Surprised Street Fighting Years isn't there, but I may be biased.

This Is Your Land still has that visceral impact on me after all these years.
yeah SFY would have been next cab off the rank. I love This Is Your Land. I remember seeing Lou Reed join the Minds on stage for that song in ‘89 in Barcelona.

That first Dire Straits album is one of those seminal late 70s, late night albums. Great memories listening to that with people who were way older than me doing stuff that way older people did.

Wow, no love for Document...

Wow, no love for Document...
Document was very close, it's like the turning point between early REM, which I quite like, and mid-period REM, which I love.

Early to mid, to me at least, means less jingle-jangle arpeggios on guitar, and vocals that are clear and upfront in the mix.

For me it's their "peak". Feels like they got it right between the grindy early stuff and the almost poppy later. I very much enjoy the mid-period stuff, but really like the energy from Document. Full disclosure, it's also the first tour I saw them live and it stuck. By far their best of some very good (and one really poor) performances I later saw in the 90s.

Anyone who doesn't have WIGGLY, WIGGLY CHRISTMAS (1996) in their top 5 cannot be considered a true fan.

;)
Was played to death at my place. The offspring put it on at Christmas now just to see me getting triggered.

That’s true, was very bored cooking spaghetti boll last night, googled the wiggles and couldn’t believe how many albums they have realised, just made up a list. They sure are a money spinner.

i personally find it pretty hard to pick five albums from most of my faves. most of my top artists have 2-3 albums at their peak and the rest tend to range from bad to great (obviously a generalisation). but i prefer to move onto another "seminal" album (whatever that means lol) from another artist than explore albums that aren't as highly regarded. basically genre-hopping rather than discography diving.

so with that logic i think a top three for some of my recent jams makes more sense

Fishmans
Long Season
Something in the Air
Uchu Nippon Setagaya

Kate Bush
Hounds of Love
The Kick Inside
Never For Ever

Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works #2
Selected Ambient Works #1
Come to Daddy

Pavement
Crooked Rain
Slanted + Enchanted
Wowee Zowee

Deafheaven
Sunbather
Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
i don't really like their other albums haha

I would love to reply to this thread, but I have not listened to an album in about 30 years.

So I guess you could say my favourite artist is Hush.

Favourite songs

Hush
Sounds of Silence
Silence is Golden
Enjoy the Silence
Turn That s**t Off!

Very late to this thread and could spend a long time debating the REM and Springsteen orders above…..but I thought I’d add a little something different:

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD).

1. Architecture & Morality
2. Dazzle Ships
3. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
4. Organisation
5. Punishment of Luxury

They span a long time (I’m old!) and offer a wide span in their repertoire. Immediately recognisable hooks of their singles, baroque and Krautrock album pieces, the perversity of abandoning success by releasing Dazzle Ships when they did, and their current and latest albums standing the test of time. All this underpinned by a love and admiration of Kraftwerk.
