Declan Mountford also called up to training along with Black and Giro.

Just watch how this unfolds.

1. Player misses 7 days with covid protocol.
2. Player comes back, trains once, gets picked.
3. Player does a hamstring playing as he was unable to train for 7 days.
4. Player out for 8 weeks with hamstring tear.

Just happened to Coleman at the Lions and the physio's have already warned that it won't be the only case of soft tissue injuries playing so soon after 7 days isolation.
More dangerous... if the player actually had covid, even mild, high performance athletes have a higher chance of heart problems after they recover and resume high intensity exercise.

Can we delist top up players and pick new ones up?

They tried hard and did there job on the weekend given the circumstances but agree that none of them on the weekend looked that appealing to be getting picked up come mid season draft or in the future. They did well to hold there own in this one off game but none are AFL quality. Need to look elsewhere.

You would be hard pressed to convince me that Giro or Mountford aren’t better depth and players at afl level then O’neill , langdon and winder.. Mountford shut simpkin out of the game in the second half.. black also is better but age counts against him.

Well they are just top up players to ensure we have enough players to field a team, but it's hard to know how WAFL grade players will go in the AFL.
Perhaps they will go better in subsequent games, or others like Fisher, Florenca and Ramsay will do better.
Just wish we went for more variety in the players to fill in for different types of positions like some small forwards or key position players.

Not sure potting Ainsworth all the time is a good thing. He might not be up to AFL standard but he helped the club when in need when he was delisted.. He is no where near the worst player we have had on the list. He was half decent in 2018 but development just went backwards sadly.

So we draft a player from the WAFL and you’re prepared to give them 3-4-5-6 years to find their feet and the blokes yesterday after one hitout you say are no good?

Thought they all performed pretty well in the circumstances.

Mountford and Giro certainly put their hands up for more attention from recruiters. Dewar was very solid down back but at 29 he’s probably unlikely to get back on a list.

after going thru the alignment years it was always obvious that many seasoned wafl players were better then some of the players that the eagles drafted.especially watching partington and mutimer being carved up by jai bolton.also seeing tim kelly playing for south fremantle i was bitterly dissapointed we didn't draft him with our second draft pick.we all know what happened that year.we didn't need two developing key forwards and drafted brander and allen. we overstimated brander and underestimated allen and paid a high price by not drafting kelly in the first place..

I think it really should be a change in drafting strategy for the pieman, any picks inside 1-35 take the best young talent. Outside of that draft proven state league players 22-26 that can fill any list holes or needs we have… what would have been better? Jamieson sitting on our list for now 3 years injured and not showing much or would we have been served better with a sam fisher, jye bolton our greg clark 2 years ago?

Just saw the AFL injury list had Ainsworth listed as "Knee - TBA". I was hoping it was just a made up injury to allow us to bring Edwards on. It may still be. However, if not, I feel for him.

Much maligned on this forum, and possibly not AFL standard at the end of the day, but he put up his hand to play (for the club that didn't want him). If he does end up injured I hope the club does the right thing and helps him with his recovery.

Brayden, I hope you never read this forum, but if you do, thanks for answering the call and I hope you're right to go for WAFL round one 👍

All good to say that in hindsight but teams always have project talls on the list.

Unless they are top end talent like a luke jackson, nic nat you can wait and get good more experienced talls for nothing. Look at Hayes for st kilda even cal sinclair when we got him

I think taking 1-2 project players per draft is good strategy. Whether they are 18yo's or mature agers doesn't really matter.

Mature agers can then (generally) be selected through the SSP or mid-season draft.

I do agree with you that we have had too few mature-age 2nd tier 'stars' on our list in recent times - but not sure that it should be at the expense of a player like Jamieson (we took Treacy, Mitch O'Neill, Ah Chee and Brayshaw as rookies after Jamieson, so had plenty of opportunity to take a mature age league player)
