Scandal Tom Silvagni convicted of rape

Tbf im not sure you can pin this one on the footy industry just because his dad and brother are footballers.
Tom was footballer too, just didn't make it at the top level.

It's not just the crime, it's the cover-up. Stephen Silvagni was very much involved in keeping the case secret from the public. I'm positive there would be many other similar cases we don't know about covered up due to the supposed privilege of the rich and famous.

I would imagine the mental health of almost everyone going through the courts on a rape trial would be suffering. A joke that it took this long after the guilty verdict before the suppression order was lifted. Open justice should mean exactly that.
its been less than a week. that is more than reasonable turnaround from the court.

Silvagni’s lawyers pressed for the order to continue on the basis of their client’s mental ill health.

“It’s not just a concern about his own name; it’s about how that impacts on his family,” Hallowes said.

But Palmer said: “At some point he will have to reconcile with the reality.”
Maybe Tommy should've considered how raping a woman might impact her mental health.

Won't somebody please think of the poor Silvagni's :(

I'm not across how it usually works so trust your call on that. Just surprised it doesn't get lifted at the time of conviction really.
from what i have read it sounds like submissions were made by both sides today before the decision to lift the order was made. my assumption is that they did not have those submissions on hand when the verdict was delivered and would have been prejudiced if required to make them at the time.

Bizarre comment to suggest it's only in the football industry.
I wasn't suggesting that. However the footy club culture of entitlement and "boys will be boys" definitely plays a part in my view. It's not just Australia either. Look at how American high school/college sports stars act and how similar allegations are viewed.

Yea but is it unique to footy? Or is reflective of the rest of society. I’d argue within footy the attitude towards this kind of stuff has changed albeit not enough with stupid crap like MadMondat etc. but with women’s footy, etc I do think it’s changing in line with wider society.

Yeah imagine a parent trying to protect their child. Outrageous

Sincerely hope the victim is ok, considering their case is now being talked about in the very public domain.

The Silvagni name was toxic already, its now ****ing nuclear.

She was on social media last week revealing her identity after the verdict.

Good on her.

Suppression order has been lifted.

Source:
The youngest son of AFL heavyweight Stephen Silvagni, and brother of current St Kilda player Jack Silvagni, can now be unmasked as a convicted rapist.
Tom Silvagni, 23, was found guilty last Friday of twice raping a woman in January 2023 after hosting friends at his parent’s Balwyn North home while they were away.

But due to a suppression order barring reporting of his identity and links to the AFL world, media coverage of the two-week trial only referred to Silvagni as a man from a high-profile family.

Since Silvagni was charged in June last year, a series of suppression orders have covered his case as it moved through the court system.

The SO also had unintended consequences. My mate told me it was the brother Ben so I believed that for a good few months.
Which is very unfair on Ben who was unfairly tarnished on account of his brothers own SO application.
So I'm not sure the SO was helping the family name anyway.

Joe Bloggs's parents don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on QCs and suppression orders to cover up his mistakes. This is the issue, of course they are entitled to support their son.

Read the details in an article last week, shocking stuff. Snuck into a dark room and pretended to be his mate to take advantage of a girl in bed. ****ing gross.
Yep. He's entitled scum.
"releasing the name will cause reputational damage to the family"

No. Just no.

"raping a woman has caused reputational damage to the family"
Bingo.

He Tom had 2 teams representing him. 1 was just for the suppression orders the other was for the actual defense.
most people don't have enough money to cover 1 let alone hire 2 teams for sperate issues.

SOS & the family do not come off well in this article

Fought tooth and nail to stop him being named, even playing the ubiquitous "mental health card"

----

Judge finally slapped them down ....

The gag order was lifted on Thursday after County Court judge Andrew Palmer noted Tom Silvagni’s name had become “a matter of common knowledge” despite the suppression order.

“In my own experience, people talking to me about it, who don’t know I’m in any way involved in the case, have known the identity of this person. These are outside legal circles.”

Silvagni’s lawyers pressed for the order to continue on the basis of their client’s mental ill health.

“It’s not just a concern about his own name; it’s about how that impacts on his family,” Hallowes said.

What parents wouldn't try to support their son when in trouble?

And congratulations to the young woman not accepting a pay off and went to court, gave evidence and saw it through.
Absolutely. How many dozens of women have accepted hush money to cover up crimes of AFL/NRL stars or their families over the years? Even late Carlton president John Elliott admitted it happened frequently.
