Hey guys, not sure if it's being discussed in another thread but I'm interested to see who other supporters think we should be selecting as 'top-up players'

I don't know enough about the state leagues etc to comment but I'm sure there's a few on here that could :)

Let's try and turn a negative into a positive.

I'd like to see guys that genuinely want a tilt at an AFL list spot being afforded the opportunity to be top up players such that they will get tested in match play against AFL listed players. It could further their cause at the end of the season come draft time.

I don't want us to select the first players that put their hand up. See if they're genuine about their intentions, compare this to their talent and their performance over the last say 2 years in the state leagues (I want seasoned players, not 18 year olds), then make a decision.

As for who falls into this bracket, I can't comment as I haven't paid enough attention to SANFL for the last couple of years and don't know enough about the other state leagues period.

COBURG defender Michael Hartley is poised to take up the NAB Challenge for Essendon.
It’s believed the Burgers have given the Bombers permission to use the former Collingwood rookie as a top-up player in pre-season matches.
Hartley, 21 and 198cm, represented the NSW Under 18 team in 2011 and was with the Magpies in 2012-13.
But he was beset by shoulder problems and played only five VFL games in his two seasons.
Moving to Coburg last year, he found fitness and confidence, playing 15 matches and getting eight mentions in the best.
Coach Peter German noted he was rarely beaten in the air and read the play well.
Hartley attended the State Combine and was considered a rookie prospect.

Milne might finally get to Essendon...

STEPHEN Milne, Brock McLean and Josh Bootsma could revive their careers as Essendon top-up players.

As unlikely as it sounds, the trio are all eligible to play for Essendon on a short-term contract under rules drawn up by the AFL.

Former Collingwood rookie Michael Hartley, now playing for Coburg in the VFL, is set to pull on a Bombers jumper for the pre-season comp.

The Bombers say they need up to 20 extra players to field a team in the NAB Challenge — and possibly beyond if players are suspended by the AFL anti-doping tribunal.

Five former AFL listed players have agreed to join the club for the upcoming NAB Challenge competition.

Mitch Brown, Jared Petrenko, Clint Jones, James Magner and Mitch Clisby have all verbally committed to join the Bombers 2015 NAB Challenge squad.

List manager Adrian Dodoro welcomed the newest recruits to the club’s list.

“These five players have agreed verbally after discussions with the player, their club’s and their player agents,” Dodoro said.

“They will come into the club on Thursday to do medical testing, they will go through an induction process and we will treat them like a regular AFL player.

“They still have to tick some boxes before they sign the contract but it appears we are heading down that path with these boys.”

Brown is a key position player who played 15 matches with Geelong from 2011 to 2014.

The 24-year-old is a versatile tall effective at either end of the ground and with a strong overhead marking ability.

Petrenko is a versatile small forward who also has the ability to play further up the ground and is hard at the contest.

The 25-year-old booted 50 goals during his 76 games for Adelaide between 2009 and 2014.

Jones is set to add important experience to the line up as a defensive midfielder with 149 games of AFL experience with St Kilda.

The 31-year-old played the majority of his career as a tagger on some of the best midfielders in the competition.

Magner who is currently on Port Melbourne’s VFL list is set to add some hard inside midfield experience to the squad.

The 27-year-old former Melbourne player is a bullish midfielder around the stoppages who has the ability to win his own footy.

Clisby is currently on North Adelaide’s list in the SANFL after playing eight games with Melbourne at AFL level.

The 25-year-old is an outside midfielder with good running ability who uses the ball well by foot.
