Heard him on 3AW yesterday take an "inferred" swipe at MM because it took him 3 years to get us into a GF.
If you remember Shaw said (after he left) we would not make a GF before 2005.

A caller rang up to remind him of his words.
You should have heard the other members of the panel come out to defend Shaw and bag the caller. ( the truth is a cruel weapon to use in any debate).

The Shaw years were 4 years of an utter waste of time. Later a "history revisionist" caller rang in and said Shaw was "coaching for the club at the time and not himself" Shaw thanked him for understanding of that.
What the F*ck does that mean?

hmm

What it means Murray is that he was coaching for the long term benefit of the club by playng young guys rather than playng to win by playing older guys who may have won a few more games but would not have won a flag. Utter crap, he had what 4 years?

Still we need to be nice until Brayden signs on the dotted line.

Shaw coached Collingwood deliberately and calculatedly to a wooden spoon and a priority draft pick, knowing full well that his coaching career was at an end. On the one hand he sacrificed his coaching career for the medium term benefit of the club. On the other hand he was a dud and he was going to get sacked anyway.

Ironically the worse the side got, the better Shaw became as a coach. But he was still hopeless.

It is sad that Tony Shaw is a little bitter and even sadder that Collingwood people are so bitter toward Shaw. He is the oly premiership captain we have had in my life and I suspect the lives of nearly every poster to any footy web site. he is part of a dynasty of brothers which has already extended to the next generation. He played over 300 games adn in not one of thoses games did he not his all for every second adn in not one of thoses would he not have given his right arm for a win. I saw him dive head first into a crowded goalsqaure to smother a ball headed for goal in a match against Geelong when he had a broken collar bone. I saw him BOG with a broken nose. I saw him will his team to victory in 1990. Ask Tim Watson what he though of Tony Shaw and what he meant to the 1990 team.

Tony Shaw inherited a side that had recruited barely a decent youngster in the best part of a decade. He started well as a coach but fell in a hole that was partly self made and partly a product of incompetent recruiting and selfish short sighted coaching by his predecessor.

It really ****es me off when Collingwood supporters bag a bloke like Tony Shaw. He is no brain surgen but he was what typified our club for over a deacde. Perhaps if Collingwood and it's supporters could embrace his career he would be a little more amenable. Perhaps with his son about to wear his fathers famous colors the time is right to bring a club legend back into the family.

I for one am not bitter about Tony Shaw.

He is a goose in the press but he's not the only one and at least he's honest. He was a poor coach but at the end of his reign he left the club with some future, and he stage managed his exit with Eddie in a very gentlemanly manner.

As a player he's tops. Thats how he will be remembered - a rare breed - Collingwood Premiership captain and Norm Smith Medallist.

Mark it is not so sad as perhaps you may think

I think most people can clearly differentiate between his great playing career and his abissmal coaching career.
I have not seen any threads on any boards suggesting he lacked courage, I have however seen a multitude of threads questioning his coaching (or lack of) ability.

I for example loved to watch him play but felt helplessly frustrated with his amateurish attempt to coach.
I just don't see the problem. with questioning 4 lost years.
I also don't see how you transfer the topic to be one that is "against the Shaw dynasty".
I reported a talk back callers comments and added mine in relation to the subject matter.
As the Queen of Hearts said "My words mean exactly what I want them to mean nothing more, nothing less".

Diplomacy

MarkT, he needed to be a bit more diplomatic in his comments about the club. He comes across as very one sided in his critism with very little positive to say.

I suspect some of this is due to not wanting to appear biased but there is also a touch of biterness to. If he could remove this most of us would have no problems at all. I do agree he was left with a bag of **** after Lethal was given his marching orders.

Murray, he didnt say it would take until 2005 to make the GF, he said it would take that long BEFORE WE MADE THE FINALS.

The little twerp can get....you know what.

Tony Shaw was just a fill in coach, and he was way too much of a friend, rather then a coach. Sure he didn't have much to work with, but still he should of been more of a coach. AS for his comments, I think he is entiled to his own opinion, I don't agree with them, and sometimes he goes way to far, sure sometimes they aren't the best club going around. But most of his comments are very harsh. Maybe he needs to get off his high horse, and realise that Collingwood are a young side, with not many players over the age of 25. Sure, it took Malthouse 3 years to get to the finals, but look at how young the players were when Malthouse took over, I reckon he has been doing a very good job, there are sometimes we I find he isn't doing so, but he is molding a very good side. Surly Tony Shaw can see that Collingwood when Malthouse took over only had probably 3 big name players at the club. I am sure there might of been more. But the point is, it takes time with young players, you can expect a grand finals apparence right away.

Tony needs to stop and think before he makes some of these comments he makes.
