Tony Shaw on Open Mike

For those who are interested, Tony Shaw is being interviewed tonight by Mike Sheahan, 9.30 on Foxtel. In the excerpt I have seen, he talks about the failures of his own coaching career.

Love him (or not), it will be interesting to hear his views on, presumably, quite a few things Collingwood.

I always feel bad about how little a like him, but he makes it so hard to like him with some of the crap he says.
Also doesn't help that he knows little about the modern game and pulls irrelevant stats out of nowhere to seem knowledgeable.

I might feel differently if I was alive in 1990, I will definitely be watching regardless and hopefully he'll grow on me when recounting his playing days.

I might feel differently if I was alive in 1990...

I think you would feel very differently if you were alive then. Tony Shaw was the heart and soul of the Collingwood team. It is a shame that his coaching career did not work out. However, he was at the end of era, and coaching moved on significantly during the middle to late 90s. Shaw was an old school player and so missed the his era by the time he got to coaching.

not to mention the list at the time

He was a terrible coach, yes the list was bad but he was just a terrible coach.

Having said that though he is a rightful member of the Collingwood team of the century, a Collingwood premiership captain and a Norm Smith medallist, so I tend to ignore his coaching days and remember him for what he gave for us on the field. Anyone who was there, or watching in 1990 knows what I mean right there.

Oh, he also played more games for our club than anyone else.

He's a Magpie legend, plain and simple, I'll be watching tonight and hope they focus on his playing career more than his coaching career.

In some ways he's our Kevin Bartlett, an absolute legend of the club as a player, but just forget anything he did after that.

I love Shaw. Brought home the premiership and played his heart out. I felt bad for him when he was coaching as his list was horrible and from what some players said he coaching style/plan was ahead of that time and the players couldn't execute it. That prob also says he should have changed it around but still.
Sometimes he can have a crack at the club or the coaches, u can tell he is bitter how it all ended. I'll always remember him as a Norm Smith Premiership captain

Shaw played a huge part in ending 32 years of football misery for Pies supporters.
I will never forget what he did for us.
A heart as big as Ayers Rock. Collingwood man through & through.
Coaching didn't work out. Don't mind his commentary (although I am clearly biased).
Can somebody record & post? I can't watch it (overseas).

One of the things that stood out to me when he was coaching was the zoning when kicking out after a point. And also, (pretty obvious), the defender holding the ball over his head when kicking long.
I loved Tony Shaw, gave all he had with limited abilities - bled for the club. Okay in my book:thumbsu:

didnt win B&F

tony shaw only one

It might have been done years back, before the Norm Smith was awarded (1979 for the first time)

For example Syd Coventry in 1927 won the Copeland (and retrospectively the Brownlow), was named BOG in the GF and was the captain that year.

Tony Shaw and Syd Coventry, yeah I think even Tony could live with that.
