I know he is a Collingwood Premiership Captain and everything, but I really don't pay any attention to what Tony Shaw has to say.

To put Dawes in there was just rediculous, a young kid who has played all of about 15 games of AFL footy.

I still think Shawery is Pissed that Eddie Pushed Him to Bring Mick in and Also Mick De-Listed his Son after 1 Season

Didn't James Hird write an article about Essendon leading into the Carlton game? It was his way to fire them up so to speak, now that he doesn't play, but their record against Carlton is quite good.

Tony Shaw is trying to do something along these lines, which I strongly agree with leading into this game. The players may not take any notice, but at least he's trying to get a message across to the group in the best way he could do it.

Hirdy roasted them after the loss to us on ANZAC day and they've been quite good since that point.

Hird actually wrote a pretty eloquent article though and addressed some key issues by really calling the boys out and questioning their commitment, this was more just passing commentary from Shawry, but I see your point.

Just to be pedantic, Tony didn't write the article he was quoted. But FWIW his quotes didn't sound like out of context and I didn't have a problem with them.

For his part in 1990 , I will love Tony Shaw till the day I die.

Tony wants Collingwood to be sussessful as much as all of us on here.

Tony Shaw calls it as he sees it.

So does Matthew Lloyd and James Hird and even Tim Watson has spoken critically on Essendon issues and games.

They are all adored still by the Bomber fans.

Why is our Premiership captain not so adored by some of us on here ?

Tony is a legend of our club and no doubt will cheer just as loud as all of us when we win this years flag. However there's a big difference between him and Lloydy, Hirdy and Timmy Watson is that he coached for the club he played at and failed BIG Time. For years and years he might be voicing his opinions as an "impartial commentator" but geez at times he has indeed come off reeking as a bitter hypocrite. Calling it like he sees it is one thing but having a failed coach tell us how bad we're travelling when things are going too well is another. It's to this point when he has been sticking the knife in that alot of Collingwood supporters (including myself) cant help but react negatively towards him.

Maybe it is a MM thing? It'll be interesting when Buckley takes over and what Tony says then.

Tony, we delisted your son because he was shit, no conspiracy against you or anything. Let it go, champ. :thumbsu:

well you can question shaw's feeling for Collingwood.... he's just like a lot of people who come to this forum and say that Jack Anthony should be traded or that Fraser and O'Bree should be given the flick...

No one questions the commitment of people who offer opinions like that..so Tony Shaw has every right as a Collingwood supporter to question everybody in the team and make kneejerk reactions when the team is under pressure. Good work Shawy..

Tony Shaw has every right to make comments about the club. He's one of our greatest players but he's also one of, if not our worst coach ever.

It'd be much better if journalists (in this instance Mark Robinson) approached other former Collingwood players and coaching staff for quotes and opinions. Insight from people such as Leigh Matthews, Peter Daicos, Shane Wakelin and James Clement would be more credible.

Writing a whole article on Tony Shaw's thoughts and opinions on Collingwood is exactly like asking Terry Wallace or Danny Frawley to comment on how Richmond is going.

I have a lot of love for Tony Shaw, as a player and as a coach (he did his best) so don't think I posted this thread to simply put shit on him. plenty of valid responses supporting his opinion. My real issue with Tony the journalist is that I cannot remember the last time he said anything simply positive about the club, it's players or it's chances.

Maybe he is always critical to prevent any cries of bias, but that ship sailed years ago really.
If anything general opinion would be the opposite.

Numerous times in the last few years, even late last year, he has said we were good enough to win a flag. His negative comments get more air time and they get more whinge time on here.

The fact is that Collingwood are massive underachievers. This administration has failed to date. Tony can see but if he mentions it supporters adn sadly the administrration get the sooks up.

WIN A ****ING FLAG COLLINGWOOD/EDDIE/MICK...

and tell everyone to F.OFF

Until then Tony Shaw is correct and Collingwood do not cop enough scrutiny from their own.

Tony has said on radio for the last 2 weeks , that in his opinion Collingwood are the Premiership favourites , as he also said we would win the flag , late last year.

We did not live upto last years prediction , but we have a chance as a team to do it this year.

Will it be Tonys fault if we don't ?

Thanks Tony :thumbsu:

You've clearly said we are favorites to win the flag this year... One article that states a few facts about previous big games and where the players need to improve and everyone starts carrying on as if it has something to do with your son or when you moved on from coaching the Pies.

How quickly people forget...

1990 Captain
1990 Norm Smith medalist
1990 Copeland Trophy winner

1990 our only flag in 50 odd years.

Once again Tony... Thankyou :thumbsu:

I agree with all of this, as a player and captain Shawry was great.
As a coach and commentator he is and was total crap. To all that say he is just saying it like it is, I disagree, he left Collingwood bitter and spent the first few years in commentating with s**t on the liver with us. This is the guy who in a game against the Eagles (where we got belted by 63 points at Subiaco) made no changes until the 30 minute mark of the last quarter. At this point the runner was sent out to Scott Burns and I think it was Patto, telling them to change wings. That's right the 30 minute mark of the last quarter when we were down by 63 points, no wonder Burns and Patto told the runner to p**s off and stayed where they were for the last minute and a half. When he was coaching I never doubted his desire for us to be successful he just didn't have the skill or brains to achieve it.
To this day I'm still not sure who was the worst coach that I have ever seen Shaw or Timmy Watson. But one thing I am sure of is that in more than 40 years of following football they are the two worst that I have seen (at a senior level). Hence I rate their opinions on current football as absolute crap, and when it comes to the Pies Shawry got so entrenched in his own bitterness that although he may have got over it, he now doesn't know how to get out of the habit.

Don't know what Tony's doing with his hands, but he's clearly very, very excited about our prospects this year, and this is just his clumsy way of keeping his personal lid in place. And the journo has skewed his comments somewhat, for extra flavour.

That's "Smoky" - thankyou

Tony did a bit of media work in 1994 his last playing year , and 1995 when he was the club runner for a few games.

1996 he became coach

In round 8 against the Dogs we were racing the ball from FB through the center to FF in 15 seconds , very rare in those days.

So after round 8 1997 you thought Tony couldn't coach ?

I loved Tony Shaw as a player, and forever will be thankful of what he did for this club on the field, and I don't think anyone here feels any differently about his on field achievements for us.

BUT;

He was a terrible coach, almost from day one.

My lasting memory of Tony Shaw was a little 4-5 stretch where he got this crazy idea in his head to start most of the team in the back half, even when the ball was being bounced in the middle.

It culminated one day, when the ball went back to the centre, we won it out of the middle, only for the pies midfielder to look up and see absolutely no one past forward of centre for us. It was to this day, the most embarrassing coaching move I have seen from a senior coach at any club. I know the players probably misread Shaws' instructions, and everyone went back instead of a couple staying inside 50, but it was embarrassing.

And his media work has been no better, he "bags" us every chance he gets, but every now and then his true feelings come out, and he gushes over us like a supporter.

He is still Collingwood through and through, but he just feels the need to be overly critical of Collingwood players/coaches to make himself seem impartial.

I will forgive Tony for anything he ever says about the club or its players, because I know his heart is in the right place, even if his head isn't.

Plus how can you get mad at the only premiership captain most of us have ever known.:D

I am yet to find on this thread where someone actually proved Tony Shaws article wrong by finding the Big Finals games and final campaigns where all those players got us across the line and went on to win the Grand Final...

Anyone?

Oh, but Tony's just bitter and therefore his article is utter tripe :D

Seriously guys, pull your head out of the sand.
