You can place a contract value on your head in national draft as well. Luke Ball would have had a value on his head.

Not any more. They can set their contractual conditions and enter the ND. They changed the rules on that a few years ago so that a player who has been in the system for at least 2 years is not bound to the 'minimum payments' of new draftees. That's partly why the PSD has become a bit of a non-event.

Why would Freo pay him that when they can pick up a potential A grade mid in the draft or pay a bit more than 650k and get an even better player?

The only way this trade makes sense is if we do it on the basis of playing Fyfe as a CHF for the majority of the coming years. Allows us to have grunt in the middle and a great contested mark forward. However, I'm not advocating it, we should spend that money elsewhere.

I have always liked Tom, and he is a really solid player, and I was always surprised that he was forced to run in the magoos even after record possession counts. He had his break out season last year, played finals and he is 23 years old with 52 games, so from that perspective he is a perfect fit, when you consider Barlow, Mzungu, De Boar, etc will not be on our list. ILoveBarlow# but with a full list he will be in the magoos.

Our engine room needs something as we have not seen the likes of Bennell and he is not the in and under, question marks on Fyfe in his previous role too as the ball magnet he once was, and Mundy has been changing positions. We have a host of young talent, however the combination of Neale and Mitchell seems pretty good to me as they are tough ball magnets.

$650 is too much, but probably not far from. He should be around $50-75k less than Neale IMO - that is part of the lure cost. What is Neale on - must be around $600?

Yes, we need a key forward, but let me ask this to those in the "Freo need to throw everything at Hogan theory" : Did Lockett take a team to a flag? Did Gary Ablett Senior? But then a player like Dunstall wins 4. My point is a TEAM wins a flag, and if you're from the Hawks in the last 30 years you are almost 1 in 3, that does not leave many to share to the other teams! So many great key forwards missed flags simply because the team around them was not good enough. Pavlich and Reiwoldt are 2 such players in recent history.

So I say if Mitchell wants in, I am in - at the right price. Ball magnets are hard to find, and are critical for stoppage first ball use. Consider Fyfe permanently forward?

But you're right in one sense, simply being a ball winner is not enough any more, and certainly you don't need more than a few. Speed of use and efficient usage needs to be part of the package, as well as an ability to quickly turn to a defensive mindset and apply pressure. It's why Mitchell (who I rate a fair bit), is a good player, but shouldn't be considered elite and I can't see how he could justify a top tier or near to it pay cheque.

Jaeger Bomb is on the verge of playing again. All reports are that he will stay with GC or head to a Vic club. Tom Mitchell from what I read is very close to resigning with Sydney but there is a big offer from Carlton on the table. There has been a little bit of noise re: Gaff to Essendon but I suspect he will resign with the Coasters.

Honestly who of any great value ends up being picked up in the PSD (or anyone at all). It is pretty much redundant.

I would hope our targets are on the lower cost scale incl. Cam McCarthy (3rd round), Mason Wood (player swap), Shane Kersten (2nd/3rd round draft pick) and Angus Litherland (Delisted FA). I know many on here crap on about Kersten hating Freo or whatever but if that was even true it was a long time ago.

Aside from hopefully a few moneyball gains sounds like Freo will bat pretty deep in the National Draft.

Litherland is a really tidy little player. I have a bit of a bias as he's a south west country boy, but I think he's always battled well for Hawthorn. He's only about 24 so he could play an interesting role for us – he's the sort of defender we don't really have.

Really battling to get a game at Hawthorn and always first out. On the few occasions I have seen him he has always performed well and has a real turn of speed. Would be handy and logic says he is probably looking at options.
