Thanks for the smokey's listing at 82 - I'm going to see what I can find out about them. Call me a romantic but there is a moneyball attraction with these types of player that gets me going. While it is great having 2 picks in the top 20 this year, it is a bit unfortunate that we don't have just one more in the 30's or 40's where you could go for something a little more left field and beat the other cluey drafters to the prize.

I've had another look and I can see what you're saying with his hands - quick and great vision, seems to find someone the moment he looks up. Re: the Cripps comparisons (which always seem to crop up when talking about his deficiencies), he doesn't seem to have the tackling or ball-winning ability Cripps does. Did Cripps show this in his junior years?

Constable isn't as good at the clearances as Cripps to the naked eye and his numbers reflect that as well. That's always been my problem with him and why I've never seen him as elite looking into the future. He's not as strong, doesn't do as much bollocking work and I don't think he reads it as well as Cripps off the ruckman's hands. When watching him live, I found him hard notice unless I was looking out for him, where as I never had that problem with Cripps. In regards to the numbers, Constable has had a couple games with over 10 clearances from what I can tell, but hasn't been able to do it as consistently as Cripps did it. Cripps also had bigger clearance games, he had a couple 15+ in games.

I'm being pretty negative here, but I think he will still be a pretty good player. Just not as good as Cripps as a mid. He's quicker then Cripps ever was, a better kick and more versatile though. What I like about him is he's shown he can play back, forward, midfield already to a pretty good level. He could easily fit into a Matthew Boyd style half back role for us for instance. I'd prefer others though.

Nailed the 40's picks lately with Caleb and YLY. Time to get a pick 80's bargain

I never agreed with the Cripps comparison. I do see Constable as an inside mid first, however Cripps is a pretty one-dimensional player - Constable is not. Don't get me wrong, I think Cripps is remarkably talented as a clearance specialist, but he doesn't offer all that much outside of the midfield. Constable has shown genuine ability as a defensive general and medium marking forward.

To get keen on him at pick 9 I want him to excel in some area, and I was hoping to hear that might be clearances due to the comparisons to Cripps and his handball skills. To my eye also he hasn't got those clearance skills. Stops me getting on board I reckon. A big body around the contest doesn't mean as much if they aren't winning the ball or laying heavy tackles. Agree, he'll be good, but I still prefer others at 9. Still, I might now have him above Higgins and Clark, probably Allen too.

I just don't like the jack-of-all-trades thing. Flexibility is great, obviously, but I'd like whoever we pick that early to be elite somewhere. But maybe I'm asking too much in a soft draft.

At this point I'd be fine with drafting him but he doesn't excite me.

I think he has potential to be an elite inside mid. I think he has that, as well as versatility. In my opinion, it is a mistake to classify Constable as a jack-of-all-trades. His work as a midfielder has far outshined that description this year, and he already has a capable defensive game.

Genuine question, what does he do elite as an inside mid? Seems we've covered he's not elite at ball winning, or tackling, or reading taps. Definitely not elite at carrying from a contest. Elite hands aren't enough IMO. Or do you expect him to improve in some of these areas? I suppose that's what you mean by potential yeah?

I think his reading of taps is much stronger than many here suggest and his tackling technique is very strong. His movement in the contest is excellent and allows him to win good numbers of contested ball.

I said potential to be an elite inside mid. Inside mids can develop massively in an AFL environment. It's a position that really requires learning and development regarding positioning at the contest and game awareness. Constable's inside game, I am certain, will show marked improvements for being in an AFL system.

OK, fair answer. Mix of current underrating and expected improvement.

I have him above those guys for what it's worth. But yeah, I've never got the top 10 pick vibe out of him. He doesn't possess enough tricks to ever be an elite player for mine.

Again, tiny sample size, but this is my feel on him too. Operates almost solely on the inside with little spread or drive out of a contest and only good-great clearance ability. The former will limit him to being primarily a handballing, exceedingly low metres gained type, while the latter will stop him from racking up the clearances consistently.

The likes of Cripps and Oliver are less athletic and skilful but (a) possess the ability to break through congestion; and (b) have the capability to absolutely dominate through sheer weight of numbers on the inside. Think that's what separates the elite inside mids from the very good types.

Think he'll be a good player. Has a lot of great attributes. Don't think he'll be elite though, nor do I see a fit for us.

I have a strong feeling he's the player Pann told Wizard about, so unless we get a slider I think we might have to get used to the idea. Which is why I'm trying to get those who like him to convince me.

Hey if we get him I'll have a brief moment of disappointment followed by excitement and celebration. I'm just shooting the breeze here - end of the day, I know very little. He's not somebody that I would personally opt for but that's probably a good sign.

Same - ever since complaining about Bont over Aish and then a year later sooking about no talls in 2014 I've learned my lesson about caring too much about what players I wanted.

This bit here I wanted to highlight because you've explained it better than I could and it's what I meant by not really noticing him in games. Those ones you mentioned were able to break through the congestion, where as Constable is very much a dish it off to someone else and let them deal with it type. Doesn't really possess a sidestep to get out of trouble either.

Based on hoping for one of the clear best, then focusing on needs:

1. LDU
2. Stephenson
3. Rayner
4. Cerra
5. Coffield
6. Brayshaw
7. Dow
8. Clark (if none of the clear top guys slide, I'm very happy with Clark at 9)
9. Murphy
10. Richards (classic groupthink, you guys have absolutely sold me on him as the guy I want at 16)
11. O'Brien (at 16, a Gaff/Whitfield type player would be very nice)
12. Fogarty (everyone after this point I'm pretty meh about)
13. Bonar
14. Higgins
15. Balta
16. Constable

Hoping as many of Fogarty, Bonar, Brander and Naughton slip into the top 8/15 as possible.

Oliver is one of the most athletic inside mids in the comp right now. I know that Combine results are far from the whole story, but a 2.97s 20m sprint and an 8.11s agility test time aren't achievable without a very good athletic base. I know that's not really relevant to the Constable discussion, but I just wanted to point that out.

I didn't realise he tested that well, so thanks for the figures - very interesting. Oliver is a bit deceiving to the eye because of his build.

How I view some of the Metro midfielders

Coffield - beautiful kick, okay decision maker
Cerra - beautiful decision maker, okay kick
Constable - okay skills, okay decision maker
