AFL Club
Melbourne
I got bored (which I'm quite good at) so I decided to list my first 10 picked Melbourne players as if I were the coach. This task obviously assumes all players are injury free and takes into account their role in the team ect. Feel free to scrap it if you think it doesn't offer anything haha
My first picked players in order are (again assuming a fully fit list):
1. Mitch Clark
2. Nathan Jones
3. James Frawley
4. Mark Jamar
5. Liam Jurrah
6. Jack Grimes
7. Jack Watts
8. Jeremy Howe
9. Jack Trengove
10. Clint Bartram

Mine is not just on form this year, just how i rate them generally
1 Frawley
2 Jones
3 Clark
4 Watts
5 Rivers
6 Jamar
7 Grimes
8 Trengove
9 Mckenzie
10 Jurrah

Based on performances from this year:

1) Jones - need a good, consistent mid obviously.
2) Clark - and a power forward
3) Grimes - courageous and attacking
4) Frawley - holds us together
5) Jamar - gotta have a ruckman, first choice if fit
6) Rivers - solid down back
7) Watts - silky skills
8) Howe - mid/goalkicker with leap
9) Blease - mid/goalkicker with pace
10) Trengove - always tries 100%, hasn't had a stand out year but I think it's been better than people tend to believe (just gotta fix that kicking for goal!)

Notable omissions:
Martin - would probably be no. 11
Jurrah - it's been so long i've forgotten what it's like to have him.
Sylvia - if by fully fit we can count 'mentally fit' then I'd have him in there. I think it's all in the scone with regards to Col's up and down form.
Moloney - see Sylvia

Based on what they've done this year, not in the past nor what their potential is...

1. Jones
2. Clark
3. Howe
4. McKenzie
5. Grimes
6. Watts
7. McDonald
8. Frawley
9. Nicholson
10. Sellar

Honestly i struggled with that. Too many blokes who have gone missing or just not had an IMPACT on games. Trengove included (i've defended him long enough).

A list based on past performances or future potential would be completely different, but we all know that MFC players rarely, if ever, meet their potential...

1. Clark
2. Jones
3. Rivers
4. Frawley
5. Howe
6. Watts
7. Jamar
8. Grimes
9. Sylvia
10. Trengove

Think the disappointing part of doing a list like this in our situation is that u don't feel really bad bout leaving people out, instead found myself wondering who deserved the last couple of spots..

Jurrah is straight back in there when he comes back

1 - Nathan Jones
2 - Jack Grimes
3 - Mitch Clark
4 - Jack Watts
5 - James Frawley
6 - Jack Trengove
7 - Jeremy Howe
8 - Mark Jamar
9 - Liam Jurrah
10 - Jared Rivers

Hm. Blease, McKenzie, Martin, Tapscott, Nicholson

My list is based on first picked Round 1 next year from our current crop of players:

1. Frawley - not his finest year, but still our most important player
2. Clark - can't replace quality talls. Especially up forward. Super important
3. Grimes - our leader who has flown under the radar this year. Becoming a great midfielder
4. Watts - his class down back and delivery into the F50 has been missed in recent weeks
5. Jones - fast becoming an A Grader. His gut running and grunt work is crucial
6. Strauss - his delivery from the backline is critical to future team success
7. Jamar - with a better midfield, his hit outs will be more pronounced
8. McKenzie - a quality tagger is a must in every good side
9. T McDonald - frees up Garland or Rivers to go forward. His development is crucial
10. Blease - our side needs pace and goal kickers, he has both qualities

Jurrah is an interesting one. If he was guaranteed to be on our list next year, he'd probably slot in the top 10 somewhere. Has that X Factor all good teams have. I really contemplated putting Sylvia at number 1 as well! On his day he is our best player. But he's so frustrating I couldn't put him in our top 10. Really should be top 3 at least. It's a shame him and Beamer couldn't lift this year.

1) Jones
2) Clark
3) Grimes
4) Frawley
5) Jamar
6) Trengove
7) Bartram
8) Watts
9) Howe
10) McKenzie

...with Nicholson very close to breaking into the 10. For mine I believe he can be a very good half back flanker.
surely bartram is a joke ?

surely bartram is a joke ?

The thing about Bartram is that he gives an effort. Also, he must be a good leader given his spot in the leadership group, and he's alright at tagging.

Yes, I was a knocker for a little while for his kicking. But knowing that half the team hardly gave a rat's arse from rounds 1-11 you have to appreciate the fact that he gives an effort week in, week out. And that's all you ask of a football player.

If he has to retire due to his buggered knee - which is a great shame - we have the perfect replacement in Strauss. And I certainly think he's becoming one of our better players as well, and again, it comes down to effort. He has taken his opportunity with both hands and has played good football and it is a bonus that he uses the ball so well.

The top 4 are quality (Frawley, Clark, Jones & Jamar). If you throw one quality genuine A grade midfielder and you could build the team around them.

For instance you would have two gun bookends in Frawley & Clark. You build you forward line and back line around them. Then Jamar as the top line ruck men feeding Jones (inside grunt mid) and an A grade outside mid. All of a sudden the team looks totally different.
