Tool vs Metallica

These days, Tool by the length of two football ovals. Like most, I think pre-90's Metallica was good, but after Enter Sandman, they just completely lost the plot. Reload and St.Anger have to be some of the worst manure I have ever heard :thumbsd:

Tool are yet to make a bad album, their 4 albums are amazing artistically, thematically and musically, and a lot of other artists these days should take a leaf out of their book. That said, Metallica were in a simular situation after 4 albums, so I hope they don't go down their path, I think they have enough integrity not to.

More than a year on, I'll redo my list...

1. Aenima
2. Lateralus
3. Ride The Lightning
4. Master of Puppets
5. And Justice For All
6. Undertow
7. 10,000 Days
8. Kill 'em All
9. Death Magnetic
10. Black Album

Tool > Metallica still very easily for me, mainly just because of the tripe released between Black Album and DM.

A fairer observation would be to compare Metallica's first 4 albums with Tool's only 4 albums?

Tool by so far it's not even funny. To actually have them compared is insulting. :p

Tool > Metallica in every possible aspect.

EFA.:thumbsu:

Don't mind some of Metallica's earlier stuff but they aren't anywhere near Tool's league, especially nowadays. I don't think there are many bands today, if any, that are near Tool's league to be honest.

Aenima and Lateralus still blow my mind everytime I listen to them, amazing albums. Tool are just as awesome live too, brilliant musicians and a great front man in Maynard.

Indeed. I can't deny the influence Metallica's first four albums had on Metal, and for me the occasional play is warranted, but Tool is one of my favourite bands and for me, will win out almost everytime against Metallica.

1. Aenima
2.Undertow
3.Ride the Lightening
4.10000 Days
5.Lateralus
6.Master of Puppets
7. ...And Justice for all
8. Kill 'em all

8 Great albums, but Tools lyrics and originality really put them above Metallica for me.

Nailed it Hawks1523 . Metallica --------> Daylight 2nd & then Tool

Each to their own but Metallica for me every day of the week :thumbsu:

i don't know what people are on about with tool not making a bad album. 10,000 days was damn average at best

damn average is still a lot better than Metallica's worst, even though I don't agree with the "10000 days is damn average" quote.

I can listen to every Metallica song and love it. I cant do this with Tool. Although Tools music is more of left field.

Metallica basically perfected Heavy Metal. I have seen Both live but Metallica have been my fav band since 14 and still my fav at 23 they are just the best.

That is an absurd statement

Metallica brought Heavy Metal to the masses, but perfection? F*** no, perfection is an insatiable objective when it comes to music because there are simply too many contexts to consider.

They didn't deliberately bring metal to the masses my friend. The masses came to them. They are the biggest selling metal band ever. Think of it this way. Sure Sabbath created the bones of heavy metal but Metallica aggressive interpretation of it opened the doors for everything from black metal to speed metal.

I think Tool are groundbreaking musically but in terms of a paradigm shift they simply dont attract the same amount interest or flow on effects of which metallica has.

I was going to leave you alone but this is too much...

First point - please don't quote sales as some sort of proof of a metal bands 'perfection'.It is anathema to metal perfection in my opinion. To me,high sales and appeal to the masses almost always means dilution and appeasement.

Fates Warning's Awaken The Guardian is about as close to metal perfection as the 80's got.At the time it sold about 5 copies and they were lucky if they played to a sold out bathroom. If you haven't heard this album, get it.A band called Legend released From The Fjords in 1979,get that too.I mean then there is Slayers Show No Mercy,Iron Maiden and really countless others that in many peoples opinion had superior material to Metallica in the 80's.Metallica were definitely accessible. In metal i'm not sure that is exactly a huge compliment.I rate Ride The Lightning highly, the rest of their 80's stuff is overrated.

Black Metal roots go back further than Metallica.Venom's Black Metal was released in '82,Bathory goes back to at least '84.These and others were already playing what most people define as early black metal at the same time as Metallica was releasing Kill 'Em All.

-Your one of those metal must never sella single copy kind of guys eh. This thread is about Tool vs Metallica. In terms of sales, and thus in turn of how mnay people know or cite a band as an influence Metallica wins hands down.

-Fates who close to perfection eh? Why? Because you say so? You and 5 other people? Millions of people will state that Metallica is close to perfection. So that leaves you and your 5 buddies on Fates Warning side and me and a couple of million on the Metallica side.

-I will listen to the stuff you mentioned. But album sales doesnt dismiss a bands creative endeavour.

-No life to leather was released in 1982 also. When Metallica were just 18

"these and others were already playing what most people define as early black metal at the same time as Metallica was releasing Kill 'Em Alla"

This is untrue google the san fransico metal scene and of course no life to leather the ground breaking EP release by Metallica in 1982.

-Everyone has their opinion and I have stated mine I like Metallica much better than Tool regardless of Sales or Haircuts etc. I have seen both live and have heard both materials so I am in a good position to judge.

-nope,but i am against using sales as an indicator of how good a metal band is.Any metal head with half a clue will tell you that 90% of the best metal you will ever hear, has sold a grand total of diddly squat

-Fates Who,you say.At least listen to the material and try to deal from a position of strength if you're going to bag the band and me and my 5 mates. And yep, because i say so :)

-it doesn't prove it either

-are you saying that a 1982 metallica demo was a huge influence on black metal?

-i wasn't questioning your opinion on who is better,as you know well enough.I was replying to your statements about Metallica perfecting metal, and spawning black metal

- I am not talking about sales as a rator. I talking about the doors it opened for all metal music proving that metal music was viable commodity

- If fates were so good more than you and 5 other people would know about the. The talent scouts accidently misse these guys

-No I am not lol you spud. You tried to tell me that Black Metal was around before Metallica's Kill Em All. I called you out mentioned the No Life To Leather Ep was in 82 before any form of black metal. (You earlier stated black metal started in 1984 so dont try to change that)

-I never said Metallica spawned black metal but their influence is obviousely profound. What you seem to fail to recognise is no one played as fast as Metalica did in early 1982. This speed of course had a huge impact on the emergence of other Metal genres.

You really need to sift through all the bands that pay tribute to Metallica, and site them as an influence to fully understand the huge impact Metallica has made on heavy metal music and its other genres. The other genres spawed from the original heavy metal that's the fact :)

dont arguring dude head to blabbermouth if you want to proclaim and ultra metal attitude and ignore the merits of a band because they attract more than a few fans.:D:p

I didn't say black metal started in 1984.I used kill em all (generously) as the first metallica release that could possibly influence black metal, then pointed out some bands from the same time who are considered much more important in the history of black metal (not that metallica play any role at all in bm,no more than iron maiden or megadeth). No doubt Metallica had an influence on some musicians who later went on to play BM but that is a seperate thing.Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple can claim the same thing.
