Leave the guy alone , he's gone FFS , if he didn't like bucks so much he wouldn't use his gameplan . I love Buckley but maybe he won't use the press because of his ego, hey flip it the other way around.

If Mick keeps sniping whilst hiding behind his press hat then he deserves all the sh@t he gets. He needs to let it go and get on with life.

It's not harsh at all.

It's probably fact.

Why would you try something out of the blue so late and deep into the finals when the very plan you have been executing for almosgt 2 years now is a proven performer? Do not buy into the whole "Geelong picked our press apart" theory. They didn't.

What they did do is pick apart our ball movement going forward- they defended the boundary side of the corridor, placed all their numbers in there and all of a sudden the supposed "get out kick down the line" was a total scrap with bodies everywhere. When Geelong won the footy they would then bring it back through the corridor and into the fat side of the ground where all the open space was.

So all of a sudden, instead of marking space and territory which would have squeezed and cut down Geelong's avenues and space, we opted for man on man which left all their players the freedom to move into open spaces at will with our guys trailing in behind.

Because we had so many players hurting, it was unwise to play man on man because these players did not get the assistance and help of the team zone/press that the press would have provided- point in case Ben Reid on Hawkins. All of their players got one-on-one contests which was to the detriment of the team whereas our guys were always outnumbered- point in case Travis Cloke after he started like a house on fire.

Yep, nailed it 100%. It was the same against the Hawks, they focused numbers on the wing to cut off our movement forward.

I thought we lost it at selection, not picking Goldsack as the sub, we had many underdone and injured players in the backline, Reid was shot in the 2nd half and Mick was too stubborn to move him off Hawkins. I know Taz was moved to Johnson to stop him but if Goldsack had been sub he could've gone to Johnson, Taz to Hawkins, we return to the game plan of spare man in defense with Reid playing that role.

Blame Mick if you want but injuries were the main reason, we limped into the finals, Geelong were firing. 2010 we had a great run with injuries, the past 8mths we haven't.

He hasn't actually said anything about Collingwood

As i said though, just let it go, if you really dislike what he has to say don't listen too it, you don't need too anymore.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have read (even on this forum) for a very long time.

What? You mean you can't see all the compelling evidence that conclusively proves Mick Malthouse lost a Grand Final on purpose purely out of bitterness? I guess we're very lucky on this forum to have a genius like Shpeshal Ed to enlighten us all.

More like Jon Ralph and his fellow hatchet boys need to let go. We know you never will, despite happily celebrating the flag Malthouse coached

For starters, I never once said Malthouse lost a flag on purpose. Good to see everyone's reading and comprehension skills are around the mark though. People throughly enjoy twisting words to suit their own bullshit.

Also, yes, I celebrated the flag, why wouldn't I? Never changed my opinion on Malthouse though, so not sure where that leaves you.

built a list, coached a flag - universally loved by his players, but still not good enough for Ed?

I bet you Pendles, Daisy & Swanny don't think he's a selfish old prick that cost them a flag, they probably see him as the bloke that made them the players they are and coached them to a flag

I have to admit that Malthouse has been annoying me a little in the last year. The latest thing to annoy me was his announcement to the players after the grandfinal that he was leaving. I'm sure everyone has seen the video of the players behind closed-doors immediately after the game. Mick said a couple of good words and then basically signed off. Even watching it 6 months later, I was looking for Malthouse to concentrate more on the players, rather than turn the spotlight upon himself.

Regretfully, I am starting to think that he is acting like an old man who is worried that he is going to be forgotten. In the last year, I have thinking more and more that Mick has a huge inferiority complex and needs to prove to the world that he's the greatest coach on earth. Maybe he cant live without Ed slapping him on the back.

As far as I'm concerned, my loyalties are now with Bucks.

I disagree.

I think Malthouse handled his leaving in textbook manner.

Once the Grand Final had been played, there was nothing he could do but to offer thanks for anything that needed to be thanked, and wish everyone well. And that's what he did.

And the timing was perfect - announcing it any earlier would have been a distraction to the players. Announcing it any later would risk the players finding out through the media. Particularly given that he went on to announce it at the post match press conference.

Was thinking that same thing

And if he doesn't already, then perhaps after the WCE towel his side over in the west today

What a terrible situation that club's in, will be a real theft if he has the enormous personal capabilities required to pull that around.

