Top 7: Backs

Bowden has scored fairly well since he's returned. Hasn't pulled out any huge scores yet, so I think he has probably slipped under the radar of alot of coaches.

I might look to bring him in this week.

Also agree with Dogs re: McPhee. Had a good score this week, and if he backs it up with another 85 then I will be tempted.

The only thing with McPhee was he stilled played forward despite being named back.

With Lucas there though he played more of a hit up role similar to Murphy and only gets the third best defender now so there still may be some upside.

The backs are the strongest part of my team. I personally think this year due to the lack of cheap, good value backs you had to either spend some cash or pick very wisely.

Currently the backs in my team are:

Chad Cornes
Grant Birchall
Graham Johncock
Jake King
Peter Burgoyne
Heath Shaw
Sam Fisher

All of these guys are capable of getting 100's on their day.

I personally think you're better off going with the 70-80 pts per week players in the backline and spending the other money on premiums up forward and in the midfield. The backmen just aren't getting the points this season, there are no real standouts to average 90-95+ for the year, and many of them are very inconsistent as seen with Birchall, Cornes, Mackie etc this week. I'm really struggling in the backline this year.

One of the most consistant in the comp. Just got tagged thats all. Won't happen again.

My backline has been woeful all year yet all of my backs you would consider to be in the top section of Backman.

Shaw
Burgoyne
Cornes
Birchall
Mackie
Mcleod
Goddard

I only got 453(Avg 63) out of these 7. On paper thats a good back 7 yet they give me nothing week in week out.

Thats rough. Apart from McLeod I would say you have 6 of the top 7 backmen in your lineup. That's a good effort.
Birch had an off week. Nothing to suggest he won't continue to average mid 80s.
Cornes has been a little proppy the last couple of weeks. We could put this down to his finger injury or possible close tags but either way it is very unusual for him.
Burgoyne has been sub-par for a fair few weeks. I think you can expect a few 70s from him though. Its part and parcel of the burgoyne package.
Goddard is almost as consistent as you'll get. Nothing to complain about there.
Shaw is up and down like a yo-yo, but still manages to average above 90.
Mackie had his second worst week of the season, scoring 68. Nothing to worry about there.

Add Sam Fisher and Kennelly IMO.

Malceski..?

Chris Newman said hello

Its easy to throw out random names, but if you could put forward a reason why you think those players will finish in the top 7 backs (on averages) then please share it with us.

Fisher finished top 10 backs last year, and will probably do the same in 08. Gets enough 90s and 100s but too many sub-70s to be an elite defender. His stats this season look quite similar to 07.
Malceski has had one good game so far. Last season he scored over 130 on three occasions (a fair effort) but still only managed an average of 87 for the season. Let's wait another round or two to see if he's the real deal this season.

Newman is one that you could mount a case for, and I must admit I overlooked him before. Scores of 58, 114, 71, 84, 79, 38, 96, 84, 78, 104 and 100 this season to date at an average of 82.4. Take out the 38 and he is averaging 86.8 - which would place him in the top 5 backs. Could definitely make the top 7 defenders list this season.

At the start of the year I try to predict who will be the best players in each position, and then work to get all of them in my side throughout the year.

Before the season started, my 7 backs were... (in no particular order)

Shaw, Milburn, Waters, McLeod, P.Burgoyne, C.Cornes, Bowden.

Obviously in hindsight Waters has been a bit of a disappointment, as has McLeod over the past 4-5 weeks, but the others have been doing fine of late.

That's quite an expensive backline to start with. But I like your thinking. The more you start with, the less you have to trade in and the more points you'll get. Waters and McLeod haven't been top 7 material so far, but nonetheless that is a solid backline to have.

Ahhh I knew I should have explained it more.

What I was saying was, at the start of the year, before I picked my dreamteam, I drew up a team that I wanted to try and achieve by the end of the year, and throughout the year by using cash cows, I would slowly bring in the 'dream' players.

So those 7 backs were the ones that I wanted to get at the start of the year (and still do), I have 6 of them at the moment.

Hope this makes sense.

This year has been a strange experience with regards to the backs, I know most people have talked about this constantly. Injuries and tagging have played a major role with regards to the top backs.

Cornes, Drummond, Mackie, Malceski, Kennelly, Symes, Goddard - Injuries
Shaw, McLoed, Birchall - Tags
Bowden - Bad form

So it has been rather hard to get a solid dream team backline.

My best 7 backs without injury would be

Shaw, Cornes, Drummond, Goddard, Newman, Mackie, Milburn.
I would swap Drummond with Birchall just due to injuries.

most of the top backs play as running backmen (except cornes)......therefore it is easy for them to get low scores...this is because some teams may choose to put a defensiive forward.....weve seen this happen a lot this season...for example with heath shaw and bairchall last week....

if u want consistency you would go with someone like newman who plays mostly in the midfield......most midfielders can survive a tag because they can use the whole ground to get their possessions

Im going to pick up one of Mackie or Fisher either this week or next week depending if Bradshaw plays. Obviously Mackie is the better choice but is he worth 30k more then Fisher?

I expect Mackie to average around 5 points per week more than Fisher, so that 30k is worth it in my view. If you expect Mackie to average less, or fisher to average more then your decision would be different.

It is interesting how this year the top 7 backs is quite controversial. Correct me if I am wrong but in the past couple of years it has been more obvious who the top 7 backs would be at this stage of the year whereas this year it could go anywhere still!
