There are a few scattered discussions around the forum debating whether Tom Williams should be used as a CHF next year?

Personally, I think it's very unlikely for Tom to go anywhere near a permanent forward position anytime soon. To play as a CHF forward you need to have an innate sense for the game, most forward thrusts go through a CHF and he needs to be directing the flow of the game and reading the play before it happens.

The above attributes cannot be expected of somebody with a handful of games to his name, no matter how tall and fast he is.

As a CHB Tom can use all of his physical atrributes to chase CHF'sr around, this will have the added effect of teaching him about reading the game and learning from natural forwards and how they resond to certain situations.

Tom is naturally quick and unbelievably strong which makes him a perfect mould for a CHB, he doesn't need to have great reading of the game as his opponent will lead him to the ball.

Will Minson is a perfect example of a player who hasn't got a natural instinct for the game and this shows in the forward line as he constantly gets in the way and simply doesn't know when to lead.

Tom Williams is the key piece to our backline puzzle. He allows a domino effect to take place which frees up all our defenders to play at their correct weight division and so you will never see Morris line up on a Franklin ever again. Whilst Morris has been great on the bigger defenders, I'd prefer him to be lining up on the dangerous mid/small forwards who seem to always slip under our guard.

I have great confidence in Tom doing the business at CHB, he hasn't natural football nouce to be a CHF and it's wishful thinking at best to expect him to hold down the most important role in our forward line.

I picked no because I'm strongly opinioned that Brian Lake should be given an extended run at Full Forward in 2009.

Williams is the man along with Tiller and Everitt who I would be looking to cover for his absence in defence.

No. Must play CHB.

Can't understand how this board's so against chasing speculative tall forwards, yet happy to suggest throwing our most promising CHB there as an 'experiment'.

In a game when Gilbee kicked our most goals(NAB maybe) a supporter of another club yelled out

'Good one rocket, You've finally found your full-forward, he was the All-Australian half back flanker all along!

I chuckled.

Because I think we have worked out there is a very fine line between speculative and worthless junk.

this came up in Rocco's thread if we dont land a big key forward in trade week.

and agree play Lake Forward, we have Williams Morris Hargrave Callan Tiller that can ( touch wood) cover the back line.

Everitt was brought up as a player that could be played at FF

People dont seem to understand that CHF is not our problem. FF is our problem. Muprhy, Hahn, Gia, Johnno etc do a great job getting the ball through CHF.

No way to the Lake going fwd idea. No way. Hes so attacking from FB and our best defender.

Try Everritt, develop Grant or trade for Hall. Our only options Im afraid team.

Murphy, Hahn, Gia, Johnno etc CAN play the CHF role but often don't. Look at the final against Geelong, thats where we continually broke down. A true CHF may well have made the difference.

I said yes.

Tom Williams is an athletic freak who is strong enough and big enough to dominate the opposition defenders. I Agree that CHB will be a good spot for him to play, but I'd like to see him given the chance up forward. Having a brilliant CHB is handy but a CHF would be huge, in terms of players on our list, he is the one who can do it.

I voted no based on thinking that he cannot play there next year or "anytime soon", like within the next two.

However, I think if we can get him on the park for a couple of seasons without missing too many games and swing him forward as part of his overall development and if he showed promise then he could possibly do it. He has all of the athletic attributes to play there and while I agree that in most cases natural footballers make better CHF some players with a good work ethic can play well there. Williams is an absolute mystery in terms of capability but IMO if he was to go forward it would be deeper, within 40m of the sticks.

A lot of ifs in there though isn't there?

Williams has proven his spot at CHB so let him run unless in need to put him up forward i say we just leave him as it is and look for a CHF or make one off our list

I know im going to get cained for this but here goes.

Niether CHB or CHF, lets just trade him now for a good CHF or CHB while he has some trade value left. He has been trying to get on the park for how many years now? The longer we pesist with him, the more injuries he gets, his percieved potential will go down, and so will his trade value.

If he could be fully fit for a full season and play every game then there is no way i'd trade him, but lets be realistic here, they way things have gone so far, thats not going to happen and i think we can get more value out of a proven KKP.

Would love to know a current injury update.

Traditionally forwards are those with a better feel for the game. There is no way known that Tom Williams will play forward for at least the next two seasons. He needs to learn the game.

Next years #1 draft pick from the Gold Coast where he comes from :p
ok say Williams has a great year next year, as well as the dogs.

he plays most if not all the games and plays to his potential, do we trade him or keep him and will we get pick 1?

Lake at full back, Williams at CHB. Neither would be anywhere near as good up forward as down back. Lake is one of the best full backs in the league so play him at full back. Williams is young, inexperienced and has only been playing footy for a few years. CHB is a much easier position to play then up forward, let Tom show he can be a good backmen first.
