Season 2006
A promising start as we made the Wizard Cup (or NAB Cup 2006?) Grand Final but went down to Essendon by 35 points. Luke Hodge and Scott Welsh the form players through the preseason. Unfortunately Josh Thurgood was injured and will miss the first few weeks of the season as will Trent Croad as his Round 21 suspension from last year carries through.

In Round 1 we play Brisbane. The team...
FF: Crawford Welsh Franklin
HF: Embley Barker Williams
C: Bateman Hodge Kerr
HB: Smith Rivers Lonie
FB: Brown Jacobs Boyle
Fol: Taylor Lewis Mitchell
Int: Vandenberg Osborne Dawson Roughead

In: Welsh, Kerr, Embley, Rivers
Out:

Haw: 18.12.120
Bris: 12.7.79
Goals: Welsh 7, Barker 2.
Best: Welsh, Mitchell, Taylor.

Great start to the season. Good start for all the recruits and a special mention to Simon Taylor who has stepped up straight into the ruck position and proved a more than capable replacement for Spida. Jordan Lewis looks to have taken a step up and along with Hodgey and Mitchell could be forming a great combination. Unfortunately Mark Williams broke his arm and will miss 4 weeks in the only downside of the match.

League News
Darren Gaspar will miss a week after rolling his ankle in Richmond’s loss to West Coast.
Anthony Rocca will be in doubt for next week after being concussed in his side’s loss to Essendon.
Matt Maguire broke his collar bone in his side’s narrow loss to Carlton and he will miss 6 weeks.
Adelaide lost by 2 points to Geelong and will face the next 3 weeks without Mark Riccuto who broke his foot.

In Round 2 we play Richmond. The team...
FF: Crawford Welsh Franklin
HF: Embley Barker Miller
C: Bateman Hodge Kerr
HB: Smith Rivers Lonie
FB: Brown Jacobs Boyle
Fol: Taylor Lewis Mitchell
Int: Vandenberg Sewell Dawson Roughead

In: Miller Sewell
Out: Williams (Injured) Osborne

Haw: 6.19.55
Rich: 11.12.78
Goals: Crawford 2.
Best: Kerr, Mitchell, Rivers.

Bad kicking is bad football and our kicking was horrible. Scott Welsh appears to have taken over from Dutchy in the bag kicking position he kicked 1.5. He was not recruited to kick behinds! Of 19 behinds only 1 was rushed. It’s a disgrace. A poor quality game and it was dominated by Nathan Brown. Kerr was easily our best.

League News
Kelvin Moore was suspended for 3 weeks for striking.
Leigh Brown strained his calf and will miss 2 after his side’s loss to Port.
Mark McGough 1 game striking suspension and Max Hudghton’s strained hamstring which will put him in doubt for next week were the only problems in St Kilda’s convincing win over Adelaide.
Brendan Fevola kicked 5 to help the blues beat Essendon.

In Round 3 we play Port Adelaide. The team...
FF: Crawford Welsh Franklin
HF: Embley Barker Miller
C: Bateman Hodge Kerr
HB: Smith Rivers Lonie
FB: Brown Jacobs Boyle
Fol: Taylor Lewis Mitchell
Int: Vandenberg Sewell Hudson Roughead

In: Hudson
Out: Dawson

Haw: 23.10.148
Port: 14.12.96
Goals: Welsh 6, Barker, Hodge, Smith 2.
Best: Mitchell, Lewis, Smith.

A much better performance from the boys this week. Good kicking is good football (does it work that way?) We were down at quarter time but from then on we powered away. Jordan Lewis racked up 32 disposals in a powerful display from the youngster. Joel Smith was damaging across half back and Mitchell and Hodge were also very good. Welsh made up for his bad kicking last week with an improved performance today. The key factor in this game was our clearance domination much thanks to the 3 previously mentioned midfielders.

League News
That dirty Greg Stafford bloke got 3 weeks for striking in Richmond’s win over Carlton.
Ryswyk of Brisbane will miss 2 weeks with a foot injury.
Fremantle and Adelaide played out a tough draw, which included 3 suspensions. Ryan Murphy got 3 weeks for striking and he also broke his foot but that wont take any longer than the 3 weeks to heal. Robbie Hadrill got 2 weeks for charging. Doughty of Adelaide got 4 weeks for striking.
Aaron Henneman’s 3 week broken foot and Jason Lay********’s 11 week back injury were more bad news for Essendon as they got thumped by St Kilda.
Carlton’s Jordan Bannister strained his knee in the win over the dogs, he will miss 3 weeks.

In Round 4 we play St Kilda. The team...
FF: Crawford Welsh Roughead
HF: Embley Barker Franklin
C: Bateman Hodge Kerr
HB: Smith Rivers Lonie
FB: Brown Croad Jacobs
Fol: Taylor Lewis Mitchell
Int: Vandenberg Sewell Hudson Miller

In: Croad
Out: Boyle

Haw: 15.12.102
St K: 20.11.131
Goals: Embley 3, Roughead, Welsh, Mitchell, Barker 2.
Best: Hodge, Kerr, Embley.

We faded big time in the 2nd half. Shouldn’t be happening if we’re serious about playing finals footy this year. Apart from that a good effort against a quality side. They just wanted it more in that 2nd half and a few of our big names let down. I’m looking your way Crawf.

League News
Troy Selwood strained his calf and will miss 2 weeks after Brisbane’s win.
David Neitz will miss 4 with a broken hand as Melbourne went down to Carlton.
The bulldogs got over the line against the cats but Chris Grant has a 2 week suspension for striking and bad news for the cats with Brad Ottens doing his knee and will miss the rest of the season, James Kelly breaking a finger and will miss 2 weeks and David Wojcinski will miss 3 weeks with a knee injury.
Dustin Fletcher will miss 2 with a strained knee.
Mark Chaffey will miss 6 weeks after breaking his leg in the Collingwood, Richmond draw.
