So many great moments to list. Anyway, for what it's worth:
1. 2007 Grand Final - Geelong v Port Adelaide
This will never be beaten. Breaking a 44-year drought, utterly destroying a very good and in-form team in Port. People forget it's the only huge Grand Final win that was 1st v 2nd (the previous record - Hawthorn over Melbourne by 96 points in 1988, was 1st vs 5th). To play that sublimely, that purely on the biggest stage of all under the most pressure, was just incredible. People also forget that most of the first quarter was pretty even, it was only late in the quarter we got on top. I vividly recall the moment when Rooke kicked the 2nd goal of the second quarter, I felt a chill when it dawned on me that not only were we able to win the premiership, we almost certainly were going to.
Plus I didn't have to pay to get in. Made it even better.
2. 2011 Grand Final - Geelong v Collingwood
Fantastic, quality win against a top opponent. The best way to win I think - neck and neck for three quarters, then pull away in the last. Hawkins' last quarter left us all awestruck. Good time to produce. Plus it was the first Grand Final with my baby daughter (who duly squawked all through the telecast) so that was pretty cool as well.
3. 2009 Grand Final - Geelong v St.Kilda
Talk about a gritty win. A very tough opponent who won 19 straight during that season. Coming from behind after trailing at every change. Reversing the mid-season loss to them. I'll never forget the atmosphere at the Punt Road end in the closing stages, the mayhem after Chapman's goal, the near mayhem after Rooke's soccered point, and the absolute bedlam once the siren went (apologies to the lady whose son I threw in the air).
4. 2007 Qualifying Final v North Melbourne
This game gets forgotten too often. A brutal, clinical destruction of a pretty useful team, made the more joyous by Laidley's idiotic stirring before the game that once the finals started everyone was equal. I also thoroughly enjoyed Glenn Archer being brutally humiliated by Chappy, then even outmarked by Stokes. Leigh Brown's comedy moments in the first quarter still bring laughter. A great day. (Also Part 1 of the only time in history a side was won by 100+ points twice in one finals series)
5. 1989 Preliminary Final v Essendon
The best individual performance I've ever seen by any player. To turn around a 76-point whipping we received a fortnight earlier was amazing, but to see Ablett exhibit the full range of party tricks in the best conditions possible was an experience I'll never forget. People need to understand it wasn't just he was starring, he was doing things no one had ever seen before. And doing it every week.
6. 2009 Qualifying Final v Footscray
This is mainly due to the reaction of the Dogs players after they beat Collingwood (I think) in the final home and away game, and due to percentage were told they were avoiding St.Kilda and facing us. They were celebrating like they'd already won the flag, perhaps as they'd beaten us in Round 21 they thought they had their measure. When it was 7 goals to 1 early in the second quarter our way the expression on Dogs' fans faces was priceless. Enright, Scarlett and Milburn stopped everything and we led from start to finish. Another great day.
7. Round 19, 2012 v Hawthorn
Had to include this. The best evidence yet on how you must be patient with young players was how Hawkins stepped up in late 2011 to the present, and certainly this game against Hawthorn. Not for the first time, he obliterated Schoenmakers and people seriously underestimate how hard it is to kick a 60m drop punt after the siren. Fatigue, pressure, you name it, he conquered them all. The wonderful, glorious slow-motion replay of the Hawthorn neanderthal in the crowd throwing his cap or scarf to the ground in disgust makes it even more beautiful.
8. Round 19, 2011 v Melbourne
Some fans for an unknown reason don't like one-sided slaughters; I do. Unbelievable game from start to finish, and the killer instinct to keep the pressure on way after they needed to was a great sign of what was to come in the finals. Just fell short but still an amazing day. Plus they followed up with a 150-point win over Gold Coast the next week.
9. Round 7, 1989 v St.Kilda
This was the week after we lost to Hawthorn after leading by 56 points early in the second quarter. At half time it was Geelong 16.6 to St.Kilda 10.6 (or thereabouts). We were all wondering if they'd collapse again or keep going. At three quarter time Geelong were 27.12 (then a record). Ended up winning by 119 points with Gavin Exell following up his 9 against Hawthorn with 8 goals. It set up an awesome 6 weeks where the question wasn't if we'd win it was how and by how much. Amazing free-flowing football.
10. First Semi-Final 1989 v Melbourne
Had to finish with another Ablett masterclass. 7 goals 7 against Melbourne who had beaten us once that year, and a team of greater frontrunners you would never find. Close for three quarters, then a final quarter of 10.10 (!!!) saw us ease to a 63-point thrashing. Shane Hamilton played an amazing game as well.
