Just been reading the R12 discussion thread and its great to see some BF fans doing really well this year and maybe an outside chance to claim the prize

So this thread is to follow these guys in the back half of the year some or most are regular posters now and for good reason. Would be good to get into the mindset of some of your trades obviousily after they have been done so your not giving anything away and the reasoning to the trades ect

If you guys dont feel comfortable answering anything then thats fine

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway the main reason of this thread is to see hat you think you did right with your starting teams?

How is it going to influence the way you pick your side next year? ect

What are some of the key reasons as to you being so well ranked now due to starting squad?

Any Golden rules that are strictly followed?

Others feel free to ask these guys any more questions

I also have a thread like this in Real Dream Team as I'm ranked 3rd overall there.

Okay i will have a read

but vastly different games now, would be good if you could give some advice on starting teams and what i asked before.

BTW, good luck with both comps

I'm not sure how much use I am to be honest. Whilst I am in a good position this year I put a lot of it down to luck as I haven't been playing fantasy for too long and a few trades etc have gone my way. In saying that I will try to answer your questions as best I can. But I am in no way an 'expert'
what you think you did right with your starting teams?

There was nothing special about my starting team. I didn't pick any of the breakout guys like Hunter, Ross, Merrett etc. The only one I really got was Hall, but plenty started with him. In fact my team wasn't that great to begin with. I started with Sidebottom who was suspended in round 1, who I then traded to Sam Gray. I also started with Wingard, Houli and Barlow. I didn't even start with Kerridge. So I made plenty of mistakes. The best thing I did was go with guns and rookies strategy. No Libba, no Crouch brothers, no Sheridan, no Lonergan etc. so I guess that helped me the most. There is a photo of my starting team in the 'Post your current team' thread, I'll try and copy paste it here.

How is it going to influence the way you pick your side next year? ect

I will definitely go with guns and rookies next year, and try not to be sucked into the hype of guys like Barlow.

What are some of the key reasons as to you being so well ranked now due to starting squad?

I jumped on both Hunter and Merrett early, pissed off Barlow and Wingard pretty much instantly, I traded back in Sidebottom after his suspension to make him captain on Anzac Day (144). It's mainly been not having to focus on getting rid of failed mid pricers that has helped.

Any Golden rules that are strictly followed?

Not really. I traded in Rockliff and made his captain when he got injured on 33. That hurt. So I guess waiting a week before jumping on people? Apart from that I don't really have any rules per se, I just make my trades based on each situation. Anyway I like I said I'm no expert so take all this lightly, It's only luck that has gotten me to where I am.

a couple of qns ---

what style was your initial squad makeup? gunsnrooks midpriced mixed/value

have you held onto or traded premo's that have missed due to injury/illness?

have you had an upgrade strategy or take the best fit available for the round?

well done so far, keep it going!

I think with all the bomber rookies who have ended p being alot better than i thought they would especially with the scoring for them and the team.

M.Brown, Dea, Tippa, Langford, Parish to a degree, Hartley were all excellent and made plenty of money.

Those lot wont be there next year. So rookies will likely be lessoned in quality and quantity.

See i picked Duncan, Hunter, Rich, Johanissen, A.Hall, Kerridge, Wells, Gawn all from the start this year

I think luck has played a huge role this year though, way more than any other year

possibly... i know myself that a couple my luxury trades have bitten me... Tippa, Dea I traded them on their form drop off only for them to rip it up and rolled them for the likes of Biggs & Rich who have done little if anything after looking the goods before getting them in... bad trades so far...

Yep same thats luck

I got 2 luxury trades when others didnt and it meant trading Gawn to blicavs which has costed me hundreds of points.

I also traded Dea when he had a poor score and it seemed he had reached his peak. Then he went onto scoring 80s 123, 105 ect and been better than premiums since. Whereas i know alot of people who had forced trades both weeks so didnt get the chance to do those trades.

Yeh the problem with Rich is the tags now - they are back. Hes the first one to get it at Brisbane. Its a concern. If there were no tags he would avg 90+ no worries probably more.

Just looked i traded Dea for 300k. Hes now 367 before his 105 this week.

I tried to answer some of these questions in the post above yours. I went with guns and rookies, only mid pricers were Hall and Wells.

It will be interesting to see where people are after the byes. Every year I have played, rankings change a lot through this period. (In previous years I have normally got well into the top 500 from low down the rankings. 2 years ago I went from ~3000 to 90 over just the bye weeks, similar last year but I fell away at the end of the year).

