Murray Bushrangers, February 22, 1990, 184cm, 83kg
Highly thought of among the recruiting industry, Rockliff has been desperately unlucky to be overlooked in the past two NAB AFL Drafts. He looks certain to be taken as a rookie, with Port Adelaide and North Melbourne believed to be among the most interested.
Bio: Smart and creative medium forward who is excellent in one-on-one situations. A proven goalkicker who can also run through the midfield, he kicked 59 goals in the TAC Cup to lead the competition. He also averaged 23 possessions at TAC Cup level.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

TOM ROCKLIFF (18, 184cm, 83kg, Murray Bushrangers)

Rockliff is a mid-sized forward with an uncanny knack for winning the ball in awkward positions and kicking goals. He plays a little like Adelaide's Jason Porplyzia, is good overhead and is the definition of a "natural footballer". The knocks on him would be his pace and ability to play in the midfield, not just get stuck playing forward. He's also come back from a really bad ankle break two years ago, and still lacks a tiny bit of lateral movement in it.

Kevin Sheahan

Tom Rockliff (Murray Bushrangers)
Thirty-possession, four-goal game in the TAC Cup grand final was a super performance.Very smart player. Not a super athlete but doesn’t need to be in the spots that he plays. Able to use his body well, reads it way ahead of many of the defenders when the ball is in the air.

Emma Quayle

And please can someone draft Tom Rockliff — he's not quick, he doesn't have much endurance and he hasn't yet proven he can play on the ball. But he is a smart, instinctive, creative player who just gets the ball, kicks goals and make things happen.

Pre-draft profile

Tom Rockliff – 183cm, 83kg – Murray Bushrangers.
Small forward who was very good in last years TAC Cup final series but was over looked in last years draft. Has been a consistent player at Tac Cup level kicking bags of 6 plus goals on numerous occasions. The question mark he has on him is his athleticism and his pace. He is not overly quick and does not posses a big leap or a tight turning circle.
He has had some time in the midfield but he is a work in progress there and his results have been steady without showing anything to get over excited about. Towards the end of the year his results in the middle have been better.
As a forward he is very dangerous. He takes a strong mark and his crumbing work is excellent. He had a reasonable champ series and he kept his work rate up throughout. Even when things where not going his away in the goal department he was finding a bit of the ball and getting some score assists on the board.
What happens at draft camp will determine whether Tom gets drafted. If the results are good then expect someone to have a good look at him. If the results are poor then clubs will more than likely pass again.

The Club used its only selection in the Pre-Season Draft (Pick No.5) to recruit 18 year-old Murray Bushrangers forward/midfielder Tom Rockliff to the senior list.

Rockliff was a standout in this year's TAC Cup competition, kicking a competition-high 59 goals and averaging 23 disposals per match.

He helped lead the Bushrangers to their first premiership since 1998, won the club's Best & Fairest award and earned selection in the 2008 TAC Cup Team of the Year.
He also represented Victoria Country in the 2008 NAB U18 Championships where he ranked second overall for goals and first in score assists.

Lions Football Manager Graeme Allan said Rockliff was an exciting prospect whose abilities satisfy the team's needs.

"Tom is a smart and creative footballer who can kick goals as a small forward and also play in the midfield," Allan said.

Rocky in Lions’ den
Written by JEREMY WILSON.

SKILFUL Murray Bushrangers forward Tom Rockliff had the pain of not being drafted last month wiped away yesterday when Brisbane selected him in the NAB pre-season draft.

Rockliff had been heavily tipped to go among the country’s top 30 footballers in the NAB National Draft after a stellar season for the Bushrangers, however, he was surprisingly overlooked by all 16 clubs.

Nevertheless he remained positive and yesterday the Lions gave him the chance to ignite his AFL career when they snapped him up with selection number five, one ahead of Richmond, who took former West Coast Eagles superstar and Brownlow Medallist Ben Cousins.

It capped off a terrific day for the TAC Cup club with Jameson Daniels (Western Bulldogs, pick 14), Riley Milne (Hawthorn, pick 16), Andrew Browne (Richmond, pick 39) and captain Kade Klemke (Essendon, pick 50) all finding new homes.

"It’s been a very exciting day," Bushrangers regional manager Andrew Carson said yesterday.

"Obviously it’s great to get a few more of the boys onto lists.

"But really it’s just a great reward for their hard work.

"Phil (Bunn, coach) summed it up really well when he said that we’ve just given them their pre-apprenticeship in the TAC Cup now they move on to their apprenticeships with their new clubs."

Rockliff was one of many hard luck stories of the national draft but despite being touted as a possible rookie selection, the Lions were expected to take enigmatic forward Nick Davis or ruckman Michael Rix.

But while much of the hype surrounded Cousins during the lead up to yesterday, Carson said he wasn’t surprised when Rockliff’s name was called.

