I got Chad Wackerman, but yeah I could have mentioned quite a few more... :)

Portnoy's about on par with Carey imo.

Ahh...so you did. Apologies.

And I respect your opinion man but I can't agree with you there. I'm a drummer myself (albeit a hacky one!), and I've seen and heard plenty of both. Have seen Tool live twice, but having seen DT a few weeks ago, and seen Portnoy in full flight (where, let's face it, it's the best place to judge), OMFG. I always thought he was an awesome player. But seeing him live, he reached another level again. He's an absolute F*CKING MONSTER!! The absolute complete Rock/Metal/Progressive package. He has everything, and then some: the mindblowing chops, the total grasp of odd time playing, the groove, unbelievable dexterity, precision and power, the musicality and, possibly most important of all, he entertains magnificently! Watching Carey is like watching your grass grow below a freshly painted fence by comparison....

Jon Theodore from The Mars Volta is an absolute freak on the drums, I know that TMV aren't a lot of peoples cup of tea but that guy can seriously play anything on the drums

Shame Jon took his bat and ball and went home.

Tool are tops and thanks to Maynard and Co. i discovered Bill Hicks.

Thankyou

Serious?
They will struggle to get a drummer to replace him.
Perhaps they should reform At the drive-in instead;)
edit: happened over a year ago:o
well the replacement is just fine

Check out:

Hate Eternal
Nile
Cryptopsy

... my main point was to say that Gorjira are definately the heaviest band was ludicrous. If you said in my opinion they are the heaviest then sure, but there is a whole lot of heavy sh*t out there, and I'd say there'd be plenty that you or I haven't even heard of :p

I have heard all of them, and have pretty much everything by Nile and Cryptopsy. I think Gojira is far heavier, we'll agree to disagree.

Fair enough, thats your opinion, but do me a favour and listen to "King of All Kings" by Hate Eternal and point me to a Gojira song that is 'far heavier' than that... I'd be interested in hearing it :)

heheh.. yeah I too am a drummer (for over 20 years and also consider myself hacky!). I prefer to listen to Portnoy for sure, but I still reckon they are about on par.

However I've never seen Mike live, but I have listened to pretty much everything he's recorded and I have the liquid drum theater and his live scenes dvd. He is a legend and one of my biggest early influences so I have the utmost respect for him.

Personally though, I think technically Danny and Mike are about even, but I think Danny is better musically and is more tasteful (subjective), and has more varied and interesting fills. Mike though, is a better showman, better at solos, is better with his feet and I prefer the music he's playing to. But I haven't seen either of them live lately so Mike may have reached that next 'level'... Anyway it's just my opinion, but I'm at least giving you an reasonably educated one :)

Interesting. I prefer Tool to DT, but I'd have to say that Carey has 'a style' (not necessarily a bad thing), whilst Portnoy can basically play anything, giving Portnoy a slight edge. But it's like arguing over which supermodel you think is hotter or something; they're obviously both awesome.

I reckon you gotta see someone live to truly judge. Portnoy is a level above Carey, IMO, having seen them both, as an overall thing. The rumours are very strong that DT are definitely coming next year, so hold out, and reserve judgement, til then!

Please let that be true!

I heard Porcupine Tree were touring this year but so far no word :( Now Gavin Harrison is one drummer I would give my left leg to see.

If DT come out here, I'll be THERE!! How good would that be!

I'm not so sure about PT, but if DT do make it down, you simply HAVE to be there. They're one of those band s that are an experience live, not just a gig/Rock show, if ya know what I mean....

yeah it happened after they released amputechture. i saw them live with the new drummer in march, and he was ****ing amazing, so i wouldn't worry too much.
they are one hell of a talented group, thats all i can say really, seen video of him and **** me

neil peart, better than danny carey? come off it. neil peart is the most overrated musician ever, next to eddie van halen.

Peart overrated? Possibly the silliest post on this board ever. Carey may play fancier stuff, but as far as contribution to and achievements in drumming and music as a whole, Carey is not fit to lick a pimple on Peart's arsecheek....

i dont think peart delivers. dont get me wrong i dont even think carey is fantastic but peart live is really sloppy.

You continue to dig a bigger hole for yourself. Delivers? He's delivered in absolute and utter spades for almost 3 and a half decades. And, exactly when have you seen him play live? I've seen them 3 times, and 'sloppy' is the last possible word you'd use to describe him.
You must be partaking of the urine, surely....

I have just coe across this thread and it looks like there are mixed opinions about 10,000 Days. I loved it, I saw them twice in January this year and some of the songs from 10,000 Days when played live were just amazing. Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days played one after the other was just phemomenal.

10,000 Days is a dark, atmospheric album and I love it.

no i cant say i have seen him live. but me being there or not doesnt make his playing change. all of his live performances ive heard alot of the time his fills carry on. like say for example the live YYZ recording is terrible, it sounds like he cant nail a fill. just my opinion, I think there are a million better players credited lower than him.
