Analysis Tom Mitchell

If they picked Mitchell on his stats there would be no need for this thread in the first place.
I think they wanted him to work on his defensive side which he has improved on and has earned his spot now

On Footy Classified, Lloyd said it was good by Longmire to hold of on playing him

From what I saw early on and what I see now, Mitchell is still the same. His kicking is still god aweful, but the rest of his game is still the same (elite) so I am not sure what exactly it was that has improved that made them change their mind.

He ran with S.Mitchell in the 4th against the Hawks so things like that might be it. Maybe overall fitness?

His decision making with all disposals not just kicking is terrible. The thing I dont like about all of our mids is that they can rack up possessions but poor foot skills(Hanners, Jack, Mitchell) and kicking it forward blindly too much (Parker, Mitchell, Kennedy).
Franklin is our MVP by far and our defence as a whole is still our most consistent even with poor Rampe and Shaw.

All about fitness, tank and versatility I think. I actually sat next to him during a corporate function and he said he had barely been able to train and how frustrating it was. Said he wanted to break into the Senior Swans and didn't want to leave as he wanted to achieve it.

It was all about continuity in training and building his base to build upon. Earlier this season was I think largely a matter of team structure and Mitchell's 'poor performance' when trialled in other positions during pre-season games. He broke into the team doing a lot of gut running and had a number of scoring shots (I think maybe 4-5 in the game before he broke in), also pretty sure he had decent defensive rebound and inside 50 stats.

Kid is elite, his kicking will get better as he gets older and refines the rest of his game (and his teammates become accustomed to playing with him).

His kicking itself is not an issue, other than his kick away from the base of a stoppage (kicks horizontal, his body in all sorts of wrong position - unbalanced).
I actually think it is more his decision making when it comes to kicking, especially long kicks, rather than the skill itself. He will get better, is going to be super player for the Swans over the next decade.

Good to hear it second hand from the horse's mouth. I like Mitchell's attitude, puts his head down and works hard to force his way in. Can think of a few who have left for greener pastures only to find there was good reason they didn't make our seniors.

As for your final point, I will agree that his long kicking style is lovely - it just goes straight to the opposition :P

Mitchell is honestly not a bad field kick if he has time. He's better than Kennedy, who never cops it despite the standard 2/3 turnovers a game under no pressure.

He is an AFL player, if he has 'time' then he should rarely kick poorly.
Our whole midfield team are turnover merchants. Luckily for the opposition, or it would get ugly every week. The only time it really bites us on the bum is against Hawks.

He perceives pressure more often than not. He has more time than what he thinks at a stoppage or at a wing. Can't disagree on the poor turnover and kicking/clangers of the team though. Some pretty damning numbers. I know we handball a lot in an attempt to overcome this but the whole team needs to do some target practice in the off-season.

That's exactly what I was about to say. One example that really sticks out was in the first quarter of the Gold Coast game. He receives the ball and he had enough time to properly look ahead and pass it off, but instead just quickly slams it on his boot and bombs it forward on the side of his body. It made me frustrated because he's my favourite player.

Mitchell is a reasonable kick and has elite hands

I swear some people have broken tvs or they're facing the wrong way at the ground when they watch the swans play

Come on SS, 'Elite hands' ? My dick reckons my hands are elite.

Jetta has the best handball in the team in my view. Long, accurate darts out of trouble that sail over the top of packs. TBH all the Swans are pretty good at handball, though all stuff them up at times or over-finesse. It's accurate kicking we lack. One long kick to advantage is worth a dozen handballs.

You been drinking from the Mitchellites Kool-aid again.
Mitchell is a terrible kick.

Mitchell is one of the best by hand in the comp

not Sam Mitchell levels yet, but clearly elite

Agreed we lack accurate kicking but most teams sacrifice accurate kicking this year for speed of movement

stats also do not back up your dicks views on your hands, movement and output would be well down

Based on what?

Stats say he is not

Watching says he is not

Perhaps you have been watching the TV from the wrong end.
Mitchell is that bloke that constantly kicks blindly out of stoppages straight to the opposition.
Yay for him, he can kick it OK when there is zero pressure, who would have thought an AFL player would have that skill?

Let's get fair dinkum, Mitchell is an excellent footballer, for an excellent footballer his kicking is ordinary.

You said his kicking was terrible, it not that bad is all i am saying

Mitchell rarely kicks out of a stoppage for a start

When he does kick out of a stoppage it is almost always straight to the opposition so thank *$^# he rarely does it.

I was trying to be polite, his kicking is terrible. Not only is his kicking terrible but he seems to take an eternity after taking a mark, then kicks it all of 15 metres to the bloke standing 20 metres in the clear. 100% efficiency. :thumbsu::rolleyes:

Honestly his kicking isn't bad. It's not brilliant - but it's not worth picking out of from our midfield. He just thinks he's under pressure more often than he is. That'll come with experience I imagine.

I'm happy we are playing Tommy at least. No point in having that money running around in the revserves

Honestly umpire, it wasn't a toss, I used both hands
