The stars alligned in 2017 when all of our players peaked at the right time. We had a system that worked for about 18 months and it masked our list deficiencies. It has been picked apart by coaches and now it looks completely dysfunctional. Losing Rance doesn’t help and Jack + Lynch are trying to find chemistry, but the warning signs were there late last year.

Similar to the Dogs in 2017. Too many one trick ponies that worked well for 2016 until we were found out with the rule changes and key ball movers being shut down

Players still working out a plan without Rance and Houli, these aren’t average players injured, now Jack likely out for a long time.

Caddy we miss also.

The new rules have definately stopped Richmond in it’s tracks but I have faith we will turn it around, going to be tough though.

Amazing the amount of rule changes because of Richmond,Bowden,Richo KB and now the 2017 premiership side.

Let’s beat the system Tiges!

wins were far from convincing- the team unity and confidence won you majority of last 1/3 of season games

beat a VFL hawks team in final
very lucky wins against dogs and dons and cats
beat suns and saints - but well, it was suns and saints
pies fell away at 3/4 time- injuries to howe and think a few others played a part in this.

Wins masked some serious issues.

Now being exposed- bubble has burst and confidence gone.

still have one of, if not the shortest injury list in AFL
jesus going a bit early? confidence gone after 1 game? people here are so bloody reactive...its only round 2 you know. we copped a similar flogging last year in round 2 to Adelaide. in our premiership year we copped an even bigger flogging at the hands of St Kilda of all teams and we still went ok. to write a team off after one game is idiotic especially this early in the year.

and you talk about short injury lists which isnt even relevant. Its about the quality of the guys in that list and we could be without 2 of our most important players, the AA full forward and full back of last year. think those 2 well and truly make up for our so called "short" injury list.

Yep. It happens to a lot of sides that rely on system over personnel. Coaches study your game plan, take elements from it and then better it. That’s what made Clarkson so great. He always seemed to stay ahead of the eight ball.

The problem with Hardwick is that he he doesn’t appear to have a plan B and he is reactive rather than proactive. Buckley impressed me last night. He went in with something different to the Pies usual run and gun/manic pressure style and they executed it perfectly.

Richmond were never really that good. Skills were bad and their manic pressure chaos hack kick forward style relies too much on luck of the bounce and is not sustainable. Collingwood chopped them up with skilled precision short kicks last night.

Reminds me of another flag team that got exposed for skill when the pressure dropped. Maybe Alastair Clarkson was right when he said that game style was not sustainable? Explains why the hawks have never focused on pressure/contested ball.

Exactly. I've said that before we had a lot of one trick ponies in 2016, but they did those specific things very very well. Now they have to learn new tricks, or stay at the bottom of the ladder.

Top end have basically all gone backwards

Rance- exposed by cox- make him accountable and he is crap
Cotchin- love him- but too slow and not enough impact- also easily tagged
Dusty- clearly not right
Jack- looks lost playing second fiddle to Lynch- why he was in the ruck is bewildering
Edwards- does some amazing things- yet goes missing for significant patches
Lynch- kicked 3 in each game- yet hardly dominated
Lynch kicked 6 in two games and has an excuse considering that it is his 2nd competitive AFL game in ages.

Riewoldt was injured in the first quarter, but I acknowledge he is struggling to play with another key forward though. Something that I did not see coming.

Cotchin has been one of our only good star players so far. He can’t help it that he is the only midfielder doing something.

Dusty I agree with. He’s either physically not right or mentally not right. How you have 0 tackles in 2 games as a midfielder is ridiculous. Puts hardly any pressure on the opposition, gets caught holding the ball and kicks it straight to the opposition right now. He’s so far from 2017 right now that it’s not funny.

Rance I also agree with. He is amazing when playing loose, but with the way the game unfolded yesterday, I think that Rance would not have made much of a difference at all.

Edwards I also agree with. Makes things happen in an amazing fashion when he is on, but goes missing too much.

This is the first time in a while that I am actually doubting our top talent like this. People keep pointing out dropping our role players but that is shuffling deck chairs on a sinking ship when our top players are playing like they do in big games. It happens way too often that they all collectively disappear bar maybe 1 or 2.

Eagles beat them last year olaying possession football.

Pies just smashed them playing the same Hawthorn style possession football.

The sixth loweat ranked Pie was ranked higher than the Tigwrs best.

Now every team knows how to play against them. GWS will smash them next week.

Tigers look like loosing Riewaldt on top of Rance and Grimes suspended.

They need to rework their game plan in season without their two best talls.

