Adelaide 0 -
Brisbane 5 - Lappin, Johnstone, Power, Brennan, Leuenberger
Carlton 5 - Judd, Walker, Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer
C'Wood 5 - Rocca, Fraser, Didak, Thomas, Pendlebury
Essendon 2 - Lucas, Gumbleton
Fremantle 3 - Headland, Haselby, Pavlich
Geelong 1 - Ottens
Hawthorn 5 - Croad, Hodge, Roughead, Ellis, Franklin
Melbourne 4 - White, Sylvia, McLean, Morton
N Melbourne 4 - Grant, Brown, Wells, Hansen
P Adelaide 1 - Boak
Richmond 4 - Polak, Deledio, Tambling, Cotchin
St Kilda 7 - Gardiner, Fiora, Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Ball, Clarke, Goddard
Sydney 2 - Fosdike, McViegh
West Coast 2 - Kennedy, Masten
W Bulldogs 5 - McDougall, Cooney, Ray, Griffen, Grant

Its interesting as last years grand finalists, geelong and port, both only have 1 top 5 pick on their list. Also, has Adelaide done good enough to never have qualified for a top 5 pick?

Any other thoughts? (or mistakes)

I have noticed that Geelong only had Ottens as a top pick and our highest draft pick in the last decade IIRC is Bartel at 8.

I think what this shows is that top 5 picks can produce very good players more often than in later rounds and they are very valuable but coinciding with these picks must be good football scouts and evaluators of young talent. AFL is a team game and this is another piece of evidence showing just how much of a team game it is.

from memory we traded on pick 2 for Carey (great deal ) but otherwise no.

Interesting the 6 interstate clubs have only 13 top 5 picks in total, and the ten Victorian clubs have 43, or twice the rate per club. Does this show the consistency of performance coming from teams outside Melbourne?

Geelong haven't had any top 5 picks.

Interesting list, shows how good Adelaide have been over the years to remain strong despite no top 5 picks. Kudos to them.

What it doesn't show is the father/son picks.
Gee I wonder who has done best out of that...

Still doesn't tell the full-story. You'd have to move Masten to Carlton if you want to highlight how many top 5 picks have been allocated to each club.

So do I allocate Wells to North, Adelaide, Richmond or Carlton?

Essendon should really be down as 3 and the Saints as 8 as Matthew Lloyd and Steven King were effectively top five picks. Although they went in the 95 pre-season draft rather than the draft proper, they were compensatory picks of players who were too young to be in any previous draft.

A few father son picks going around would have been top 5.