Many would have sought out the alleged leaker to that Mifsud bloke and sacked him - what a prick of a thing to do to your new coach

I still think he should but it's a double edged sword for sure

It's unfortunate my pessimism won't allow me to see the sunny side to Malthouse you seem to see.

I only see the mistakes and taking a decade to win a flag with unlimited resources and control over a football club.

Sorry.

Swooop
I think Neeld now knows what a nest of vipers he has under him at Melbourne and it looks like he has upset the applecart there have been a few stories going around already about how tough Neeld is to work with.

The blokes who stitched Neeld up should all get the arse including the bloke at the AFL but you can bet your life it wont happen,if they just give him a chance it could work out alright for him and them but they wont.

Neeld I think was their chance to turn things around, over the last month thing have really turned to s--- for them and when this happens you have to stick together not knifed the coach in the back.

unlimited resources you say, for a decade?

I swear he inherited a side off the back of a wooden spoon, that was also stone broke and took them to 2 GF's inside 3 years & then rebuilt again and delivered a Premiership.

I think what Ed is trying to say is that from 2002 onwards (2002-2011 is a decade) Collingwood has spent the most on coaches, recruiting, sports science, facilities, undertaken 5 trips to Arizona and one to Joburg and travelled interstate for matches 4 times per year while being guaranteed 14 games a season at the ground we play best.

Basically if you went to every other club in that time frame and asked them what they wanted they'd say without hesitation what MM get's at Collingwood.

To only produce 1 premiership is what he will ultimately be judged on and I'm with Ed when he says that MM, along with the playing group, have underachieved with what they've had at their disposal.

Total agreement, grateful to Mick for the premiership and in awe of his capabilities to bring young players on but far from the demigod some here believe. His behaviour in the last month before the finals and since leaving has left a bitter taste and done nothing to enhance his reputation.

I don't believe that to be correct.

Well then who has spent more?

Hine has had the biggest recruiting budget in the league for at least the last half dozen years with 4 full time recruiters answering to him plus a litany of casual contacts, David Buttifant has 9 people under him in the sports science department and ruled the roost for basically the entirety of MM's time at Collingwood, we moved into the then Lexus centre in 2004 (so I can give you 18 months worth on facilities), Fly Emirates jumped on board in 99 and by the start of 03 the TAC had as well. No other club since then has generated as much money in terms of sponsorship except possibly Fremantle with their links to Woodside petroleum who only came on board in 09, I believe. We've been number one in terms of membership revenue since 03 and finally MM had the chance to coach arguably three of the 10 best Collingwood players of the past 50 years during his tenure (Pendles, Bucks and Swanny).

The only club who could possibly lay claim to providing more to their coaches off field is guess who.... Geelong and that is almost entirely based on the fact that they have a 100% clean stadium! No coach was looked after as much as he was by Ed, whenever the team had a flat spot and he was under pressure Ed got on the front foot and batted it away. Late 05 was the most obvious case when he signed him back up without hesitation, even though he had a year to run on his contract....

FWIW Buckley should be looked upon in the same light if he can't get us at least 1-2 more flags with this current group. With the amount of resources he will have at his disposal a flag every half dozen years should be the minimum. That may seem like a very high aim, but he will get anything and everything he asks for! You just have to take a look at the redevelopment at the Westpac centre, we're paying with it out of our own pocket, there's no other club in the league that could do that.....

Not to put too fine a point on it Thommo belief isn't the point proof one way or the other is. That is unless you are arguing on blind loyalty :)

I have no loyalty either way, other than to the club. I just think there are some short memories. We may have played in a few GF's in 02/03, but we were far from financial powerhouses by then.

But for the last couple of years, I'd imagine West Coast, Geelong, Adelaide & Sydney were all better resourced for various reasons. I'd imagine West Coast would still be highly competitive in this area now, they would want for nothing.

There comes a point for some of these wealthy clubs, us included, where you're spending so much its neither here nor there. It's just the appetite for spending that determines who spends more, not the ability to spend it.

West Coast, Geelong, Adelaide would spend what they want to spend, I doubt they're getting knocked back for anything - just as I doubt we have spent entirely what we want to for about the last 5 years tops.
