are quite amazing
share your thoughts and favourite songs
and if anyone can play lateralus on drums with no worries you are amazing

These days: overwhelmingly overrated. I see them as the 'musician's band' for people who haven't heard many musicians bands. Last album was absolutely dull as dogshit. SO many better heavy bands out there....

Name them.

TOOL aren't now and never have been "heavy". They have a heavy element. They're diverse. If they wanted to do a pure heavy metal album, just to make even more money and prove they can, they could.

If you want HEAVY, listen to Gojira, or Ion Dissonance. Gojira are definitely the heaviest band on the planet.

TOOL are unique, i still haven't heard anything that floored me like Lateralus did the first time i listened to it. Minsk is probably the only band that are as interesting and unique sounding as tool, that i've heard anyway.

You see some of us don't see Tool as a "heavy band".
I really like 10,000 Days. Lots of quieter songs and lots of slow building that develop into a climax.
To me that is what Tool do. Some may say it's dull. Some say it's brilliant.
Lateralus was done in a similar way in many regards.
If they made every album sound like Aenima then perhaps that may get a little "dull"?

Tool have a heavy guitar sound. They are a 'Heavy' band. Nowhere did I say they were Metal. Their 'quiet' parts are part of the problem. Their quiet parts seem to go for ages and ages, and seem to be building towards something. But never really do. I read a review of 10,000 Days, which described it as '75 minutes of foreplay without sex or orgasm, ultimately leaving you frustratingly unsatisfied'. Sums them up to perfection...

Yes it's a great song that builds to this fantastic climax.

Best modern day drummer IMO. Every album he amazes me even more. To just label Tool as a "heavy band" is wrong on so many levels. They are one of the most unique and diverse sounding bands going around today.

They have you, and many others, sucked in I'm afraid....

I jumped on when Aenima came out - love Lateralus but I think 10,000 days is easily their best album.

I think they achieved artistically what they have been attempting for years.

I reckon that sums up 10,000 days quite fairly, but not their earlier stuff.

Right in Two is a good example. I always expected it to take-off somewhere else, but it never did. Bit disappointing.

Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus on the other hand...that stuff just resonates with a lot of people.

I had a listen to Lateralus the other day, hoping to find something. I found that it definitely suffered from the exact same problem: lots of 'building' never going anywhere whatsoever. Aenima is definitely a great record though....

What do you think that artistic goal is? What is it about 10,000 days which makes you think that?

Serious question.

To make the music they want to make, and still sell 600,000 copies in the US in the first week?

Aenima is 3 x Platinum
Lateralus is 2 x Platinum
10,000 days is 1 x Platinum (still early days yet, but I can't see it catching up).

I always thought that the were afforded plenty of artistic freedom by their record labels...

I love how clean it is. It's intricate, it's tough and uncompromising yet still has great melodies and fantastic arrangements/dynamics.

I'm puzzled by the "no orgasm" thing - I find it immensely satisfying although it is a lot less brutal than their previous stuff...maybe that's what people are missing?

I think that might have been their goal (although I could be completely full of crap - wouldn't be the first time) It's way riskier to not give your hardcore fans what they want but satisfy your own artistic urges.

Why don't people like it?

Best modern day drummer IMO.

pfft... There are many drummers out there that smoke Danny Carey.

My favourite tool songs are..

Aniema
46&2
Third Eye
Ticks and Leeches
The Grudge

That's a ludicrous statement.

I gotta agree with Roddy; it just doesn't 'take off' at any stage. There's just so many "okay _this_ is where it's gunna really kick in" moments, but then it dissipates into ambiance again, or worse, goes back to some overly simplistic section (like the middle of 'Jambi'). It's one big tease.

edit: The above is referring to 10000 Days. Lateralus does a better job in this regard, but still not to the extent that Aenema does.

It's my opinion. Who is heavier? I haven't heard anyone heavier in recent years. They're not heavy all the time, but their heaviest music is the heaviest i'm hearing these days. I think you'll find i'm not exactly alone on this one either.

edit:talking about Gojira,not tool.

Tool is heavy and Tool is metal.
piss poor review by the sounds of it.
Wings For Marie/10,000 days, Jambi & Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned is some of Tool's best work ever.

Definitely their sharpest sound...I think they probably hit every note just how they wanted too.

I probably don't dig the lyrical content as much as the previous albums:

Wings for Marie and 10,000 days are powerful songs, the music is awesome, but I find it hard to relate to tributes to Maynard's Mum. Still enjoy listening to it regardless.

Oh, and I hate the word Vicarious with a passion...I can't remember how many times I abused that during my English Lit years...when I saw that was the name of a song I almost choked. That's just something I'm going to have to deal with :D

Check out:

Hate Eternal
Nile
Cryptopsy

... my main point was to say that Gorjira are definately the heaviest band was ludicrous. If you said in my opinion they are the heaviest then sure, but there is a whole lot of heavy sh*t out there, and I'd say there'd be plenty that you or I haven't even heard of :p