"It’s hard to know what the clubs are going to do, they play their cards pretty close to their chests," he said.

"But there was enough interest in Tom, it was just a matter of who was going to give him that opportunity.

"I think they (Brisbane) had been interested in him for a while and they felt they could fulfil that opportunity."

Murray star Tom Rockliff left out in cold
Article from:

TOM Rockliff's resume was just as impressive as any other applicant's. Best-and-fairest in a Murray Bushrangers premiership season, TAC Cup team-of-the-year honours and the league's leading goalkicker, Vic Country selection and an invitation to the AIS draft camp.
But despite all that, the Benalla teenager didn't get the position he desperately craved - a spot on an AFL club list.
Rockliff was one of a cluster of players unexpectedly overlooked on Saturday by AFL clubs.
Rockliff's Murray teammates Jamie Sheahan and Riley Milne, Claremont midfielder Matthew DeBoer, North Hobart's Tom Allwright and Northern Territory forward Casey Sibosado were among those not to hear their names called.
"We think there's a lot of really good players who missed out," Adelaide recruiting manager Matt Rendell said.
Rockliff, his family and several mates crowded around the computer at the family's Benalla home on Saturday morning, only to be left deflated.
"It wasn't the best," Rockliff said yesterday.
"The morning was excitement and anxiousness, waiting to see what was going to happen.
"I thought I gave myself the best opportunity. I tried to prove myself and I don't know, it's just what they see I suppose.
"They smashed the first 50 names out and then they hit a brick wall for the next 30-odd. It got to about 70 and I thought, 'Oh, this doesn't look too good' and in the end I didn't get read out."
Rockliff will now pin his hopes on the rookie draft on December 16 - the last chance for young AFL hopefuls to crack the big time in 2009.
It will be another agonising fortnight for the 18-year-old as his future remains up in the air.
In Rockliff's favour is the new rule that allows clubs a total of eight rookies or veterans on their lists from next year. As many as 90 selections could be made in the rookie draft.
"There's been a few stories, blokes who have missed out and come back," he said.
"I've just got to keep putting the right foot forward and hopefully it falls in my favour."
Rockliff, a clever and creative medium-sized forward, averaged 23 disposals a game to go with his 59 goals in the TAC Cup this year.

Good on ya, Tommy Rock Lobster!.

Unsurprisingly Vossy seems to go for the guys who desperately want to play footy, rather than the guys who only want to play when it suits them.

Rockliff was overlooked by recruiters in last year's draft, but he has worked hard to prove himself this season. He was this year's TAC Cup leading goalkicker, represented Vic Country and won the Murray Bushrangers’ best and fairest award, the John Byrne Medal, over other hot draft prospects Jack Ziebell and Steele Sidebottom.
Originally from Benalla, Rockliff shows strong hands in marking contests and has natural football smarts. He models his game on that of Essendon champion James Hird.

Tom is a smart and creative medium forward who has drawn comparisons to another former Bushranger, Geelong Norm Smith Medallist Steve Johnson, for his uncanny ability around goals.

He is a proven goal-kicker who excels in a one-on-one contest and is capable of rotating through the midfield. A Premiership (the Murray Bushrangers first since 1998), a Best and Fairest Award and Team of the Year honours capped off an impressive year for Tom in the TAC Cup.

He was the competition’s leading goal kicker with a total of 59 - 18 clear of his nearest rival - and averaged 23 possessions per match. He was also top 10 ranked for contested marks. On eight occasions he booted four or more goals in a match including a bag of eight against the Sandringham Dragons in round 13 and four in the Bushrangers’ Grand Final triumph at Telstra Dome.

Tom represented Vic Country at the 2008 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, again proving dangerous up forward ranking second overall for goals and leading the carnival in the score assists. His ability to win the hard ball and take contested marks was a highlight of his game.

Jason McCartney says: I remember seeing a little bit of Tommy late last year at TAC Cup level being played predominantly as a small forward, and he's very good in that role. He uses his body exceptionally well, and while he hasn't got the same quickness as Paul Medhurst, he has a similar ability to use his body well in a marking situation. You can see he was a bigger-bodied stronger kid earlier at junior level so he was predominantly put in the goal square to let him work his way to the ball, but what was pleasing this year was the way he could play in spurts through the midfield and he was very good around the stoppages.

Watch Tom Rockliff in action

Re: Tom Rockliff

This is the article that caused some conjecture about Rockliff's mental state, with regards to him not wanting to train with Port Adelaide.

