Toast Tom Stewart - Gun Footballer.

Improving week on week and now a fully fledged member of our back 6.
Has the confidence of a man that belongs, credit to Scarlo for convincing him at South Barwon to have a crack at footy at a higher level.

Free like for the man who gifs his tackle on Milera tonight.

The club copped a bit for taking him at #40 in last year's ND, but anyone who watched him playing in the VFL would have known he was a good chance at making it and would give himself every opportunity.

Play's a good honest defensive game, but he's not without talent too; kicks well, marks well, tackles well and he is very quick.
Mature aged at 24, but all things going well you'd back him in to play 100+ quality games - without all the frustrating ups and downs that come with drafting an 18 year old.

Stewart is growing in confidence and level of output every week. He has that perfect combination of ferocity and composure, so he's really hard at the ball (great closing speed, spoiling ability etc) but then keeps his head once the ball spills out. Great disposal efficiency and has come miles in a short amount of time as far as linking defence and attack. Makes quick decisions, executes well and is becoming one of our most reliable defenders already. We desperately needed a couple of players with these types of attributes to emerge as we replaced an ageing defence, so his inclusion this year has been as important as any.

Is he 21 or 24? Scott says he's 21 Geelongs website says he was born 15/03/93.

Either way impressive player, if he's only 21 he's about as good as a top pick.

Saw him at the Essendon game, and assume he wasn't on camera much. But really thought he stood out as something special just the way he was on his man and trying to create leads throughout the entire game moreso than any other players. Then the next few games he breaks out :O

You can never replace the 44.

Never.

But damn is he softening the blow...

He's gonna fluctuate as he grows into the game, but you can see the defender agro in him - and the hybrid effects of Scarlo and Boris.

Bloke is doing an awesome job.

He is just a lovely smooth kick of the ball as well, he pulled the trigger on a pass in the last min of the 2nd quarter high risk, straight up thr middle that set up Mots shot and goal.

But almost as impressive for me was at one point he absolutely killed a contest when 1 on 1 with Tex. Closing speed and speed in general really impressive.

Sometimes it's good to be wrong. He has warmed to the task well.

The thing is ..we all win don't we..we all want great players playing for the cats.. We all make observations based on their potential to be that. If we fail to see the positives initially its still a positive down the track when we do. :thumbsu:

Last night he showed some of the stuff id seen in the VFL , coming of his man, tackling hard, good by foot , good enough leg speed. The jury is still out on if we should have taken 3 VFl guys last year... sometimes you can make the right choice but it fails to work out , injury , lack of development whatever.. but TS has shown already enough to think his selection was correct ,( his probable selection was why I had reservations about requiring 2E)
He will never be Boris..but he is at least showing he is worthy to wear the jumper.

Stewart was the only VFL guy taken with a pick worth something. Do people complain they wasted a pick on Waybill? No. Yet they will focus on the House and Abbott picks at pick 100. Both those guys have been unlucky too as they missed pre season. The other thing that I think came in to the clubs thinking with these two is the potential scrapping of the rookie list. They come in to the AFL system and you could find a Mumford or Egan from nowhere or if not it is easier to make a call on them after 12 months v elevating rookies, if the rookie list is disbanded, than it would be if you take a couple more Buzzas. Potential upside for little downside.

I did tell you all in the offseason when everyone was complaining about us using #40 on him that he could play and was capable of stepping up to afl level. There is a reason he got a combine invite and a reason other clubs wanted to draft him. Is tracking really well halfway through the year.
