Tom was footballer too, just didn't make it at the top level.

It's not just the crime, it's the cover-up. Stephen Silvagni was very much involved in keeping the case secret from the public. I'm positive there would be many other similar cases we don't know about covered up due to the supposed privilege of the rich and famous.

I would imagine the mental health of almost everyone going through the courts on a rape trial would be suffering. A joke that it took this long after the guilty verdict before the suppression order was lifted. Open justice should mean exactly that.

from what i have read it sounds like submissions were made by both sides today before the decision to lift the order was made. my assumption is that they did not have those submissions on hand when the verdict was delivered and would have been prejudiced if required to make them at the time.

I wasn't suggesting that. However the footy club culture of entitlement and "boys will be boys" definitely plays a part in my view. It's not just Australia either. Look at how American high school/college sports stars act and how similar allegations are viewed.

Yea but is it unique to footy? Or is reflective of the rest of society. I’d argue within footy the attitude towards this kind of stuff has changed albeit not enough with stupid crap like MadMondat etc. but with women’s footy, etc I do think it’s changing in line with wider society.

The youngest son of AFL heavyweight Stephen Silvagni, and brother of current St Kilda player Jack Silvagni, can now be unmasked as a convicted rapist.
Tom Silvagni, 23, was found guilty last Friday of twice raping a woman in January 2023 after hosting friends at his parent’s Balwyn North home while they were away.

But due to a suppression order barring reporting of his identity and links to the AFL world, media coverage of the two-week trial only referred to Silvagni as a man from a high-profile family.

Since Silvagni was charged in June last year, a series of suppression orders have covered his case as it moved through the court system.

The SO also had unintended consequences. My mate told me it was the brother Ben so I believed that for a good few months.
Which is very unfair on Ben who was unfairly tarnished on account of his brothers own SO application.
So I'm not sure the SO was helping the family name anyway.

He Tom had 2 teams representing him. 1 was just for the suppression orders the other was for the actual defense.
most people don't have enough money to cover 1 let alone hire 2 teams for sperate issues.

Absolutely. How many dozens of women have accepted hush money to cover up crimes of AFL/NRL stars or their families over the years? Even late Carlton president John Elliott admitted it happened frequently.
