The idea to read out the draftees going down from 10 to 1, then 11 and onwards has got to be one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard, and I was just wondering if they still plan on doing this like they did in the 2009 draft?

Feel free to lock the thread after the question's answered.

The AFL seems to think everyone is hanging on the edge of the seat to find out who the number 1 pick is going to be. I'm intrigued, but if it's not my team with the first pick, then I'm not that fussed. I think most people are only interested in who their team selects.

yeah absolute joke imo.

There would be just as much drama as them doing it from 1-10, the suspense before calling out the number 1 draft pick would probably be more, because when Lachie Whitfield doesn't get called out at pick 2, you already know he is the number 1 pick.

Just the AFL fixing something else that ain't broke.

They can think that, but when a team has the first five selections in the draft last year and first three this year and it's obvious who those players will be there's really nothing exciting about it.

Yep. Anti-climax. This stunt should deservedly be banished to the football wastelands, way up in the ether, where full-strength beer, standing room, and the hip and shoulder sadly reside.

Could not agree more!

One of the most perplexing ideas to ever be established.

May as well have the whole draft behind closed doors and then read out random picks until all the picks have been read out i.e pick 45 gets read out then pick 7, then pick 78 etc etc

Exactly, the very top end of the draft is usually the most certain, so why countdown to it as though it builds suspense? Usually everyone already knows who will feature in the top 3 or so. Stupid gimmick, can it now.

With Richmond having pick 9, it means I find out our first pick quicker, but that's the only positive I can see in what is otherwise a stupid idea.

How do they actually do it, I'm assuming picks 1-10 are done before hand and then the rest of the draft is done live after that.

I don't like it, however I don't mind it this year. Daniher's name will be the first one read out :D

The teams with the first 10 picks hand in there selections to the mc draft dude (is it Demetriou?) out i'd say and they go from there

The first 10 draft picks are done behind closed doors before the draft starts. The are then read out in reverse order, and the draft goes back to live picks from 11 onwards. Terrible terrible idea.

Surely there's someone out there who'll stand up for this idea? Even at my most generous, I really can't see the case for it, but tell me this. If the AFL removed it, would there be threads complaining about what happened to the top 10?

AFL take note. No one likes your idea. Change it back.

This is just stupid IMO

1. Pick 1 is nearly always a forgone conclusion therefore no excitement
2. GWS have the first 3 picks.... Boring
3. People are hanging on who their clubs pick not who's number 1

Actually, i am interested in who the top 10 picks are but, like others have said, we already know who these a likely to be before the event even occurs.

AFL got this one arse-about. Seriously it isn't about suspense it is about intrigue. Seeing a club squirm and um and ah because either the player they planned to take was surprisingly taken before they thought or that a player they didn't think would be around is, is the most fascinating thing about a thing like this. Also for some of you draft/junior tragics it would be fun trying to call each pick.

So in the end the AFL removes what is best about watching the draft from the most exciting part of the draft so they can have a bit of American style vacuous entertainment. They should also have those crap indoor style fireworks and cheer leaders for the selected players to run through!!

The funny thing is, this idea is so bad that not even the Americans do it.

So is defiantly happening this year as well? It wouldn't surprise me if Foxtel are the ones pushing it

But does it really? They still have to select 1 through 10, then announce it in reverse.

Just adds time to finding out ALL of the picks (just less added time to pick 10 and the most added time to pick 1).

So essentially, it takes longer for you to find out your first pick. :p

True, but as I understand it, they do the top 10 before the official start time, so it still comes in quicker than it would otherwise. :p

That said, the real reason for it is so the broadcasters can be worded up in advance and have their tapes/commentary planned so they don't look like idiots (more than they usually do).
