Re: Tony Shaw reckons Bombers can win the Flag this year

"Cosmologist, prominent physicist, all-round polymath and world Yo=yo champion, Tony Shaw, tonight stood by his startling comments.

In an exclusive for Big Footy, Shaw spoke at length about footy, the underlying forces buffeting the world financial markets and about exciting new developments in his quest for a quantam computer.

"I was just chatting to Stephen (Hawking) about it today,"Shaw said from his laboratory strewn with broken clocks and rusted car bodies, "footy is not a simple game... it's a game of chess, a cosmic dance."

Shaw sat back, lit a Winfield Red and took a long swig on his Woodstock and Cola can, "people try to make the game too simple. The idea is to confuse your opponent, blind 'em with science so to speak. It's like going down to Cash Converters, unless you've worked out your sums first, you're going to get stiffed. Playing finals is exactly like that".

The interview ceased when Shaw took a phonecall and muttered, "got to go mate, I've gotta bet on the net".

The Fox Sports AFL expert cited Essendon's speed of ball movement and a strong defence, although he said they would need big performances from...young key position player Michael Hurley.
Just a quick comparison:
Hurley is in his 3rd year. Buddy was in his 3rd year in 2007.
In 2007:

  • Buddy kicked 73 goals from 22 games, averaging 3.32 gpg. Hurley has 23 for from 16 games this year, averaging 1.4 gpg.
  • Franklin kicked 9 goals (ironically against Ess.) in 2007, which is his career high. Hurley's career high is 4 goals which he's got a few times including on the weekend.
  • Buddy kicked 7 goals in an elimination final. Hurley will be lucky to get 3 playing potentially Carlton or St. Kilda and their anti-football style of play.
Despite Buddy putting in that elite performance for a 3rd yr KPF, Hawthorn didn't get past North who had 100+ point losses on either side of their win against Hawthorn in the 2ND WEEK OF THE FINALS.

SodaPop, you are on the money. Try to take the focus off the pies, but that's mission impossible atm.

Classic, hey? What Hird and the player group have achieved is massive, so it's a little tragic to read Tony Shaw's comments.
Have they really achieved that much though? Only going to equate to a win or two more than what Knights was getting . . . 11.5 wins in a season is not exactly an amazing achievement given how bad some of the teams in this comp are . . .

As fair or unfair as it clearly is to judge any coach on one year, the new coaching group have improved us most lines. More cohesive, and a much deeper, better skilled midfield. 11.5 wins instead of 7, even though we were half-hearted for half of 2010, is a worthwhile leap - more than 'one or two'. Decent chance to knock off St K in a first final, too

i'm not sure who it was - maybe luke darcy? - but one of the commentators on sat night said that if they were building a team from scratch right now michael hurley would be the 1st player picked. i nearly fell off my chair. did anyone else catch it? i just thought of it again after reading the comparison to buddy's 3rd season in this thread. i think buddy is what, 24 yo now? if i was picking a team from scratch he would be the 1st picked every day of the week

looking forward to watching you blokes put the blues to the sword on fri night. i have a feeling we will be crossing paths again on 1 oct so see you then

Still hasn't recovered from running into the tree.

But I would put Essendon above St Kilda and Sydney.
Not sure about West Coast cos' they have had the easiest of runs, so it's hard to judge where they are at.
And I definitely wouldn't want to face the Bombers either (mainly for fear of losing to them after having sledged my Essendon mates so much this year).

And they do have the benefit of the bye to prepare for round 1 of finals ...

For the Bombers/Carlton/St Kilda to win the GF from the bottom 8 they will have to beat 3 of the top top 4 in Pies/Geelong/Hawks/WCE, with the WCE at Subi.

That's 3 wins in a row against those teams in some order.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

There's 2 sides clear of all; then there's 3-5, then there's 'the rest'. We've got better form than Sydney or St K, but there's still a fair gap to 5th, let alone 1st.
Shaw is just doing a spot of deflection.

Your form isn't better than St Kilda's.

In the last month Essendon have been belted by Carlton and Collingwood. They could've quite easily lost to Sydney and they beat the Bulldogs who are absolutely gone. And even before that, against a soulless Adelaide, you were being put to the sword until the Crowbots decided that kicking to a target was for chumps*.

In short, your form hasn't been as good as sitting in the 8 suggests.

*The coach was sacked/walked days later.
