eeewwwww have you actually seen him play?

Yeah twice. Once @ godskitchen I think it was about 2002 and then last year at Trance Energy. Thought he was pretty good both times.
I take it you are not a fan?

Haven't heard anything from him since I stopped keeping up with trance, but even in my PLUR days I always thought he was a bit cheesy. IMO of course. Haven't seen him live no, but heard some horror stories about trainwrecks and storming out on gigs.

Agreed, he will be the next big thing, Tiesto better watch his back. :p

Doin't laugh, the guy gets paid Tiesto-like money for his efforts.

I saw Judge Jules at Trance Energy last year as well, he wasn't bad. I have heard some bad stories though, but I thought he was pretty good.

As for Pauly D, he is not getting paid that amount because of talent (god help us all if he is). When Jersey Shore gets axed so will his pay checks. Hopefully

Who in the history of modern music has ever been paid for their talents? These days it's just how many screaming teenagers will steal daddy's credit card to listen.

Armin van Buuren
Markus Schulz
John O'Callaghan
Roger Shah
Dash Berlin
Steve Angello
Cosmic Gate (Nic Chagall & Stefan Bossems)
Andy Duguid
Ferry Corsten
George Acosta

Im going to assume that your refering to pop music stars who have other people write music for them, in which case you are correct. It's not about talent but about exposure and gimmicks. Pauly D is a gimmick.
If your refering to the music industry as a whole then i'll have to ask you to explain.

All I'm saying is, you don't make money with musical talent, you make it by being marketable.

I listened to SHM's Until One today - the track selection is alright - good to see some of their old solo and twofold projects on there, but geez it's mixed poorly - the Clocks mix is the worst; it's so clearly a loop of the first piano bit where the strings only start on the 3rd or 4th note, so the strings just disappear every time they start the loop again - amateur stuff. And the transitions are worse than a John Course Annual disc.

Not perfect, I agree. But worse the John Course? Thats a bit harsh :D. The mixing might not be smooth, but at least there is some flow, not just a quick switch.

I see where your coming from with your original point. Dave Guetta has made a mint since selling out. But there is still plenty of talent out there, although a lot of it is wasted.

There is plenty of talent out there for sure - it's just that money is like a bell curve - it only seems to go to the people in the middle who have some talent but no artistic integrity.

And yeah, maybe that was a bit harsh.

That sums up your point nicely. I guess the question is, does Pauly D have artistic integrity? :D

Judge Jules was excellent that day - As were Richard Durand and Sean Tyas.

As for Top 10 - Can't be bothered, but Armin Van Buuren is so far ahead of the #2 it's scary, at the moment.

I just can't stand sifting through the mountains of shit to find deent trance these days. And Armins obsession with cheese epic vocal tracks turns me right off. Can you tell me what tracks are doing it for you at the moment?

I actually don't listen to enough trance to give you a decent answer - Armin's State of Trance podcasts suit me. I listen to hardstyles as well, and Showtek is killing it in that area lately.

Im not sure of your preferences but my favourite Van Buuren tracks from the last few years are as follows:

Armin van Buuren - Yet another day
System X vs. Armin Van Buuren - Exhale
Armin van Buuren - Serenity
Armin van Buuren - Burned With Desire (Rising Star Remix)
Armin van Buuren & DJ Shah - Going Wrong (Alex MORPH B2B Woody van EydenRemix)
Armin van Buuren - Never Say Never (Myon and Shane54 mix)
Armin van Buuren - Sail
Armin van Buuren - Shivers (Alex MORPH Dub Mix)

and some of his remixes:

Solid Sessions - Janeiro (Armin van Buuren Remix)
Iio - Rapture (Armin van Buuren Remix)
Solar Stone - Seven Cities (Armin van Buuren Remix)
The Killers - Human (Armin van Buuren Remix)

Dont listen to him as much as I used to, and im in the thinking his best stuff is now behind him (dont chew my head off if you like him, it's just a personal opinion). Mirage isn't a bad album but I from what you have said Doris the bulk of the album probably isnt for you. Some of the songs I suggested are quite possibly way off the mark compared to what your in too, but they are my favourite AVB tracks from the last couple of years.

Yeah you gotta love State Of Trance, I also podcast Tiesto's Club Life a fair bit which is good, usually has some great electro remixes on there. I remember this sick remix of Killer In Me by Smashing Pumpkins (have no idea who did it, but if you find out let me know).

Haven't heard much of Showtek but I used to like Dana van Dreven back in the day.

Without being a big trance fan, I agree on the vocals part. I've been to Sasha sets and I didn't mind him at all - just played good trance. Don't mind Above and Beyond either.

I remember God's Kitchen 2006 (back before it turned 100% shit) - Above and Beyond, then Eddie Halliwell, then Cosmic Gate.

Epic.

All three acts worth checking out for anyone looking for suggestions.

Too much trance in this thread, the only relevant trance artist is John 00 Fleming. Most of the rest cater to the masses and have zero credibilty in the electronic world.

Top 10:

Laurent Garnier - His live show is that far ahead of the rest its not funny.
Marcel Dettman - The talisman for the best club in the world - Berghain
Surgeon - Techno pioneer and simply does not miss
James Holden - His unique and ambitious style somehow just works, you never know whats coming
Paul Kalkbrenner - Has recently had a movie about him made called berling calling, a demi god in Germany
Juan Atkins - Invented techno, nuff said
Henrik Schwarz - King of deep house
John Digweed- The progressive house tastemaker, if he is playing your track everyone else will be as well.
Carl Craig - 25 years in the game, countless releases and has always kept relevant. A production juggernaut.
Apparat - Versatile and creative, never misses.

Thanks Mark, I didn't mean Armin tracks, just quality trancers at the moment. And you're right, I've heard most of those Armin tracks and his own productions are really not to my tastes..

Sasha isn't known for playing trance, but I have heard he was playing a little bit not long ago. I'm sure it would have been progressive and quality though.

Yeah this.

Yeah I had a feeling that those tracks might not be for you.

Sasha was one of the first DJ's I really liked, along with oldschool Armin, Above and Beyond and Marcus Schulz. They started out more progressive but moved into Trance a while back, I sorta just followed.

I'm getting the feeling that this thread has alot of progessive house and electro fans, so why dont we move in that direction.

My favourite DJ's in this area:

John Digweed
Nick Warren
James Holden
Robert Miles
Dave Seaman
Lee Burridge
Derrick May
Juan Atkins
Daft Punk
Richie Hawtin

And thanks to this thread I am really getting into Hernan.