Bushies hold out AFL hopes despite draft disappointment
NIALL SEEWANG

Rockliff is unsure of his next move.Touted as a leading contender to be selected on Saturday, the clever forward is in talks with Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn as the duo decide on the best course of action.
Rockliff, 18, won the John Byrne Medal as the Murray Bushrangers’ best and fairest player last season after topping the TAC Cup goalkicking ladder.
He said he may be able to push his case at an AFL club before December 16.
“Bunny has been talking to a few clubs for me and we’re just deciding whether I should go and train with them,” he said.
“We think it would be best to only go and train if the clubs are genuinely interested.
“Port (Adelaide) has been in touch and they’ve said I could go and train with them but they already know everything about me so I’m not sure what will happen there.
“I’m still waiting to hear what to do.”
Rockliff had come to terms with the disappointment of missing out in the national draft.
“I’m feeling a bit better now, Saturday was obviously a bit tough but I’ve moved on,” he said.
“I’m getting stuck into training, I’m trying to keep in the best shape I can — I’m training two or three times a week with Benalla (Football Club) and doing other stuff on my own.
“I’m just hoping to get into the system — either as a rookie or in the pre-season draft — and work my way through.
“I just want to get on a list.”

As a whole, the recruiting fraternity can't speak highly enough of Rockliff, respecting him as a person and a player. But the question that is constantly thrown up is where does he fit in the overall scheme? It remains unclear if he will be drafted, but you can bet North Melbourne and Port Adelaide will certainly monitor his whereabouts late in the draft. For the Roos, he could be the ideal replacement for the retired Shannon Grant up forward. Hill and Savage will also be considered if still available.

Pick 31 - Tom Rockliff - Small Forward - 183cm, 83kg - Murray Bushrangers, Vic

Small forward thats a very smart thinker and user of the ball he only has to get a handful of possesions to be effective ala steve johnson (geelong). he works players under the ball very well to bring it to the ground where he excells .W bulldogs although they need a big key forwrd they also need a couple of avenues to goals and tommy rockliff is the man to do it for them.

40. Carlton: Tom Rockliff (DOB – 22/2/90, Ht – 183, Wt – 83)

Physically Rockliff does not have a huge amount going for him being not particularly tall, with short legs, not much pace or endurance and only average agility. Not a lot of selling points there and that is probably why he was overlooked last year. What he does have though is football smarts and goal sense up there with the best. He reads the ball well in flight, uses his body well, gets to the right spots and kicks them when he gets his hands on the ball. Those are very big selling points and I think someone is going to be buying this year. He had a good champs for Vic Country and has kicked quite a few bags of goals in the TAC this year. He creates well for others when he is up forward and delivers the ball well to dangerous spots. At the moment he is no chance to play in the midfield because he doesn’t have the endurance. He has improved a bit from last year in this regard when he couldn’t run out of sight on a dark night but he still has a lot of work to do. At the moment a lot of teams are going to be worried that he is not going to have the athletic skills to get free.

Norman Ross

30 – Sydney – Tom Rockliff – Shapes as the perfect Sydney player, short of stature strong through the legs and plays taller than what he really is. Has a real goal sense and a strong pair of hands. Fits in perfectly with the Sydney style of game.

Snoop

# 35 Melbourne - Tom Rockliff (Murray Bushrangers / 183 / 83)

Rat cunning and highly competitive medium sized fwd who is a real competitor and terrific at winning contested ball. Has a very high work rate, can take contested grabs and will generally finish his work pretty well. True he has played midfield at times at TAC level but the knock on him is that he is a bit one dimensional for AFL level as he probably cannot play any other role than as a third tall. Still the Dees will see him as a fine replacement for Robo.

foj1

Essendon Pick 55 Tom Rockliff
Rockliff is a Collingwood six footer who has very good hands for his size and can kick lots of goals. He has some flaws which are his capacity to run- he is unable to run through the midfield at TAC cup level which means he is a LONG way off doing it at AFL level and he needs to create a lot more defensive pressure when playing as a specialist forward. Rockliff does have the X factor though and could become a very handy small forward in the mould of Brett Ebert and Mark Williams. Others will have him significantly higher but to me he is a very good one trick pony at the moment with limitations on his athleticism.

ant555

40) Carlton – Tom Rockliff
Half forward / midfielder with a good footy brain and good skills. Has started to play more time in the midfield and his result have been better as he has gone along. Real team player who will set his team mates up with goals but is also capable of kicking the miracle goal himself. Is not super quick but most questions on his pace and agility have been answered this year as it has gone on.

