A three-goal effort from Travis Cloke and an outstanding debut from Irish youngster Martin Clarke has not been enough to get the Magpies over the line in Friday night's exhibition match against the Swans at North Sydney Oval.

A five-goal haul from Ted Richards helped Sydney to a 15-point win - 10.6 (66) to 7.9 (51).

The Swans had several solid contributors including Richards, Craig Bolton, Nick Malceski and Sean Dempster, though Adam Schneider limped off midway through the third term with what appeared to be hamstring injury and Jarred Moore suffered a rolled ankle.

The tone of the match was set in the first quarter when Richards exploded with four goals inside the opening 15 minutes with Jarrad McVeigh and Schneider also in good touch.

A bulked-up Cloke booted two majors from his three kicks for the visitors while Shannon Cox on the wing and Harry O'Brien at half-back made some nice contributions.

Schneider increased the lead to 15 points early in the second term when he received a great kick on the run from Ed Barlow, and converted from a tight angle.

Chris Bryan could have pegged one back when he took a nice mark over Swans ruckman Earl Shaw but failed to convert from 15-metres in front.

Instead the Swans extended their lead when Ben Mathews scored a goal from point blank range after a 50-metre penalty.

Ryan Cook nailed a goal from the boundary line for the Magpies in a term where new recruit Paul Medhurst settled in nicely up forward and Clarke had seven effective possessions running off half-back.

The Magpies started the third quarter strongly booting two goals inside the opening two minutes to Cloke and Brad ******** but the Swans pegged one back through Jesse White.

When Scott Burns kicked a goal from the top of the goal-square after a 50-metre penalty the Magpies looked to have some momentum but that was quickly thwarted with two straight goals to the Swans - the first a 50-metre bomb from Dempster and Richards' fifth from the narrowest of angles to maintain a 15-point advantage.

There were only two goals in the final 15-minute quarter as the new draftees made their impression on the scoreboard.

The Magpies' 2006 top draft pick Ben Reid kicked his first before the Swans' second pick Daniel Currie slammed one home to ensure it would be a memorable win.

Collingwood assistant coach Gavin Brown felt his players improved after a rev-up at halftime.

"It was pretty slow in the first half. We were a little bit disappointed in some of the things we were trying to achieve," Brown said.

"Throughout the pre-season we set some offensive and defensive mechanisms in place and in the first half we didn't accomplish it, but the second half was a lot better.

"Marty (Clarke) was the standout for us given he hadn't played a game of Aussie Rules before and it just showed he has got enormous amount of will and want and he has put in a lot of work and it was fantastic for him, a good step."

They had the same amount of scoring shots and missed 2 sitters and they played all the rookie listed players and the fit first year drafties. Dont take any notice of this game. Willi have had stronger sides take the park.

Kids got game time and players seemed to get through unscathed . That is all that matters.
i think those two blokes must have watched from the bar, they didn't seem to notice a lot of players

I think we can all pretty much agree it was good that the young fellas got a run and MOST importantly no one got injured from it. I bet the Swans would do anything not to have 2 of their blokes pull up with a hammy and a rolled ankle.

10,000 for a North Sydney match doesn't sound too bad either. They do know there's no off side rule in AFL don't they? ;)

I doubt I would read much into it other than Martin Clarke being the new Nathan Buckley.

It's not a coincedence that Clarke played on the half-back flank, where the great man Nathan Buckley learned the ropes at Collingwood.

Last night wasn't anything to ride home about whereas the NAB Cup is a true indicator.

Last night wasn't anything to ride home about
"anything to write home about". :)

The expression comes from the yanks, who don't write "to" someone, they just "write them". So if something exciting happens, they'd "write home" to tell their family about it.

Very relieved there weren't any injuries to come out of this game. Phew!
