Analysis Tom Mitchell

The thing is, Mitchell can better too, simply by playing at AFL level...dropping him to the reserves does nothing.. he'll continue dominating that comp with ease meanwhile robbing him off the chance to get settled against AFL level pressure. He already gets plenty ball at AFL level and is and elite extractor, his negative areas will improve as he plays more games at AFL level (still only played 21 games) he has a football brain too, better than probably nearly anyone else in the side besides a select handful (Buddy, Kennedy, Goodes, Hannebery). It's amazing how the people with great foot-ball brains can actually play football.
As far as I'm concerned from what we've seen so far this year he's the only player in that 19-25 bracket, that can strengthen us in a meaningful way i.e become more than a bottom 6 player by seasons end and have a meaningful impact in finals should we put our shit together and get there. Another 17 games at AFL level would do wonders for him.

Out performed parker today and bird so if we need one less inside then it wont be mitchell going
I think it's optimistic.

Mitchell didn't run with Murphy so it's hard to tell whether he'd have done better.

Parker >> Mitchell still, regardless of having a drop of form.

EDIT : Still a good game from Tom

Mitchell should play every week blind freddy can see he is good enough

I doubt it's ever been a question for the coaches of whether he's capable or not. Rightly or wrongly, I imagine it's been more a question of whether they can fit him in while retaining long-term senior players who are trusted by Longmire and co.

At this stage though, I think he's made himself close to undeniable and other players will need to make way when Reid and Heeney return.

Yep agree but its his time now

It's never been if he is good enough i expect they want versatility from him what that is im not sure.

But we have to many of the same midfielders.

Been reading this same bs for a long time now

Just pick the best players on form and ability

Mitchell could be better than most given a proper run

I suspect it's not bs at all from the coaches POV they want him to be something more than just a extractor.

They picked him now though so hopefully they woke up

They have just been wrong imo

If you don't play him because you have the same types of players he will leave and may end up better than those who were keeping him out, sounds a bit like the Josh Kennedy situation...

Do Fyfe, Dangerfield or Judd have good kicking skills?

I wouldn't say they have good kicking skills, but I'd say they have some kicking skills.

They were only teammates for 1 season, but if I were Barry Mitchell I'd be asking Andrew Dunkley how well he knew his wife.

Do Fyfe, Dangerfield or Judd have good kicking skills?

I'd say neither of them are very good kicks but the thing they do have (or did in his prime, in Judd's case) is remarkable athleticism. The kind of brute power, freak athleticism or blessed height and leap that makes them more than just midfielders. They can go forward and be huge threats to win games on their own or take 3 bounces and carry the ball 50 metres to kick goals from 50m.

I like Tom Mitchell as a player, but he can't do what those guys do. He can extract the ball and win clearances expertly, but it's not showing a lack of faith in Mitchell to say that he isn't as athletically gifted as the likes of Nat Fyfe and Paddy Dangerfield. Therefore, to become a top 10 midfielder, he'd need to do other things to elevate himself there.

Incorrect actually. Mitchell has elite endurance. He may not be quick but he will run out games much better than most players.

I wasn't talking about endurance. Brett Kirk ran out games like no other. I wasn't saying he doesn't have elite endurance. I was saying he doesn't have the freak athleticism (pace, leaping ability, quickness) and line-breaking ability that the previous three have. Just like Josh Kennedy doesn't have those things. He's become a top 10 midfielder by being the best clearance player in the comp, having great hands, winning mountains of contested possessions and having the ability to kick goals.

...and now I think of it, what's the evidence that Tom Mitchell has elite endurance?

"He just does" - signed his Big Footy fan club :p

Seriously Mitchell has his faults but it doesn't make him any less of a player by pointing them out, he can improve on them and become a better player. Each of Kennedy, Parker, Hannebery, Jack and McVeigh have faults and so its not crazy to say the same of Mitchell.