#44 – Adelaide – Tom Rockliff – 183cm, 83kg, 22-Feb-90, Murray Bushrangers

I’m really expecting Adelaide to focus on their forward line this draft, and Rockliff is a type they may look at.
He is a Medhurst type, but with a little less pace.
He knows where to position himself, and seems a step in front of other players as far as football knowledge is concerned.
He can win the ball when you least expect him to and kicks plenty of goals.
Definitely a type that Adelaide will look at.
Draft Prediction: 3rd round selection

Rockliff's ready this time
Emma Quayle
September 28, 2008

TOM Rockliff was one of the Murray Bushrangers' best players in the last half of last year. He took marks, kicked goals and helped take his team to grand final day. But when he was overlooked on draft day, he wasn't too shattered.
"I think it was good to have another year at home and hopefully make sure I got picked up this year," said the Benalla teenager, who was eligible to spend another season in the under-18s, and finished as the TAC Cup's leading goalkicker.
"You never know the way it's going to fall on draft day and you're not sure what the clubs are after, but it was good for me to stay at home and to work on the things that I knew I had to improve to take my game to the next level.
"That's what I've tried to do and it's just starting to pay off a bit now."
Rockliff shapes as one of the more interesting players in this year's draft. He is an expert contested mark and beats players he seems too small to compete with. He can kick goals from anywhere and would be way up the list in terms of football smarts. He plays not unlike Adelaide's Jason Porplyzia.
But the recruiters will be wondering if he has either the pace or endurance to play in the midfield as well, which means that next week's draft camp at the Australian Institute of Sport becomes a crucial part of his season.
Another query is whether an ankle — which he shattered in the under-16 championships two years ago — will let him move well enough at AFL level.
"I think I've built on last year. I've tried to take my game to a new level and play in the middle a bit more. I've picked up a bit more pace and my running style's improved," Rockliff said.

Rockliff ready for the step up

HE is not overly quick and is not blessed with great height but Murray Bushrangers star Tom Rockliff hopes the AFL world can see past his deficiencies.Rockliff, 18, models his game on Essendon champion James Hird and the early indications are he has the “X-factor” which has become so crucial at the highest level.
Despite coming off a badly broken leg, the Benalla youngster was one of the best-performed Bushies last season as they stormed into the grand final.
This season the solidly built Rockliff has spent more time through the midfield and has again played a leading role for the top-of-the-table Bushies.
In 11 games Rockliff has 34 goals, is averaging 23 possessions and importantly completes almost five tackles a game.
“I’ve been playing generally full-forward and then swapping on the ball,” Rockliff said.
“We have two at centre half-forward sometimes, so I sometimes push up there a bit as well.”
Rockliff’s hyped teammates Jack Ziebell, Steele Sidebottom and Kade Klemke appear destined to play at the highest level.
While Rockliff, Taylor Duryea, Will Martiniello and a few others will come under strong consideration.
“I’d love to get picked up,” Rockliff said.
“You don’t know what the recruiters see, so I’m just trying to do the right thing.”
Rockliff says his pace is his one obvious limitation to his game, but he hopes recruiters see past that and judge him as an overall package.
“I don’t really model myself on anyone, but I suppose I try and play a bit like James Hird and read the play,” Rocklilff said.
“I’m not super quick and he’s not super quick but he was smart enough to find space, so I try and do a bit of that.”
Rockliff returned for a rare game for Benalla a fortnight ago and kicked five goals as it upset Mansfield by 65 points in the high point of the Saints’ season.
“It was good, Willy Martiniello and me only had one chance to get back and play for Benalla this year,” he said.
“It was good to get back and play with my brother (James).”
The Bushies tomorrow clash with their ailing grand final opponent of last year, Calder, and should be able to stitch up the minor premiership at Princess Park Shepparton.

The 3km trial was run in 3 groups.

Group 1 was the small/medium midfielders and the medium forwards - basically players numbered 1-24 in the list. Only 13 of 24 ran. Trial was won comfortably by Dan Hannebery (Oakleigh) with a good time of about 10 minutes 16 seconds (plus or minus a couple of seconds) - then followed Chris Hall (SA Eagles), Stephen Hill (West Perth), Ian Richardson (Claremont) & Sam Wright (Murray). Tom Rockliff (Murray) was a distant last.

TAC Cup Grand Finals:

2007

The Calder Cannons have upset the more highly-fancied Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup Grand Final at the MCG. For the Bushrangers, forward Tom Rockliff finished with three goals.

2008

Thomas Rockliff also had a day out for the Bushrangers, booting four goals. He had a brilliant spell in the second term, booting three goals is as many minutes, all of which were from strong one-on-one marks opposed to Michael Hibberd.
Rockliff was later kept quiet by Tom Gillies, who moved onto the key forward just before half time.

The key forward finished with 30 possessions, and four goals to end the year with 59 goals.

Re: Tom Rockliff

Unless I'm mistaken, we've effectively swapped Corrie for Rockliff -

We traded Corrie to Collingwood for pick 93, which shortened to pick 82 in the national draft, which we didn't use, which gave us pick 5 in the pre-season draft, which was used to select Rockliff . . .

It'll be interesting to compare Rockliff to Corrie in a season or two.
