My opinion:

Coll'wood Ben Johnson charging

Guilty - 2 Weeks
Ran at him from 10m away. Was not going for the ball in the marking contest. Very late.

Sydney Jason Ball making contact with an umpire

Guilty - 4 weeks
Reckless. Should have known he was there. He actually pushed him.

Essendon Sean Wellman rough play

Guilty - 2 weeks
Reckless head high bump. Was not going for the mark.

Richmond Joel Bowden striking

Not Guilty or Guilty - 1 Week.
Slap on the face. Nothing much in it.

Sydney Stuart Maxfield charging

Not Guilty
Didn't charge at him from that far away. Was not that late but probably did warrant a down field free kick (as awarded) for a bump outside 5m. (Only just.) He had to try and affect the kick.

Bob,

Hope you are correct with your Joel Bowden guess

Correct decision on Bowden...was too soft to warrant a week. However, I was annoyed that it wasn't 50m during the actual match, as it was reckless and caused one of our players to leave the ground under the blood rule.

The Ball decision is a joke.

The Ball decision is a joke.

Bloody oath it is. The umpire does a crap bounce and then gets in between the ruckman and the ball. What does he expect is going to happen?

The umpire should be suspended until he learns to get out of the way.

What else is the umpire supposed to do? All he can do is back out. Where else is he supposed to go? In years gone by, players did make an effort not the bump into the umpire on bounces, and if they did, always apologised, and the umpire did likewise. Now, it's just a free for all. Where is the courtesy between player and umpire? The umpires try to be courteous to the players, how about likewise?

Simple solution for players: Don't stand behind the bloody umpire. If yesteryear players could do it, what's the problem now?

As for the bounce, the umpire did admit it was offline but it would have been still contestable for the ruckmen as it was bounced high enough to get to. He didn't call play on.

The decision with Ball was a joke. Get out of the way ump! I hope they do appeal it.
I also thought Wellman was unlucky. 2 weeks seemed a bit harsh.

If the umpires try to be courteous to players why did over 50% in a recent survey say they had had an umpire swear at them during the season...if a player did that it would be a $1200 fine.

I think it's unfair because they have been so inconsistent with this rule all season, from Curley getting 2 weeks to others getting off...I don't see what Ball was meant to do. It seemed to me that he got reported not because he ran into the umpire, but because he didn't apologise.

Well, I don't know what they do at AFL land but that's what we/they are told to do.

The reason why we was probably nabbed on that one was because it was on a back out from a bounce, and as the AFL umps are doing now, they are telling the players (I don't really agree with it, but anyway) not to stand behind them and telling them where they are backing out.

Of course, the umpires are going to handle situations differently, depending on their opinion and circumstances. I don't think, from the public's point of view, the umps can be perceived to be consistant on this, unless you are actually out on the ground at the time. That is very important.

I think they should get rid of the contact rule and just use the old and still existing rule of interfering with an umpire's duties. If the umpire contact was ever that blatant and obviously reportable, the free kick and report could be made anyway.

I think that's entirely sensible. I guess the umps were trying to make a point earlier in the season - and I reckon they've probably made it by now.

As for Jason Ball, he has always been clumsy. He very nearly caused us to lose to the Bulldogs in the 1999 MCG Finals game - you may recall Mick Malthouse tearing off his headphones in the coaches box and punching the wall as Jason gave away a needless free kick in the centre with a few seconds to go when Eagles were protecting a 5 point lead.

In fact Jason's very similar in some ways to Jah Jah Binks from Star Wars 1 - The Phantom Menace, who was also banished for being clumsy.