Good luck with that.

I agree with most of what you have said. I'm predicting Port Adelaide will belt us in a couple of weeks time too, they played Melbourne the same way last week and the Dees had no answer to the spread and switch.

GWS next week might be different, they like to bang the ball in long and might struggle to replicate what Collingwood did, however they are more talented than us atm so we really do have our backs against the wall right now.

My greatest concern is Hardwick, he is a very stubborn coach and even though we have been exposed tactically I doubt he will make many changes and just back the team in. The fact that we struggle in centre clearances and get exposed against teams with a quality Ruckman (West Coast, Collingwood, Melbourne) yet he still believes we aren't a 2 Ruckman team has me worried especially with the new rules.

With Rance going down last week and not even considering a backup option (Balta) to play as a Ruck relief for Nankervis or even to use him down back has me stumped. We saw last night just how buggered Grimes was in the last quarter and it could cost him a match depending on what side of the bed Michael Christensen wakes up on.

I know its only Round 2 but if they stick their heads in the sand then its going to be a long year.

It
Oh look.. Richmond must have had a loss this week so 'it must be the umpires fault' posts have returned:$
It certainly wasnt the umps fault. Those bringing up free kick stats is like complaining abt hard matresses on the titanic.

What Collingwood did to Richmond is exactly the same as what Hawthorn did to the Swans a few years ago, basically playing keepings off, doing a lot of fast chip kicks moving forward, getting a lot of uncontested marks, starving Richmond of the ball. Longmire never really developed a counter to it, so it will be interesting to see if Hardwick can.

I knew the new rule changes would see us struggle but the team definately misses Rance,a very un Richmond like performance, looks like we will be near -200 again for free kick differential,it must be frustrating not being rewarded for a whole match but the umpires only mirror society,I mean when we had that long string of games won early last year, that’s when “the state of the game” surfaced and rules were changed to stop the Richmond juggernaut.

That is my opinion only,I know Hardwick and the playing group to take responsibility for the poor performance, our running and tackling was down,a few players just going through the motions and we have now copped some injuries to elite players, very key players.

We have had a few similar games last year like the game against Adelaide and the performance against West Coast.

Still 1 and 1,an average start but we move on.

An average night all round,a terrible crowd no doubt because of the Thursday night timeslot and the public transport hiccups, the atmosphere was down.

Collingwood deserved the win,we just have to dust ourselves off and move on,lick our Tiger paws.
In time, I think history might judge that the Tigers of 2017-18 (prior to the PF) were very un-Richmond like.

You are right in that a possession game plan is the way to go against our game style. Intrigued to see how the coaching staff deal with this. Certainly not writing them off and certainly an over reaction from some...as there was last week when the Pies lost.

Need to break even in remaining games whilst Jack is out.

As most of us rightly felt throughout the 2017 run of strong performances, they don't actually have much talent. It was just Dusty, Cotchin, Rance, Riewoldt + hard trying roleplayers.

The gameplan was genius. It got the most out of their small, pressure types. Hardwick deserves a lot of credit for bringing the best out of a team that is widely seen as one of the most pathetic culturally and historically as a club since their entry into the AFL. But at the end of the day, they won via a gimmicky gameplan, rather than having the most talented side. Similar to Collingwood 2010.

Full props to them, but now that the players are starting to believe their own hype, the effort is gone and their true talent level is showing. Still a finals contender though.

Have you always been a condescending little sh1t? That "gimmiky" game plan won us a flag. BF at times is a cesspool of stupidity and your post has given you membership.

Cheers

I'm not sure there is an easy counter. It comes down to hard running and zoning to cut off the options and force a long kick to a contest.

???

Why are you so worked up? If you read the post properly, I called it genius and said Hardwick deserves a lot of credit.

Your overreaction is uncalled for.

I mean Richmond were really poor last night and Rance injury is big.

But a few of you seem to be going very early on this talking as if they will finish bottom 4.

If we’re going to have stinkers, this is the time of the year to do it

Mate you called it genius and in the same breath called it "gimmiky". Quite possibly an over reaction but I dont think I read it incorrectly.

Tigers zone falls back to regain the ball in the defensive half then they slinshot v back at attack.

Lions won the tactical battle v Eagles round1 getting into the face of the Eagles coming out of defense and pushed the zone up so there were no easy passes to uncontested situations. Slippery conditions helped as skills dropped away.

Tigers need to hunt further up the field basically. Especially withRance gone they cant conceed easy possessions and inside 50s as they have.
