You're not comparing like for like though. The guys back then didn't have to put up with constant rule changes / meddling and interference from the AFL and higher level of scrutinisation by the media. Don't forget back then, lucky to only have 1 or 2 matches a weekend broadcast and there was about 4 cameras and not 24 and no live streaming and analysis to the nth degree.

I would bet that if the above mentioned guys were actually umpiring now people would be howling them down. Likewise, if the current crop were umpiring back in the 80's they would probably be on your favourite list.

I don't think so. This present crop is just no good.
