Absolutely amazing story.
An often untold part of the history of war.

Was going to skip over this novel, glad I did not. Could have just had thee story without all the other crap though imo.

great story

i'm more amazed that the german fella has lived to tell that tale too. i was under the impression that nazi soldiers were executed if they didn't follow orders. happy to be corrected there though.

Did you ever read Murray Walkers autobiography?? he was a tank commander during the war. At the end he was ordered to let armed German soldiers (who were moving civilians as far away from the approaching red army)pass and just get to the Russians as quick as he can.

In Tobruk during the famous Seige, after a skirmish/battle, both the Australians and the Germans would put there guns down and help eachother with the wounded..

Alot of properganda out there...

Good story GG, i don't like the american style of writing, but the essence of the story shone threw..

Potentially. But that would have been pretty unlikely that early in the war. More likely later perhaps as things got desperate. It also supposes that someone other than the pilot himself knew what he had done, and I doubt he was bragging about it afterwards. As the story said, the Germans had those planes for training so as he flew with it it would have appeared to be one of those once they were away from the initial attack area.

Also, don't confuse German Army or Air Force with "nazis". They weren't necessarily, and there's plenty of tales of conflict between the two.

Good story, GG. Thanks for posting.

FFS that was difficult to read, how many times did the writer want to go off and start talking about something else in the middle of the story??

Still, brilliant story. The warrior code is very interesting.

What about the more common occurrence of being absolutely dehumanised by losing your mates, accepting your quickly impending death, the heinous shit you see, the physical degradation, and the complete emotional wreckage that happens in war. So then you end up stabbing your captives in the eye and burning helpless women and children.

Yeah.
