True that- Geelong have got at least two (Ablett and Hawkins) who unquestionably would have gone tap 5.
Essendon should really be down as 3 and the Saints as 8 as Matthew Lloyd and Steven King were effectively top five picks. Although they went in the 95 pre-season draft rather than the draft proper, they were compensatory picks of players who were too young to be in any previous draft.

Interesting list, shows how good Adelaide have been over the years to remain strong despite no top 5 picks. Kudos to them.
What it doesn't show is the father/son picks.
Gee I wonder who has done best out of that...
Ablett - Hell no! Speculation varies from about #15-30. This was not a Hawkinsesque acquisition it had more sentimental buzz than any inevitable superstar factor. GAJ would certainly not have gone top 5 in 2001.

Possibly true as all "new" sides do get concessions. WCE and Adelaide got even more than Freo and Port.and maybe the odd zone pick cough Tredrea cough Lade
Well we finished fifth last in 2004. But it happened to be in a year where three teams - Richmond, Hawthorn, Bulldogs - double dipped. Also, has Adelaide done good enough to never have qualified for a top 5 pick?
People see that he's become a superstar and just assume he would have been a lock for the top 5 in his draft.
"My situation was also a little different because I was no guarantee to be drafted when I committed to the Lions. For Marc Murphy there would have been more pressure because everyone probably knew he was the projected No.1 pick."
Of course they won't AngelEyes.
Collingwood never get the finger pointed at them and they've gone to the well as much as anyone. Bulldogs too.
Everyone except the Saints of course who stand alone at the top of the table.
thought i saw grants name under the bulldogs list for top 5 picks. chris grant was taken at over 100 in the draft. bout 105 i think.
1994 draft, not 1993....Essendon must have got pick 4 in 1994(Lucas) on a trade because we won the flag the year before (the time is right to reflect on past glories) and Lloyds pick was definitely a trade.
Geelong have well and truly offset the lack of high picks using the father son rule.
no point in trying to guess when Scarlett and Ablett would have gone without the father son. My guess is High both were very good juniors especially ablett who is my age.
