Got his greatest hits album, one of my favourite albums. Goes from his classic late 70s and early 80s stuff through to his revival in the late 80s and early 90s. Every song is gold, very underrated songwriter.

A favourite from his earlier stuff.

A favourite from his later stuff (complete with Johnny Depp).

1979's Damn the Torpedoes in my top 10 albums of all time. Absolute classic.
The best thing he's done.

I think the Jeff Lynne thing stuffed him personally. Full Moon Fever worked but used that formula once too often.

I remember when I was first exposed to Tom Petty. Was watching one of those old school NBA videos on the Chicago Bulls and they had a montage to 'Learning to Fly'..

Still my fav Petty track but gotta throw in Free Fallin, The Waiting, Even the Losers and Here Comes My Girl....

Yeah, I've always been a fan of Tom Petty. Don't Come Around Here No More is certainly my favourite, but, The Waiting, Refugee, Straight Into Darkness and Change Of Heart are also great listening as well.

Did Tom write that song Cash (whom I detest) stole from him? Was it 'I Won't Back Down'? One of the most perfectly structured pop songs I've heard. Cash's rendering was magnificent, but the song ruled.

You detest Cash? As in, Johnny Cash? H-How....? I understand people not caring for him, but....

Cash didn't steal it. Rick Rubin worked closely with both artists during the 90's, with Petty and Heartbreakers producing Unchained for Cash. As with most songs Cash covers, he gives the song his stamp of authority and made it his own, in his inimitable style.

One of several outstanding pop songs that came from his period working closely with Jeff Lynne, who should be in the rock and roll hall of fame.

Long After Dark is a great almost overlooked album, love the song "Finding Out". "Straight Into Darkness" is one of their very best from that LP.

I found Cash's whole career to be an affectation. Faux sincerity. Cheap sentimentality. He did more than anyone to destroy country music, and turn it into a parody of itself.

I like when Tom sings in a deeper voice, at times he delivers his vocal just like his idols in the same way his band is adept at many styles of music and how it can be played.

"Self Made Man" from Let Me Up album sounds alot like Cash vocally. Also "Something Big" from Hard Promises. "Don't Fade On Me" from Wildflowers.

For a deadpan Dylan delivery you can't go past "Cool Dry Place" Travelling Wilburys Vol 3 and "Echo" from Echo.

Can't wait for Mojo in June!

I saw Tom Petty and the HB in 85 as Bob Dylans band at Kooyong in Melbourne. Their role was as The Band had been in that they were Bobs band and also played five songs of their own as Bob took a break. From memory the songs they did were " So you want to be a rock n roll star ", " Breakdown", " I need to know", " Refugee", " American girl" and " The waiting". From that night I became a big fan. Micheal Gudinski remains determined to get them back here and I cant wait.

Too right, it's been a long time, not since 1986 as Dylan's backing band and before that, I believe 1980 the band came out during the world tour that followed the vintage "Damn The Torpedoes".

After seeing Neil Young live, it is Petty and the Heartbreakers and McCartney who I would love to see tour this country, just once. If fans can afford to go overseas to get a glimpse of their musical heroes, the bands, who don't need to pay the rent surely can for a change of scenary.

Good thing is, the Heartbreakers just keep getting better and they ain't finished yet.

Yeah a real shame Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers haven't toured here for ages. They have toured extensively in the US but not much elsewhere. No doubt they would pack out concerts all over the place here if they toured again.

I actually had the chance to see them when I was living in the US, they were playing a concert in DC a few hours drive from where I was in Virginia. Planned on going with a Seppo mate of mine, who was a big Petty fan too, but something else came up (with his bitch of a missus) and he couldn't make it. Been kicking myself ever since as that was probably my one chance to see him live.
