I found Cash's whole career to be an affectation. Faux sincerity. Cheap sentimentality. He did more than anyone to destroy country music, and turn it into a parody of itself.

...... Really? OK, that's different, I guess. Cheap sentimentality? Faux sincerity? You're not basing this on the film, are you?

I really love the show they did in their hometown on their 30th Anniversary DVD. Petty had the entire audience in the palm of his hands during emotional renderings of "Southern Accents" and "Learning To Fly" which ended with a spirited singalong. He is so comfortable with his vocal abilities at his age. The Heartbreakers still play all the hits very well and improvise and extend numbers such as "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "It's Good To Be King". Man Benmont Tench can play the keys and the guitar playing ability of Mike Campbell, wow!

good thing to is that TP + THB dont just play greatest hits shows
plenty of album tracks through out:thumbsu:

my new fav petty song,wow:thumbsu:

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are definately one of the most talented groups of musicians out there. They can play virtually anything and its nice to hear other people place them so high.

The Rolling Stones and The Who were by far the greatest bands happening during the 70's but since then it is TPATHB in my opinion who have been the benchmark for a group of musicians over a period of the last 30-35 years.

In terms of crafting records, writing and performing music, embracing the best years of MTV making some great videos, and maintaining a consistency very few bands have over these years.

The best thing is that they aren't thinking about hits or the radio and have been playing the music they have always loved from Mudcrutch to the soon to be released Mojo.

yeah if you look at it from a longevity perspective..they are still making decent rock albums when many around them have either broken up or their input has stalled. but they continued to release very good albums beyond their popularity peak in the 80's:thumbsu:

I formed this opinion in 1968, from listening to his execrable warblings, and nothing that's happened since has altered that opinion.

I recommend a soundtrack album Petty and the Heartbreakers did for the "She's The One" movie that had that Jennifer Anniston in it.

There are some great songs on there. Supernatural Radio, Angel Dream, Walls.

Some of the songs were leftover from Wildflowers sessions, and its a nice little album.

bare in mind i have not heard all his albums but how good was petty's 90's work..

the band has a rich melancholy feel throughout that decade. just dudes who had been through alot and were just so at ease with their sound and direction. not alot of out and out pop hits but man the studio sound was at its best..helped by rubin who at the time was the best out there, not to keen on his recent output.

After the band's association with Jeff Lynne "Full Moon Fever" solo and "Into The Great Wide Open" band, there was a definate mellowness to Petty's output continuing through the 90's.

Wildflowers was recorded live and was crafted over a longer period and it has a more earthy, organic and loose rock feel, alot more mature and profound that their 80's material, as good as their 80's material is all a matter of personal preference.

She's The One, the soundtrack I mentioned earlier follows as an extension of Wildflowers. Echo continues with an even more somber but at times rocking vibe. Songwriting is excellent throughout.

The Last DJ was like one epic musical about the dissapearance of freedoms, the Heartbreaker's most ambitious outing I feel.

It was good old mellow master of pop rock songcraft with Highway Companion, with a Jeff Lynne influence in the right places and some beautiful slide guitar solos from Mike Campbell.

Rich, melancholy and rewarding for all those who gave the last two decades a listen.

yeah giving HC more time lately.
its a grower even though i dont listen to it as much as last DJ.

last DJ has some of his best stuff on it.
very funny album,underrated

anyone on this?

01 - Jefferson Jericho Blues [6.0]

straight up country/blues rocker to kick it off. carried by a nice lick, pretty laid back as the boys get the motor running at a
steady pace. Has that mudcrutch rock bar band vibe to it. its nothing really brilliant but a solid opener

02 First Flash Of Freedom [9.0]

A Sweeping epic track which really kicks of the album for me. one of the longer songs on the album at just under 7 minutes, but its not wasted here. Campbell shows his versatility throughout with some great atmospheric playing in the verses then kicking into the larger rock sound. Toms vocals are swimming in a sea of echo helped along by plenty of subtle piano tinkling that comes and goes. bit psychedelic, bit folk. pretty great allround.

03 Running mans bible [5.0]

Switch to rolling organ and reggae mode. This song doesn't change to much throughout like the previous tune. Tom has plenty to say so the band let him do his thing. Not all that into what he's saying, prefer the songs that are either up for interpretation or are emotive personal songs. This one overstays its welcome at 6minutes

04 The Trip to pirates cove [6.0]

A sleepy kinda song this one,tom croons very softly over some nice sombre chords. still very much a band song though as they all pop their head in with nice little riffs and parts. simple song but very engaging melody

05 Candy [4.0]

wake up boys! thought the album would get more alive around here but this song just kinda rolls along with a few chords. its all good playing and all. mike is playing some country style electric..but its nothing on previous stuff. the lyrics are a bit of fluff to. i expect a bit better from the man.

06 No Reason To Cry [7.5]

staying at a down-tempo mode but delivering a much stronger song here. very folky/country, but lyrically alot more to like than candy.
sounds like something from a wildflowers or echos sessions for sure. And its short and sweet and keeps you wanting more. some of these songs have a problem with being a bit long in my opinion

07 I should have known [8.0]

BAM! they are back with the bluesy rock riff drive and swagger that we love. Of course you have heard this one before. studio version has that kick of the live one's which is great. Bit of attitude from tom again and i love that. Its only rock n roll but i like it!

08 U.S 41 [6.5]

at spot on 3minutes its the shortest song. its not a bad one. starts of with tom and an acoustic then the band join in the fun of us41! very simple but thats not a bad thing. lyrically its looking back to way back. same with the music, music of the war. they nail that vibe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

09 - Taking my time [7.5]

''taking my time, slowing down a lil bit''
first lines sum up tom and the lads ay
starts of with a standard blues riff untill mikes Wah Wah pedal hits you like elephant balls!!!
and thats a very good thing. they could smash this out good live..extend it out and have alot of fun with it.

10 - Let Yourself Go [8.0]

nice vocal affect with toms voice here
some nice speak and answer with mike which goes down nicely. cant help tap your foot with this one.
mike has a few nice lead breaks here. like the above tune it would go nuts live i think

11 - Dont pull me over [6.0]

Tom Marly???
whats going on here! the band does experiment with some reggae styles on this album. this one makes me laugh. tom is going on about getting pulled over by the cops or something. im confused..it grows on you though but it kinda breaks the momentum of the last few songs. i predict it to be a cult fav!

12 - Lovers Touch [8.5]

Good thing about Mojo is the different kinds of ways toms vocals are recorded. this is the best one. lotta echo, really clear but still raw. sometimes they dont nail what they are going for on this album. but this one does! Its really a fantastic song, love the chords..the buildup, the band nail it

13 - High in the morning [8.0]

whats this doing at the back end of the album tom???
single material, catchy as ****! should have been track one or two in my opinion..actually yeah the mojo tracklist is a bit strange.

14 - Something good coming [8.0]

stands out on the album cause its alot more personal sounding. emotive tune, love it of course. loving the nice slide at the end mike! perfect song for the end of the album

15 - Good Enough [8.0]

the album ends pretty strong huh. Of course i enjoyed this one from the get go. Its classic stuff even if it does rip of she's so heavy a little bit.
Good enough for Riiiiiiight now yeah. yeah side two is where its at.

Good preview of tracks there MR.

Can't wait to get my copy of "Mojo" in a few weeks.

The 1st single "I Should Have Known" has been quite the hit in the U.S.

Hope people give this album a listen, sounds like some sublime music played by all the Heartbreakers.
