He spent a lot of time on my unluckies list.
Will miss out on the top 50.
But would have him in the next 20 players.
His big games are huge but he has quiet patches that hurt his overall position.
If you are looking at kids in their first two years of playing I have:
Gaff, Greene, Talia and Darling ahead of him.
On his day he is better than all of them but these four have been more consistent.
I would be surprised if he wasn't in the top 50 next year.
If he ever gets home-sick you let us know.

To be honest I think Birchall has been overrated this year. Yes he has had a good year but so has most of our backline. Gibson, Shoenmakers, Guerra, Suckling, Stratton and Birchall have worked well as a team so I'm not sure why everybody rates Birchall so highly and not the others. Why is Birchall a lock for AA and the others aren't mentioned?

I would not have him in my top 20.

A bit harsh. Suckling has been up and down. Guerra is unlucky to be injured, but indispline with suspensions and etc. Stratton hasn't played the whole season. Gibson and Shuey just haven't been in the top 3 key defenders of this year. Birchall in top 20 is a little high, but deserves a top 50 spot for sure.

Well I'm not saying that they should all be in the top 50, rather that our defence is a lot more even than people seems to think. Perhaps only Birchall should make the top 50 but the others could sit in the 50-100 range. It's not a one-man band.

And I would agree, to an extent.
Certainly Gibson and Suckling are in the 50-100.
I really like Stratton but I feel he's like Mackenzie in that you don't know where to rate him exactly.
Probably wouldn't have Guerra in that range. For mind, he's more like the player who always does his job but isn't glamorous enough to catch attention.
Schoenmakers has come ahead in leaps and bounds in the 2nd half of the year particularly.
Still is some way out of the 50 though.

Not bad, however changes I would make would be Swan in for Selwood.

You've had him in there pretty much all year for some strange reason. The only other bloke in the entire competition who has had more goals kicked on him than Rance plays for GWS!
Rance isn't terrible, but he shouldn't be anywhere near this list.
On the whole, you've done a wonderful job, but he and Tuck have been weirdly high up your rankings all year.

So revised top 10:
1. Ablett
2. Cotchin
3. Watson
4. Beams
5. Kennedy
6. Dangerfield
7. Pendlebury
8. Deledio
9. Thompson
10. Swan

I am satisfied with both advised changes.
Cotchin I feel has been in the top 2 because of his 2nd half of the year.
However, with the amount of people voicing their Cotchin dislike on other threads I was hesitant to put him 2nd.
Swan sits well in the top 10. Could probably be one or two spots higher but has missed a bit of football so 10th seems appropriate.
