Tony Shaw on Open Mike

Derek Shaw was a classic "debut in a final" wear number 43, not go on to play too many games magpie. He was also ruck man size and quite classically skilled in kicking (tall and elegant, not something we equate with the Shaw's.
Gary was the high priced West Australian rover that cost us a mint during the 80's bidding wars. He was a fair player but nowhere near a Wayne Richardson or a Ronny Wearmouth (and they played for chips)

Derek struggled for games behind Moore but did play in a GF or 2.

Gary was, a waste. We paid big bucks to dogs & saints to back off signing him then paid outrageous money to him, Raines and Richardson who nearly sent us broke.

Dumb years.

And neither were related.

Everyone got sucked in on Gary Shaw because he played a blinder for WA against Victoria.
No one knew of him then he pops up when needed a rover.
Waste of money.
We spent big on him Richardson, Annear and a few others.
Looked good on paper, but the results did not come our way !

I knew about Neville it was Calvin that I did not know about
I was also surprised to hear about Calvin, as I never knew about him. Quite sad.
I saw Neville play a few games, however he wasn't as good as his elder brothers.
Ray & Tony were both tough as nails, never say die & bled for Collinwood.
Ray did go on to win a VFA premiership with Preston.
A great football family. I hope the Shaw/Collingwood relationship continues for years to come.

To be honest I never liked him as a player when he started out.
He was small, chubby, slow and couldn't kick longer than 40 meters.
However, over the years that changed.
Got to love him as a player over time.
Had a huge heart, gave his all and was a consistent performer.
It's ironic that Shawry is our games record holder, as he probably wouldn't even be given a chance to prove himself now days. The first 5 years I couldn't understand how he even got a game, and assumed it was because he was Ray's brother. I was definitely not a fan.
By the end of his career, I was a great fan. He was the heart & sole of the team. Courage like no other.

To me, Shaw is summed up in that footage I saw of him sitting on the boundary line in the middle of a game, banging his dislocated knee back into its proper place.

Really enjoyed that. I think people forget how influential he was both on field and also as a leader of men off field.

This is best illustrated by the opposition captain of the other side in Tim Watson saying (paraphrased) if it wasn't for Tony Shaw the player and Tony Shaw the leader, Collingwood do not win the 1990 Grand Final.