I reckon you will find there are players in the top 100 that are not prepared and will wear donughts, so if you are in a good possie now and are set for the byes you could easily be in a position to fight for the cash.

choosing Stef over Goldy initially was a big **** kick out of bounds for me

Yep huge leg up just on that 50/50 call. I almost went Goldy just to be different to everyone picking Stef Martin.

Goldys averaged 25 more. Over 12 games now thats 300 points.

300 points in the rankings differential is huge.

See i think i had a better starting side then Fyfetheknife but am a fair way behind.

Ideally this will be me. This is the first team I have ever really 'prepared' for the byes, and with some good trading and a bit of luck I could have 20 playing each week. What do you think is a good bye score? 18/1900? Lower?

Well at the time it wasn't a difficult decision as Martin has performed for two straight years and goldy had just last year but kicking myself for it as I hate sideways trading except for long term injuries

I'm thinking lower as you will have bench players on the field instead of premos considering start of year around 2000 points for 22 players was a good score

My #1 rule for myself that I've stuck by over the years is to not sideways premos without reason (reason = injury/suspension/dropped), so I ride it out with the guys I started with. I always think the best mindset to go for is to upgrade rookies and then deal with underperforming premos later - they are premiums for a reason. Also when picking starters and trading in upgrades I like to look at previous years averages and games, plus durability. A guy like Kade Simpson (touch wood) never misses games really and is a pretty safe bet to play almost every game compared to someone like Riewoldt in the forward line, for example.

One of my good trades so far this year that worked out - Martin to Goldy after Martin got knocked out. A bit of luck involved in that one but I felt like the concussion was going to negatively affect him due to how big the hit was, and thankfully I was right. Another good trade was getting rid of Hall when his shoulder injury cropped up. I didn't like the sound of it and I think it played a part with him being dropped as the couple games after that he wasn't at his best.

Depends on the bye round. Generally as you have 18 players scoring, if you can average ~1700 across the 3 rounds you will dominate. I find that people that cop 0's on top of rooks etc... might get a 1800 round, but will get a 1200-1500 score for the bye rounds that they are not prepared for.

Basically, I reckon you cant think of each bye round as an individual week because teams are prepared so differently have a certain amount of premo's per bye round. You have to look at it as your score over the 3 rounds.

I have a feeling round 14 will kill several players this year

So your happy to move on these premiums even though they may just miss the 1 week ie: Hall

You sort of make a hypocrite of yourself there. On one hand you say not to trade premiums but then on the other hand you see how successful it was to move on S.Martin to Goldstein so early even though he didnt miss a game?

This no doubt is the key to fantasy and doing well ect

With 2 trades a week, you cant always do a downgrade/upgrade and there may not be good downgrade targets. Sitting on a trade or a perfect sideways trade is now part of the strategy.

My point was you don't trade premiums just because they had a bad game. See all the people that traded out Zaharakis and how well he did this week? Same with Kerridge (not exactly a premium but priced highly) after his 60 odd game and then scored 139 points the next week. If you have a reason such as injury, dropped from the side or someone like Martin who was knocked out then I feel like that's a reason to trade them - even more so if they were underperforming.

Yeh not until the cash cows have fatooned which doesnt start happening till probably round 5/6 for some

I guess its a solid point in the first 5 rounds. Back the premiums in that you started with unless injury/suspension (ie: missing a game). I suppose if i had the luxury at the time it was something i was considering.

The rucks have screwed me again this year - hopefully i learn next year.

I traded Gawn after round 2 he was averaging 69.5 to Blicavs who was averaging 95 at the time. Since that time Gawn has gone 924 from 9 games, Blicavs gone 770 from the same 9 rounds.

I then bought in Lycett 2 weeks ago who after avg 104 for the past 7 rounds prior to me bringing him has scored 76 and 40 since.

interesting reading so far. My problem, and I guess its the same with a lot of others is that they read farrrrrrrrr too much into all of the 'must have' trades each week. For eg. In about round 5 I was convinced into trading in Sam Mitchell when I had my eyes set on Jack Steven. While Mitchell had started the year great, I didn't want someone who could be tagged out of game. Next thing, Mitchell loses $150k and due to forced trades, I couldn't get him out.

I guess what I've (slowly) learnt, is stick with your gut and as mentioned above, don't trade out 'premium' players unless injured etc.

.........unless you've held Stefan Martin. I hate that man bun.
