I remember champion data saying every player that had numbers like Tom in juniors went on to be a gun AFL standard key position forward. I take a bit if solace from that and I also feel Tom is actually behind where he should be in terms of development. Hence the overtime being spent in the ruck to speed things up.

The more and more I think about it, the more we miss Dickson and Crameri and it shows on Boyd and Stringer with us being predictable entering 50. Stringer imo is struggling more than Boyd, Boyd just needs to start marking the bloody thing.

We've been lucky to get a few midfield goals this year as an alternative, but the brand of football we've played forward of centre has been ugly
I think people are being very harsh on Stringer. His first 2 games were pretty darn good. Got held well by Stratton, who is a very good lock up defender and had a poor game against Carlton. He is only young also. I don't think it's necessarily our forwards that have been poor, but our entries have been abysmal. Need to start hitting leads and give our forwards a chance of hitting a set shot.

I hate him playing deep against someone who is excellent under the high ball

If we play him deep it has to be kicked to him on the lead, every time, he is so bad under the high ball as he doesn't have the greatest vertical leap and he chooses not to contest it half the time and hope the ball spills out so he can crumb or get a cheapie out the back. Would much rather if he has to play deep sit next to someone so in that situation he can still crumb as his teammate brings it to ground instead.

Agree with all of that. For all the discussion about him being a prototype forward, he's not good at contested marking. That's why I think we need to bring in another tall, so that when Boyd is in ruck, Stringer isn't our biggest forward.

I think that his year with GWS really hurt him, we had to undo all the development they put into him AND he had to start playing regular VFL which is a massive step above NEAFL.

He has a fantastic vertical leap. He also has a fantastic 20m sprint, getting him to use it is the problem!

General consensus seems to be that we should trade him and our first rounder for Jack Watts.
Jack Watts is a free agent, nice try. The current zoning and endurance
game are perfect for Gunston, Watts and Westhoff types. The static
types of the past are too easy to defend and pretty useless on the
deck.

So why doesn't Stringer dominate the air more often? I haven't seen any of this in game on a regular basis, that game vs WCE last year was about the only time we saw it, but they played a small defence that day. Yes he is quick hence he is better on the lead but our forward structures don't allow him that space too much at the moment.

Irrespective of the form of both Boyd and Stringer, one thing we must improve on is having another body in the forward line when the ball is kicked there, particularly on breaks from half back. Time and again we see two backmen near where the ball lands against our one forward. Either we need a fast running mid/winger to get forward quickly or a second forward camped forward of our press. I'm sure this will improve the effectiveness of both String and Toyd.

Stringer was a very good overhead mark in juniors IIRC; it's one of the few areas of his game that just haven't translated yet.
From memory it's one of the major reasons why dally drafted him in the first place. In that he was a contested marking beast.

I think though Stringer just used his man child build to bully players and mark it. Ever since he stripped down some weight he's lost that confidence. He's still powerful as anybody but he doesn't have that really big KPF frame that he use to have anymore.

So let me get this straight: our seven million dollar key forward who we sold the farm to get won't even get on the park for the next couple weeks?

Meanwhile two key forwards who we let go are coming off five and seven goal hauls in the VFL, respectively, and are playing senior footy this week.

And yet you guys don't think there is anything wrong with our list management?

To quote the great Jake Carlisle: "This club is ******."

I'm just annoyed that we let Matt Panos go. We could really use him right now.

Apart from mounting a reasonable argument saying that we probably do need an extra key forward on our list, I disagree with everything you said.

Who are these key forwards that kicked bags in the VFL. You better not be referring to Liam Jones.

Superbly done.

By the way, does anyway have the stats on how far away he is from Trent Bartlett's all-time record for dropped chest marks?

Who gives a crap about Grant kicking a bag in the NEAFL? A bloke with his talents should be dominating a bush league.

And Jones will always be great at VFL level, hopeless at AFL level.

No point bringing them up.
