope is when he goes back to the NEAFL..I don't want to hear how he got 60 odd possessions. We know he can extract. What I want to see is what he did on the outside or up forward. It is sort of what Horse was doing pre season, forcing him to show versatility.

Could you find Mitchell's effective disposals compared to the other players since you are so convinced he can't kick?

I never said he can't kick, I said he was an average kick, there is a difference. Even his left foot would you rate it in the top 10 in our club? That is possibly a massive issue. Put it this way I would rather Heeney play who can play mid, forward and back as shown in the NAB Cup. Now eventually Issac is a mid but it shows versatility. We got killed on GF in many areas, yes clearances was one, but the outside and efficiency were both horrific. We actually need to adress all 3 rather than just saying 'get more extractors in there'. That was only part of the issue.

Delist Mitchell now. Clearly he is no good.

No offence but I think you are dead wrong on this issue. No one has been more wrong than you are now since I saw someone say that Brisbane were going to win the premiership when they recruited Fevola.

We will see, I honestly hope he proves me wrong. Nothing would make me happier as a Swans fan. I just have my doubts, and it is purely because there isn't a position for him. I hope he works on his versatility as I still think there is enough there to make a very good player with. I'm just not shocked that he isn't in Round 1 barring a late change that is all.

End of the day we all want the Swans to win, and I hope Mitchell has an outstanding year. At worst, he is fantastic depth. I just hope he moves from being depth to being in the 22.

Just thought I would show this

Mitchell was 3rd in disposals that day and 3rd in supercoach points as well.

In a game we lost....yes. He got a lot of the ball, he played well. Poor game to reference though as it was an absolute bog it was pouring. One game also doesn't make a career.

Lets see how he goes this year, you obviously believe he should be picked. I'm with Horse on this one as I see where he is coming from. It is up to Mitchell to FORCE his way into the side, and he didn't help himself in the NAB Cup.

you have to start wondering where his place is in the side, and how much patience he has.

That is the million dollar question. No idea on his set position.
